Nonequilibrium Steady States and MacLennan-Zubarev Ensembles in a Quantum Junction System

Abstract

Based on a recent progress in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of infinitely extended quantum systems, a nonequlibrium steady state (NESS) is constructed for a single-level quantum dot interacting with two free reservoirs under less general but more practically useful conditions than the previous works. As an example, a model of an Ahoronov-Bohm ring with a quantum dot is studied in detail. Then, NESS is shown to be regarded as a MacLennan-Zubarev ensemble. A formal relation between response and correlation at NESS is derived as well.

On the quasi-static evolution of nonequilibrium steady states

Walid K. Abou Salem

The quasi-static evolution of steady states far from equilibrium is investigated from the point of view of quantum statistical mechanics. As a concrete example of a thermodynamic system, a two-level quantum dot coupled to several reservoirs of free fermions at different temperatures is considered. A novel adiabatic theorem for unbounded and nonnormal generators of evolution is proven and applied to study the quasi-static evolution of the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of the coupled system. © Birkhäuser Verlag Basel/Switzerland 2007.

Nonequilibrium density matrix for quantum transport: Hershfield approach as a McLennan-Zubarev form of the statistical operator

H. Ness

In this paper, we formally demonstrate that the nonequilibrium density matrix developed by Hershfield for the steady state has the form of a McLennan-Zubarev nonequilibrium ensemble. The correction term in this pseudoequilibrium Gibbs-like ensemble is directly related to the entropy production in the quantum open system. The fact that both methods state that a nonequilibrium steady state can be mapped onto a pseudoequilibrium, permits us to develop nonequilibrium quantities from formal expressions equivalent to the equilibrium case. We provide an example: the derivation of a nonequilibrium distribution function for the electron population in a scattering region in the context of quantum transport.

On the Fluctuations of Macroscopic Observables in Quantum Nonequilibrium Steady States

Walid K. Abou Salem

The fluctuations of macroscopic observables in quantum systems which are in a nonequilibrium steady state are studied rigorously in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of a quantum spin system that is composed of two infinite reservoirs at different temperatures coupled in a bounded region is considered. Under suitable assumptions on the interaction and the asymptotics of the fluctuations, a nonequilibrium central limit theorem for the fluctuations of the NESS expectation value of the empirical average of observables is proven by showing the analyticity of the corresponding moment generating function in a neighbourhood of the origin using the cluster expansion method. Furthermore, the large deviation principle is proven for a class of observables by establishing the existence and differentiability of the corresponding moment generating function.

Nonequilibrium boundary-driven quantum systems: Models, methods, and properties

Gabriel Teixeira Landi, Dario Poletti, Gernot Schaller

Systems whose boundaries are in contact with heat baths at different temperatures allow for the realization of nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) characterized by distribution functions that are still time independent, yet different from the equilibrium distributions. Such states have interesting properties even in classical statistical mechanics, but recently their quantum analogs have received attention, for both fundamental and applied reasons. This review provides an account of recent progress in this field. It introduces various models to describe the rich NESS phenomenology and covers analytic and numerical methods for analyzing them.

Nonequilibrium steady state in Lindblad dynamics for infinite quantum spin systems

Kenji Shimomura, Hara, Nagisa, Seiichiro Kusuoka

We consider Lindblad dynamics of quantum spin systems on infinite lattices and define a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) and a time-averaged nonequilibrium steady state (TANESS) on the basis of $C^*$-algebraic formalism. Generically, the NESS on an infinite system does not equal the thermodynamic limit of NESSs on finite systems. We give a sufficient condition that they coincide with each other, in terms of both a condition number, which quantifies the normality of a Liouvillian, and some spectral gaps on finite subsystems. To appreciate the importance of the condition number, we provide an example in which the spectral gaps have nonzero lower bounds uniformly for any finite subsystems but a thermodynamic limit and a long-time limit (or a long-time average) do not commute with each other.
