Abstract

A two-leg ladder with $n$-component fermionic fields in the chains has been considered using an analytic renormalization group method. The fixed points and possible phases have been determined for generic filling as well as for a half-filled system and for the case when one of the subbands is half filled. A weak-coupling Luttinger-liquid phase and several strong-coupling gapped phases have been found. In the Luttinger liquid phase, for the most general spin dependence of the couplings, all $2n$ modes have different velocities if the interband scattering processes are scaled out, while $n$ doubly degenerate modes appear if the interband scattering processes remain finite. The role of backward scattering, charge transfer, and umklapp processes has been analyzed using their bosonic form and the possible phases are characterized by the number of gapless modes. As a special case the $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ symmetric Hubbard ladder has been investigated numerically. It was found that this model does not scale to the Luttinger liquid fixed point. Even for generic filling gaps open up in the spectrum of the spin or charge modes, and the system is always insulator in the presence of umklapp processes.

Dimensional crossover in half-filled and lightly dopedN-leg Hubbard ladders

Urs Ledermann

We study the dimensional crossover from one to two dimensions in half-filled and lightly doped, weakly interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders. In this case, the Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model. Using renormalization-group techniques, we find that the half-filled ladders exhibit (in the spin sector) an odd-even effect only below a crossover energy ${E}_{c}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{\gamma}N)]$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ depend on the interaction strength and on the hopping matrix elements): Below ${E}_{c},$ the dominant interactions take place within band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ [and within the band $(N+1)/2$ for N odd], such that even-leg ladders are an insulating spin liquid, while odd-leg ladders have one gapless spinon mode. In contrast, above the energy scale ${E}_{c},$ all bands are interacting with each other and the system is a two-dimensional- (2D)-like (insulating) antiferromagnet; we obtain an analytical expression for the Hamiltonian which is similar to the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Bosonization techniques show that in the charge sector the Mott insulator is as well below and above ${E}_{c}$ of the same type as in $N/2$ half-filled two-leg ladders. Doping away from half-filling, we find that the effect of an increasing doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is very similar to decreasing the number of legs N: In both cases interactions between unpaired bands are suppressed and thereby the antiferromagnetic correlations reduced. The resulting band pairs form then insulating spin liquids and when doped, there is a spin gap, but phase coherence exists only within the band pairs. At higher doping levels ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}={\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N),$ phase coherence between all band pairs sets in and the system becomes a 2D-like d-wave superconductor $[{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}].$

Successive opening of the Fermi surface in dopedN-leg Hubbard ladders

Urs Ledermann, Karyn Le Hur, Thomas Maurice Rice

We study the effect of doping away from half-filling in weakly (but finitely) interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders using renormalization-group and bosonization techniques. For a small on-site repulsion U, the N-leg Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model, where at half-filling the Fermi velocities are ${v}_{1}{=v}_{N}<{v}_{2}{=v}_{N\ensuremath{-}1}<\ensuremath{\cdot}\ensuremath{\cdot}\ensuremath{\cdot}.$ We then obtain a hierarchy of energy scales, where the band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ are successively frozen out. The low-energy Hamiltonian is then the sum of $N/2$ [or $(N\ensuremath{-}1)/2$ for N odd] two-leg ladder Hamiltonians without gapless excitations (plus a single chain for N odd with one gapless spin mode)---similar to the N-leg Heisenberg spin ladders. The energy scales lead to a hierarchy of gaps. Upon doping away from half-filling, the holes first enter the band(s) with the smallest gap: For odd N, the holes enter first the nonbonding band $(N+1)/2$ and the phase is a Luttinger liquid, while for even N, the holes enter first the band pair $(N/2,N/2+1)$ and the phase is a Luther-Emery liquid, similar to numerical treatments of the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model, i.e., at and close to half-filling, the phases of the Hubbard ladders for small and large U are the same. For increasing doping, hole pairs subsequently enter at critical dopings the other band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ (accompanied by a diverging compressibility): The Fermi surface is successively opened by doping, starting near the wave vector $(\ensuremath{\pi}/2,\ensuremath{\pi}/2).$ Explicit calculations are given for the cases $N=3$ and 4.

Ground-state and spectral properties of an asymmetric Hubbard ladder

Anas Abdelwahab, Eric Jeckelmann, Martin Hohenadler

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely, a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density-matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wave numbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We discuss the relevance of asymmetric two-leg ladder systems as models for atomic wires deposited on a substrate.

Two-loop renormalization group theory for the quasi-one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling

Masahisa Tsuchiizu

We derive two-loop renormalization group equations for the half filled one-dimensional Hubbard chains coupled by the interchain hopping. Our renormalization group scheme for the quasi-one-dimensional electron system is a natural extension of that for the purely one-dimensional systems in the sense that transverse-momentum dependences are introduced in the $g$-ological coupling constants and we regard the transverse momentum as a patch index. We develop symmetry arguments for the particle-hole symmetric half filled Hubbard model and obtain constraints on the $g$-ological coupling constants by which resultant renormalization equations are given in a compact form. By solving the renormalization group equations numerically, we estimate the magnitude of excitation gaps and clarify that the charge gap is suppressed due to the interchain hopping but is always finite even for the relevant interchain hopping. To show the validity of the present analysis, we also apply this to the two-leg ladder system. By utilizing the field-theoretical Bosonization and Fermionization method, we derive low-energy effective theory and analyze the magnitude of all the excitation gaps in detail. It is shown that the low-energy excitations in the two-leg Hubbard ladder have $\mathrm{SO}(3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SO}(3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry when the interchain hopping exceeds the magnitude of the charge gap.

Spinless fermion ladders at half filling

P. Donohue, Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Thierry Giamarchi +1 more

We study a half-filled ladder of spinless fermions. We show that contrary to a single chain, the ladder becomes a Mott insulator for arbitrarily small repulsive interactions. We obtain the full phase diagram and physical quantities such as the charge gap. We show that there is only a single insulating phase for repulsive interactions, regardless of the strength of the interchain hopping and single chain Mott gap. There is thus no confinement-deconfinement transition in this system but a simple crossover. Using bosonization with the renormalization group we show that upon doping the system becomes a Luttinger liquid with a universal parameter $K=1/2$ different from the one of the single chain $(K=1/4).$

Weakly coupled Hubbard chains at half-filling and confinement

Karyn Le Hur

We study two (very) weakly coupled Hubbard chains in the half-filled case, and especially the situation where the intrachain Mott scale m is much larger than the (bare) single-electron interchain hopping ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}.$ First, we find that the divergence of the intrachain umklapp channel at the Mott transition results in the complete vanishing of the single-electron interchain hopping: this is significant of a strong confinement of coherence along the chains. Excitations are usual charge fermionic solitons and spinon-(anti)spinon pairs of the Heisenberg chain. Then, we show rigorously how the tunneling of spinon-(anti)spinon pairs produces an antiferromagnetic interchain exchange of the order of ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}{=t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{2}/m.$ In the ``confined'' phase and in the far infrared, the system behaves as a pure spin ladder. The final result is an insulating ground state with spin-gapped excitations exactly as in the opposite ``delocalized'' limit (i.e., for rather large interchain hoppings) where the two-leg ladder is in the well-known insulating $D\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Mott}$ phase. Unlike materials with an infinite number of coupled chains (Bechgaard salts), the confinement/deconfinement transition at absolute zero is here a simple crossover: no metallic phase is found in undoped two-leg ladders. This statement might be generalized for N-leg ladders with $N=3,4,\dots{}$ (but not too large).
