Abstract

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely, a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density-matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wave numbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We discuss the relevance of asymmetric two-leg ladder systems as models for atomic wires deposited on a substrate.

Dynamical properties of two coupled Hubbard chains at half-filling

H. Endres, R. M. Noack, Werner R. Hanke +2 more

Using grand canonical quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations combined with maximum entropy analytic continuation, as well as analytical methods, we examine the one- and two-particle dynamical properties of the Hubbard model on two coupled chains at half-filling. The one-particle spectral weight function, A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}), undergoes a qualitative change with interchain hopping ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ associated with a transition from a four-band insulator to a two-band insulator. A simple analytical model based on the propagation of exact rung singlet states gives a good description of the features at large ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$. For smaller ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$, A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}) is similar to that of the one-dimensional model, with a coherent band of width the effective antiferromagnetic exchange J which is reasonably well described by renormalized spin-wave theory. The coherent band rides on a broad background of width several times the parallel hopping integral t, an incoherent structure similar to that found in calculations on both the one- and two-dimensional models. We also present QMC results for the two-particle spin and charge excitation spectra, and relate their behavior to the rung singlet picture for large ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ and to the results of spin-wave theory for small ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dimensional crossover in half-filled and lightly dopedN-leg Hubbard ladders

Urs Ledermann

We study the dimensional crossover from one to two dimensions in half-filled and lightly doped, weakly interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders. In this case, the Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model. Using renormalization-group techniques, we find that the half-filled ladders exhibit (in the spin sector) an odd-even effect only below a crossover energy ${E}_{c}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{\gamma}N)]$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ depend on the interaction strength and on the hopping matrix elements): Below ${E}_{c},$ the dominant interactions take place within band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ [and within the band $(N+1)/2$ for N odd], such that even-leg ladders are an insulating spin liquid, while odd-leg ladders have one gapless spinon mode. In contrast, above the energy scale ${E}_{c},$ all bands are interacting with each other and the system is a two-dimensional- (2D)-like (insulating) antiferromagnet; we obtain an analytical expression for the Hamiltonian which is similar to the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Bosonization techniques show that in the charge sector the Mott insulator is as well below and above ${E}_{c}$ of the same type as in $N/2$ half-filled two-leg ladders. Doping away from half-filling, we find that the effect of an increasing doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is very similar to decreasing the number of legs N: In both cases interactions between unpaired bands are suppressed and thereby the antiferromagnetic correlations reduced. The resulting band pairs form then insulating spin liquids and when doped, there is a spin gap, but phase coherence exists only within the band pairs. At higher doping levels ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}={\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N),$ phase coherence between all band pairs sets in and the system becomes a 2D-like d-wave superconductor $[{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}].$

Correlated atomic wires on substrates. II. Application to Hubbard wires

Anas Abdelwahab, Eric Jeckelmann, Martin Hohenadler

In the first part of our theoretical study of correlated atomic wires on substrates, we introduced lattice models for a one-dimensional quantum wire on a three-dimensional substrate and their approximation by quasi-one-dimensional effective ladder models [Abdelwahab et al., preceding paper, Phys. Rev. B 96, 035445 (2017)]. In this second part, we apply this approach to the case of a correlated wire with a Hubbard-type electron-electron repulsion deposited on an insulating substrate. The ground-state and spectral properties are investigated numerically using the density-matrix renormalization group method and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. As a function of the model parameters, we observe various phases with quasi-one-dimensional low-energy excitations localized in the wire, namely, paramagnetic Mott insulators, Luttinger liquids, and spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chains. The validity of the effective ladder models is assessed for selected parameters by studying the dependence of results on the number of legs and comparing to the full three-dimensional model. We find that narrow ladder models accurately reproduce the quasi-one-dimensional excitations of the full three-dimensional model but predict only qualitatively whether excitations are localized around the wire or delocalized in the three-dimensional substrate.

Phase diagram of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder

Matthias Vojta C, A. Hübsch, R. M. Noack

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the quarter-filled Hubbard ladder with nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V$ using the density matrix renormalization-group technique. The ground state is homogeneous at small $V,$ a ``checkerboard'' charge-ordered insulator at large $V$ and not too small on site Coulomb repulsion U, and is phase separated for moderate or large $V$ and small U. The zero-temperature transition between the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phase is found to be second order. In both the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phases the existence of a spin gap mainly depends on the ratio of interchain to intrachain hopping. In the second part of the paper we construct an effective Hamiltonian for the spin degrees of freedom in the strong-coupling, charge-ordered regime that maps the system onto a frustrated spin chain. The opening of a spin gap is thus connected with spontaneous dimerization.

Two-leg ladder systems with dipole–dipole Fermion interactions

Hamid Mosadeq, Reza Asgari

The ground-state phase diagram of a two-leg fermionic dipolar ladder with inter-site interactions is studied using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques. We use a state-of-the-art implementation of the DMRG algorithm and finite size scaling to simulate large system sizes with high accuracy. We also consider two different model systems and explore stable phases in half and quarter filling factors. We find that in the half filling, the charge and spin gaps emerge in a finite value of the dipole-dipole and on-site interactions. In the quarter filling case, s-wave superconducting state, charge density wave, homogenous insulating and phase separation phases occur depend on the interaction values. Moreover, in the dipole-dipole interaction, the D-Mott phase emerges when the hopping terms along the chain and rung are the same, whereas, this phase has been only proposed for the anisotropic Hubbard model. In the half filling case, on the other hand, there is either charge-density wave or charged Mott order phase depends on the orientation of the dipole moments of the particles with respect to the ladder geometry.

Phase diagram of hard-core bosons on clean and disordered two-leg ladders: Mott insulator–Luttinger liquid–Bose glass

François Crépin, Nicolas Laflorencie, Guillaume Roux +1 more

One-dimensional free fermions and hard-core bosons are often considered to be equivalent. Indeed, when restricted to nearest-neighbor hopping on a chain, the particles cannot exchange themselves, and therefore hardly experience their own statistics. Apart from the off-diagonal correlations which depend on the so-called Jordan-Wigner string, real-space observables are similar for free fermions and hard-core bosons on a chain. Interestingly, by coupling only two chains, thus forming a two-leg ladder, particle exchange becomes allowed and leads to a totally different physics between free fermions and hard-core bosons. Using a combination of analytical (strong coupling, field theory, renormalization group) and numerical (quantum Monte Carlo, density-matrix renormalization group) approaches, we study the apparently simple but nontrivial model of hard-core bosons hopping in a two-leg ladder geometry. At half filling, while a band insulator appears for fermions at large interchain hopping ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}>2t$ only, a Mott gap opens up for bosons as soon as ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\ne}0$ through a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Away from half filling, the situation is even more interesting since a gapless Luttinger liquid mode emerges in the symmetric sector with a nontrivial filling-dependent Luttinger parameter $1/2\ensuremath{\leqslant}{K}_{s}\ensuremath{\leqslant}1$. Consequences for experiments in cold atoms and spin ladders in a magnetic field, as well as disorder effects, are discussed. In particular, a quantum phase transition is expected at finite disorder strength between a one-dimensional superfluid and an insulating Bose glass phase.
