Abstract

Using grand canonical quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations combined with maximum entropy analytic continuation, as well as analytical methods, we examine the one- and two-particle dynamical properties of the Hubbard model on two coupled chains at half-filling. The one-particle spectral weight function, A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}), undergoes a qualitative change with interchain hopping ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ associated with a transition from a four-band insulator to a two-band insulator. A simple analytical model based on the propagation of exact rung singlet states gives a good description of the features at large ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$. For smaller ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$, A(k,\ensuremath{\omega}) is similar to that of the one-dimensional model, with a coherent band of width the effective antiferromagnetic exchange J which is reasonably well described by renormalized spin-wave theory. The coherent band rides on a broad background of width several times the parallel hopping integral t, an incoherent structure similar to that found in calculations on both the one- and two-dimensional models. We also present QMC results for the two-particle spin and charge excitation spectra, and relate their behavior to the rung singlet picture for large ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ and to the results of spin-wave theory for small ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dynamical properties of two doped, coupled Hubbard chains

R. M. Noack, M. G. Zacher, Endres, H. +1 more

Using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations combined with Maximum Entropy analytic continuation as well as analytical methods, we examine the one- and two-particle dynamical properties of the Hubbard model on two coupled chains at small doping. The behavior of the single-particle spectral weight $A({\bf k},ω)$ as a function of hopping anisotropy $t_\perp/t$ at intermediate interaction strength is dominated by the transition from one-band behavior at large $t_\perp/t$ to two-band behavior at small $t_\perp/t$, although interaction effects such as band-narrowing, a shift of spectral weight to higher energies in the unoccupied antibonding band and reflected structures due to short-range antiferromagnetic correlations are also present. A single-particle gap is resolved in the intermediate $t_\perp/t$ Luther-Emery phase using Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculations. The dynamical spin and charge susceptibilities show features of the expected bonding-band Luttinger liquid behavior, as well as higher-energy features due to local excitations between the chains at large $t_\perp/t$, and evolve towards the behavior of two uncoupled chains as $t_\perp/t$ is reduced. For the one hole, large $t_\perp/t$ case, we make a detailed comparison between the QMC data and an approximation based on local rung states. At isotropic coupling and somewhat larger doping, we find that the dispersion of the single-particle bands is essentially unrenormalized from that of the noninteracting system, and that the spin and charge response functions have features also seen in random-phase-approximation calculations.

Spinon confinement: Dynamics of weakly coupled Hubbard chains

Marcin Raczkowski, Fakher F. Assaad

Using large-scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations in combination with the stochastic analytical continuation, we study two-particle dynamical correlation functions in the anisotropic square lattice of weakly coupled one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard chains at half filling and in the presence of weak frustration. The evolution of the static spin structure factor upon increasing the interchain coupling is suggestive of the transition from the power-law decay of spin-spin correlations in the 1D limit to long-range antiferromagnetic order in the quasi-1D regime and at $T=0$. In the numerically accessible regime of interchain couplings, the charge sector remains gapped. The low-energy momentum dependence of the spin excitations is well described by the linear spin-wave theory with the largest intensity located around the antiferromagnetic wave vector. This magnon mode corresponds to a bound state of two spinons. At higher energies the spinons deconfine and we observe signatures of the two-spinon continuum which progressively fade away as a function of interchain hopping.

Dynamical Propertiesof the One-Dimensional Hubbard Model–A Numerical Study–

Hiromi Otsuka

We investigate the dynamical properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model using the quantum Monte Carlo method and the numerical analytic continuation method based on the maximum entropy principle. Results for the spin, charge and current excitation spectrum are presented for various values of the coupling and the band filling for the system of 24 sites with the periodic boundary condition. We find that the total spectral density of the spin excitation exhibits a gapless structure irrespective of the coupling or the band filling. The charge excitation spectrum, on the other hand, clearly shows the gap formation at the half filled band and shifts its weight toward the higher energy region with increase of the coupling. This charge excitation gap, however, disappears with the hole doping. We also discuss the momentum dependence of the spectral functions.

Spectral weight function for the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Steven R. White

We present results for the single-particle spectral weight function for the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Results were obtained using analytic expressions for the first two moments of the spectral weight function, along with numerical calculations using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo and the maximum-entropy method of analytic continuation. The expressions for the first two moments are surprisingly simple, involving only the parameters of the model, the chemical potential, and the filling. At half-filling, the squared width (variance) of the spectral weight is exactly ${\mathit{U}}^{2}$/4. Numerical results are shown for 8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}8 lattices at a variety of fillings and momenta. The insulating antiferromagnetic gap in the spectral weights, readily apparent in the results at half-filling, is absent at a filling of 0.95.

Spectral Weight Function and Charge-Excitation Gap of the Half-Filled 2D Hubbard Model

Feng Chen, He-Ping Ying, Tie-Feng Xu +1 more

Using the combination of the quantum Monte–Carlo and the maximum entropy methods, we study the single-particle spectral weight function for the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model including the next-nearest-neighbor hopping. In both the weak- and strong-coupling regimes, it is found that a gap persists as the next-nearest-neighbor hopping is turned on. This indicates that a well-defined charge-excitation gap is a universal nature of the model, irrespective of its band structure.

Ground-state and spectral properties of an asymmetric Hubbard ladder

Anas Abdelwahab, Eric Jeckelmann, Martin Hohenadler

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely, a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density-matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wave numbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We discuss the relevance of asymmetric two-leg ladder systems as models for atomic wires deposited on a substrate.
