Abstract

The ground-state phase diagram of a two-leg fermionic dipolar ladder with inter-site interactions is studied using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques. We use a state-of-the-art implementation of the DMRG algorithm and finite size scaling to simulate large system sizes with high accuracy. We also consider two different model systems and explore stable phases in half and quarter filling factors. We find that in the half filling, the charge and spin gaps emerge in a finite value of the dipole-dipole and on-site interactions. In the quarter filling case, s-wave superconducting state, charge density wave, homogenous insulating and phase separation phases occur depend on the interaction values. Moreover, in the dipole-dipole interaction, the D-Mott phase emerges when the hopping terms along the chain and rung are the same, whereas, this phase has been only proposed for the anisotropic Hubbard model. In the half filling case, on the other hand, there is either charge-density wave or charged Mott order phase depends on the orientation of the dipole moments of the particles with respect to the ladder geometry.

Phase diagram of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder

Matthias Vojta C, A. Hübsch, R. M. Noack

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the quarter-filled Hubbard ladder with nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V$ using the density matrix renormalization-group technique. The ground state is homogeneous at small $V,$ a ``checkerboard'' charge-ordered insulator at large $V$ and not too small on site Coulomb repulsion U, and is phase separated for moderate or large $V$ and small U. The zero-temperature transition between the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phase is found to be second order. In both the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phases the existence of a spin gap mainly depends on the ratio of interchain to intrachain hopping. In the second part of the paper we construct an effective Hamiltonian for the spin degrees of freedom in the strong-coupling, charge-ordered regime that maps the system onto a frustrated spin chain. The opening of a spin gap is thus connected with spontaneous dimerization.

Ground-state and spectral properties of an asymmetric Hubbard ladder

Anas Abdelwahab, Eric Jeckelmann, Martin Hohenadler

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely, a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density-matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wave numbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We discuss the relevance of asymmetric two-leg ladder systems as models for atomic wires deposited on a substrate.

Generalized two-leg Hubbard ladder at half filling: Phase diagram and quantum criticalities

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Akira Furusaki

The ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled two-leg Hubbard ladder with intersite Coulomb repulsions and exchange coupling is studied by using the strong-coupling perturbation theory and the weak-coupling bosonization method. Considered here as possible ground states of the ladder model are four types of density-wave states with different angular momentum $(s$-density-wave state, p-density-wave state, d-density-wave state, and f-density-wave state) and four types of quantum disordered states, i.e., Mott insulating states $(S$-Mott, D-Mott, ${S}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-Mott, and ${D}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-Mott states, where S and D stand for s- and d-wave symmetry). The s-density-wave state, the d-density-wave state, and the D-Mott state are also known as the charge-density-wave state, the staggered-flux state, and the rung-singlet state, respectively. Strong-coupling approach naturally leads to the Ising model in a transverse field as an effective theory for the quantum phase transitions between the staggered-flux state and the D-Mott state and between the charge-density-wave state and the S-Mott state, where the Ising ordered states correspond to doubly degenerate ground states in the staggered-flux or the charge-density-wave state. From the weak-coupling bosonization approach it is shown that there are three cases in the quantum phase transitions between a density-wave state and a Mott state: the Ising ${(Z}_{2})$ criticality, the $\mathrm{SU}{(2)}_{2}$ criticality, and a first-order transition. The quantum phase transitions between Mott states and between density-wave states are found to be the U(1) Gaussian criticality. The ground-state phase diagram is determined by integrating perturbative renormalization-group equations. It is shown that the S-Mott state and the staggered-flux state exist in the region sandwiched by the charge-density-wave phase and the D-Mott phase. The p-density-wave state, the ${S}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-Mott state, and the ${D}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-Mott state also appear in the phase diagram when the next-nearest-neighbor repulsion is included. The correspondence between Mott states in extended Hubbard ladders and spin-liquid states in spin ladders is also discussed.

Ground-state phase diagram of the extended two-leg t−J ladder

Xin Lu, Dai-Wei Qu, Yang Qi +2 more

Inspired by the observation of a robust $d$-wave superconducting phase driven by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping in recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of six- and eight-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model, we systematically study the phase diagram of the two-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ ladder with the NNN couplings (including NNN hopping and spin interaction) in a large region of doping level, by means of the DMRG calculations. Upon doping from half filling, we identify the Luther-Emery liquid (LEL) phase, which can be distinguished as the pairing-dominant and charge density-dominant regime by comparing the Luttinger parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$. With the growing NNN couplings, pairing correlations are enhanced and correspondingly ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ increases, driving the system from the density-dominant to the pairing-dominant regime. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase in the larger doping region, we identify two TLL regimes with different features of charge density correlation. At the quarter filling ($1/2$ doping level), we find that the strong dimer orders of bond energy in the open system actually decay algebraically and thus do not indicate a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. Our results show that in the LEL phase of the two-leg ladder, the NNN couplings seem to play the similar role as that on the wider $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ cylinder, and studies on this more accessible system can be helpful toward understanding the emergence of the remarkable $d$-wave superconducting phase on the wider system.

Dimensional crossover in half-filled and lightly dopedN-leg Hubbard ladders

Urs Ledermann

We study the dimensional crossover from one to two dimensions in half-filled and lightly doped, weakly interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders. In this case, the Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model. Using renormalization-group techniques, we find that the half-filled ladders exhibit (in the spin sector) an odd-even effect only below a crossover energy ${E}_{c}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{\gamma}N)]$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ depend on the interaction strength and on the hopping matrix elements): Below ${E}_{c},$ the dominant interactions take place within band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ [and within the band $(N+1)/2$ for N odd], such that even-leg ladders are an insulating spin liquid, while odd-leg ladders have one gapless spinon mode. In contrast, above the energy scale ${E}_{c},$ all bands are interacting with each other and the system is a two-dimensional- (2D)-like (insulating) antiferromagnet; we obtain an analytical expression for the Hamiltonian which is similar to the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Bosonization techniques show that in the charge sector the Mott insulator is as well below and above ${E}_{c}$ of the same type as in $N/2$ half-filled two-leg ladders. Doping away from half-filling, we find that the effect of an increasing doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is very similar to decreasing the number of legs N: In both cases interactions between unpaired bands are suppressed and thereby the antiferromagnetic correlations reduced. The resulting band pairs form then insulating spin liquids and when doped, there is a spin gap, but phase coherence exists only within the band pairs. At higher doping levels ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}={\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N),$ phase coherence between all band pairs sets in and the system becomes a 2D-like d-wave superconductor $[{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}].$

t−Jz ladder: Density-matrix renormalization group and series expansion calculations of the phase diagram

Alexander Weiße, Robert J. Bursill, Chris J. Hamer +1 more

The phase diagram of the two-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{z}$ ladder is explored, using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Results are obtained for energy gaps, electron density profiles, and correlation functions for the half filled and quarter filled cases. The effective Lagrangian velocity parameter ${v}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ is shown to vanish at half filling. The behavior of the one-hole gap in the Nagaoka limit is investigated, and found to disagree with theoretical predictions. A tentative phase diagram is presented, which is quite similar to the full $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ ladder, but scaled up by a factor of about 2 in coupling. Near half filling a Luther-Emery phase is found, which may be expected to show superconducting correlations, while near quarter filling the system appears to be in a Tomonaga-Luttinger phase.
