Abstract

We analyse the one-dimensional (1D) and the two-dimensional (2D) repulsive Hubbard models (HM) for densities slightly away from half-filling through the behaviour of two central quantities of a system: the uniform charge and spin susceptibilities. We point out that a consistent renormalization group treatment of them can only be achieved within a two-loop approach or beyond. In the 1D HM, we show that this scheme reproduces correctly the metallic behaviour given by the well-known Luttinger liquid fixed-point result. Then, we use the same approach to deal with the more complicated 2D HM. In this case, we are able to show that both uniform susceptibilities become suppressed for moderate interaction parameters as one takes the system towards the Fermi surface. Therefore, this result adds further support to the interpretation that those systems are in fact insulating spin liquids. Later, we perform the same calculations in 2D using the conventional random phase approximation, and establish clearly a comparison between the two schemes.

Insulating spin liquid in the lightly doped two-dimensional Hubbard model

Hermann Freire, Eberth de Almeida Correa, Álvaro Antônio Bandeira Ferraz

We calculate the charge compressibility and uniform spin susceptibility for the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model slightly away from half filling within a two-loop renormalization group scheme. We find numerically that both those quantities flow to zero as we increase the initial interaction strength from weak to intermediate couplings. This result implies gap openings in both charge and spin excitation spectra for the latter interaction regime. When this occurs, the ground state of the lightly doped 2D Hubbard model may be interpreted as an insulating spin liquid as opposed to a Mott insulating state.

Two-loop renormalization group calculation of response functions for a two-dimensional flat Fermi surface

Eberth de Almeida Correa, Hermann Freire, Álvaro Antônio Bandeira Ferraz

We present the formalism for a two-loop renormalization group (RG) calculation of some order-parameter susceptibilities associated with a two-dimensional (2D) flat Fermi-surface model. In this order of perturbation theory, one must take into account the self-energy effects directly in all RG flow equations. In one-loop order, our calculation reproduces the well-known results obtained previously by other RG schemes. That is, for repulsive interactions all susceptibilities diverge in the low-energy limit and the antiferromagnetic (AF) spin-density-wave correlations produce indeed the leading instability in the system. In contrast, in two-loop order, only the AF susceptibility diverges for this model. However, even this divergence takes place at a much slower rate than in the one-loop RG approach. The purpose of this paper is to show in a very simple setting how to assess the importance of two-loop quantum fluctuations in 2D interacting fermionic models. With some modifications, the present formalism can also be extended to discuss more realistic models such as the paradigmatic 2D Hubbard model.

"Luttinger" and insulating spin liquids in two dimensions

Hermann Freire, Eberth de Almeida Correa, Ferraz, A.

In the present work, we implement an explicit two-loop renormalization of a two-dimensional flat Fermi surface (FS) in the framework of a field theoretical renormalization group approach (RG). In our scheme, we derive the RG equations for both the coupling functions and Fermi energy. In this way, we are able to probe the existence of spin-charge separation by showing that the low-energy sector of the system is in fact a non-Fermi liquid. In addition, associating the true interacting FS to the infrared stable (IR) fixed point of the Fermi energy, we demonstrate here that it either acquires a small curvature and behaves as a "Luttinger liquid" or it suffers a truncation in k-space depicting an insulating spin liquid.

Two-loop functional renormalization group approach to the one- and two-dimensional Hubbard model

A. A. Katanin

We consider the application of the two-loop functional renormalization group (fRG) approach to study the low-dimensional Hubbard model. This approach accounts for both the universal and nonuniversal contributions to the RG flow. While the universal contributions were studied previously within the field-theoretical RG for the one-dimensional Hubbard model with linearized electronic dispersion and the two-dimensional Hubbard model with flat Fermi surface, the nonuniversal contributions to the flow of the vertices and susceptibilities appear to be important at large momenta scales. The two-loop fRG approach is also applied to the two-dimensional Hubbard model with a curved Fermi surface and the van Hove singularities near the Fermi level. The vertices and susceptibilities in the end of the flow of the two-loop approach are suppressed in comparison with both the one-loop approach with vertex projection and the modified one-loop approach with corrected vertex projection errors. The results of the two-loop approach are closer to the results of one-loop approach with the projected vertices, the difference of the results of one- and two-loop fRG approaches decreases when going away from the van Hove band filling. The quasiparticle weight remains finite in two dimensions at not too low temperatures above the paramagnetic ground state.

Renormalization-group analysis of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Christoph J. Halboth, Walter Metzner

Salmhofer [Commun. Math. Phys. 194, 249 (1998)] recently developed a new renormalization-group method for interacting Fermi systems, where the complete flow from the bare action of a microscopic model to the effective low-energy action, as a function of a continuously decreasing infrared cutoff, is given by a differential flow equation which is local in the flow parameter. We apply this approach to the repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes. The flow equation for the effective interaction is evaluated numerically on a one-loop level. The effective interactions diverge at a finite-energy scale which is exponentially small for small bare interactions. To analyze the nature of the instabilities signaled by the diverging interactions we extend Salmhofer's renormalization group for the calculation of susceptibilities. We compute the singlet superconducting susceptibilities for various pairing symmetries, and also charge- and spin-density susceptibilities. Depending on the choice of the model parameters (hopping amplitudes, interaction strength, and band filling) we find commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic instabilities or d-wave superconductivity as leading instability. We present the resulting phase diagram in the vicinity of half-filling, and also results for the density dependence of the critical energy scale.

RENORMALISATION GROUP ANALYSIS OF THE TWO-DIMENSIONAL HUBBARD MODEL: SPIN CORRELATIONS AND D-WAVE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY

Walter Metzner

The repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model is analysed within a functional renormalisation group (RG) approach. The flow equation for the effective interactions is evaluated on 1-loop level. The effective interactions diverge at a finite energy scale which is exponentially small for small bare interactions. To analyse the nature of the instabilities signalled by the diverging interactions, we compute the flow of the superconducting susceptibilities for various pairing symmetries and also charge and spin density susceptibilities. Depending on the choice of the model parameters (hopping amplitudes, interaction strength and band-filling) we find spin density wave instabilities or d-wave superconductivity as leading instability close to half-filling. This calculation establishes the existence of d-wave superconductivity in the Hubbard model beyond doubt.
