Abstract

We consider an ideal gas of Bose and Fermi atoms in a harmonic trap, with a Feshbach resonance in the interspecies atomic scattering that can lead to the formation of fermionic molecules. We map out the phase diagram for this three-component mixture in chemical and thermal equilibrium. Considering adiabatic association and dissociation of the molecules, we identify a possible cooling cycle, which in ideal circumstances can yield an exponential increase of the phase-space density.

Adiabatic Phase Diagram of an Ultracold Atomic Fermi Gas with a Feshbach Resonance

Shohei Watabe, Tetsuro Nikuni, Nicolai Gayle Nygaard +2 more

We determine the adiabatic phase diagram of a resonantly-coupled system of Fermi atoms and Bose molecules confined in the harmonic trap by using the local density approximation. The adiabatic phase diagram shows the fermionic condensate fraction composed of condensed molecules and Cooper pair atoms. The key idea of our work is conservation of entropy through the adiabatic process, extending the study of Williams et al. [Williams et al., New J. Phys. 6, 123 (2004)] for an ideal gas mixture to include the resonant interaction in a mean-field theory. We also calculate the molecular conversion efficiency as a function of initial temperature. Our work helps to understand recent experiments on the BCS-BEC crossover, in terms of the initial temperature measured before a sweep of the magnetic field.

Phase diagrams for an ideal gas mixture of fermionic atoms and bosonic molecules

JAMES E. JUN. WILLIAMS, Nicolai Gayle Nygaard, Charles W. Clark

We calculate the phase diagrams for a harmonically trapped ideal gas mixture of fermionic atoms and bosonic molecules in chemical and thermal equilibrium, where the internal energy of the molecules can be adjusted relative to that of the atoms by use of a tunable Feshbach resonance. We plot the molecule fraction and the fraction of Bose-condensed molecules as functions of the temperature and internal molecular energy. We show the paths traversed in the phase diagrams when the molecular energy is varied either suddenly or adiabatically. Our model calculation helps to interpret the adiabatic phase diagrams obtained in recent experiments on the Bose–Einstein condensation to Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer crossover, in which the condensate fraction is plotted as a function of the initial temperature of the Fermi gas measured before a sweep of the magnetic field through the resonance region.

Ultracold Heteronuclear Fermi-Fermi Molecules

A.-C. Voigt, M. Taglieber, L. Costa +4 more

We report on the first creation of ultracold bosonic heteronuclear molecules of two fermionic species, 6Li and 40K, by a magnetic field sweep across an interspecies s-wave Feshbach resonance. This allows us to associate up to 4x10(4) molecules with high efficiencies of up to 50%. Using direct imaging of the molecules, we measure increased lifetimes of the molecules close to resonance of more than 100 ms in the molecule-atom mixture stored in a harmonic trap.

Investigation and manipulation of quantum gas mixtures of 40K and 87Rb

Leif Humbert, Silke Ospelkaus, C. Ospelkaus +2 more

We have studied the interaction of an ultracold heteronuclear Fermi-Bose mixture of fermionic 40K and bosonic 87Rb near Feshbach resonances. In a harmonic trap we demonstrate the complete phase diagram from phase separation to collapse. We also identify a resonance as a p-wave resonance by its characteristic doublet structure.

Heteronuclear Molecules from a Quantum Degenerate Fermi-Fermi Mixture

This thesis reports on experiments with quantum degenerate atomic mixtures and molecular gases at ultracold temperatures. The work describes the first realization of a quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture of two different species with unequal masses. In addition, the first quantum degenerate three-species mixture is realized.Furthermore, the first heteronuclear bosonic molecules with temperatures close to quantum degeneracy are created from a two-species mixture.Within this work a new and very versatile experimental platform to study quantum degenerate two-species Fermi mixtures is presented. The experimental concept relies on sympathetic cooling of two fermionic species ( 40 K and 6 Li) by a large bosonic gas ( 87 Rb).It is shown that large atom numbers and reliable operation are guaranteed by careful choice of the experimental components and parameters, which is essential to deal with the complexity of such an experimental platform with three atomic species. The first important milestone towards quantum degeneracy is realized by simultaneous trapping 87 Rb, 40 K and 6 Li in a magneto-optical trap. This marks the first realization of magneto-optical trapping of two fermionic species and also of three species. To achieve quantum degeneracy, different experimental challenges and difficulties of the three species with very different initial temperatures, scattering cross sections and masses were overcome.A combined compressed MOT and temporal dark MOT phase, a careful state cleaning process during the cooling process, species selective evaporative cooling of rubidium and removing of high energetic lithium atoms turn out to be essential for the successful realization of a quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi-Bose mixture.Furthermore, at the end of the sympathetic cooling process, the cooling efficiency of lithium is improved by catalytic cooling through potassium.A quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture can be realized in the strongly interacting regime at a s-wave Feshbach resonance.By an adiabatic magnetic field sweep across the Feshbach resonance ultracold bosonic heteronuclear molecules are created with high efficiencies of up to 50 %.The associated number of molecules are up to 4 × 10 4 molecules, which is the largest number of heteronuclear molecules produced so far.Furthermore, close to resonance an increased molecular lifetime of more than 100 ms is observed. Therefore, this is the first system that may be used to explore many-body physics of a heteronuclear mixture in the strongly interacting regime across a Feshbach resonance. The heteronuclear Fermi mixture adds the mass ratio and the different internal structure as new parameters to quantum degenerate Fermi gases. The molecular cloud being close to quantum degeneracy marks the first starting point for the realization of a heteronuclear molecular BEC and to investigate the BEC-BCS crossover with unequal masses. Moreover, the molecules can be transferred into the rovibrational ground state to create a polar BEC with an anisotropic, long-range interaction.

Thermal equilibrium and efficient evaporation of an ultracold atom-molecule mixture

Cheng Chin, Rudolf Grimm

We derive the equilibrium conditions for a thermal atom-molecule mixture near a Feshbach resonance. Under the assumption of low collisional loss, thermodynamical properties are calculated and compared to the measurements of a recent experiment on thermal fermionic lithium atoms. We discuss and evaluate possible collision mechanisms which can lead to atom-molecule conversion. Finally, we propose a novel evaporative cooling scheme to efficiently cool the molecules toward Bose-Einstein condensation.
