Abstract

We report on the first creation of ultracold bosonic heteronuclear molecules of two fermionic species, 6Li and 40K, by a magnetic field sweep across an interspecies s-wave Feshbach resonance. This allows us to associate up to 4x10(4) molecules with high efficiencies of up to 50%. Using direct imaging of the molecules, we measure increased lifetimes of the molecules close to resonance of more than 100 ms in the molecule-atom mixture stored in a harmonic trap.

Ultracold Heteronuclear Molecules created from Quantum Gases

C. Ospelkaus, Silke Ospelkaus, Leif Humbert +6 more

This work discusses the first creation of long-lived heteronuclear molecules made from fermionic40K and bosonic87Rb atoms. A suppression of collisions is achieved by the creation and storage of individual molecules in separate wells of an optical lattice. In particular, a quantum degenerate Fermi-Bose mixture in a 3D optical lattice is obtained, the magnetic field close to an interspecies Feshbach resonance is tuned, and the rf association of the atoms is performed.

An interacting Fermi-Fermi mixture at the crossover of a narrow Feshbach resonance

L. Costa

This work describes experiments with quantum-degenerate atomic mixtures at ultracold temperatures, where quantum statistics determine macroscopic system properties. The first heteronuclear molecules at ultracold temperatures are formed in a quantum degenerate two-species Fermi-Fermi mixture on the repulsive side of a narrow s-wave Feshbach resonance. Elastic collisions in this mixture are investigated with the method of cross-dimensional relaxation. Long-lived two-body bound states on the atomic side of the resonance are detected due to a many-body effect at the crossover of the narrow Feshbach resonance. In addition, atom scattering with fermionic 40K on a light field grating in the Bragg and Kapitza-Dirac regimes is realized for the first time. The versatile experimental platform, where the investigations are done, offers the possibility to perform studies on mixtures involving the bosonic species 87Rb and the two fermionic species 6Li and 40K. Within this work, mainly interactions between the two fermionic species are considered. A quantum-degenerate mixture of 6Li and 40K can be used to create heteronuclear bosonic molecules close to an interspecies s-wave Feshbach resonance. By an adiabatic magnetic field sweep, up to 4 × 10^4 molecules are produced with conversion efficiencies close to 50%. A direct and sensitive molecule detection method is developed to probe molecule properties. The lifetime of the molecules in an atom-molecule mixture exhibits a strong magnetic field dependence. Close to resonance, lifetimes of more than 100ms are observed what offers excellent starting conditions for further investigation and manipulation of the molecular cloud. The interspecies Feshbach resonance, which serves for the production of molecules, is further characterized. The method of cross-dimensional relaxation is applied for the first time to a Fermi-Fermi mixture. For this method, a non-equilibrium state is created, which rethermalizes by pure interspecies collisions due to the fermionic nature of the two species. The lighter atomic species, 6Li, relaxes faster in the mixture than the heavier one, 40K. This is verified by an analytical model, Monte-Carlo simulations, and measurements. With this technique, elastic scattering cross sections are measured over a wide range of magnetic field strengths across the Feshbach resonance. The position (B0 = 154.71(5)G) and the magnetic field width of the Feshbach resonance (Delta = 1.02(7)G) are determined. By comparison of the several measurements, long-lived bound states exist on the atomic side of the resonance due to a many-body effect in the crossover regime of the resonance. In addition, atomic scattering with ultracold 40K on a light field crystal is studied for the first time. The light grating is generated by two counter-propagating laser beams. Suitable pulse parameters for the realization of atom scattering in the Bragg and Kapitza-Dirac regime are found. The momentum spread of the cloud determines the efficiency of the scattering process, which is increased by lowering the temperature of the system.

Ultracold Heteronuclear Molecules in a 3D Optical Lattice

C. Ospelkaus, Silke Ospelkaus, Leif Humbert +3 more

We report on the creation of ultracold heteronuclear molecules assembled from fermionic 40K and bosonic 87Rb atoms in a 3D optical lattice. Molecules are produced at a heteronuclear Feshbach resonance on both the attractive and the repulsive sides of the resonance. We precisely determine the binding energy of the heteronuclear molecules from rf spectroscopy across the Feshbach resonance. We characterize the lifetime of the molecular sample as a function of magnetic field and measure lifetimes between 20 and 120 ms. The efficiency of molecule creation via rf association is measured and is found to decrease as expected for more deeply bound molecules.

Heteronuclear Molecules from a Quantum Degenerate Fermi-Fermi Mixture

Arne-Christian Voigt

This thesis reports on experiments with quantum degenerate atomic mixtures and molecular gases at ultracold temperatures. The work describes the first realization of a quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture of two different species with unequal masses. In addition, the first quantum degenerate three-species mixture is realized.Furthermore, the first heteronuclear bosonic molecules with temperatures close to quantum degeneracy are created from a two-species mixture.Within this work a new and very versatile experimental platform to study quantum degenerate two-species Fermi mixtures is presented. The experimental concept relies on sympathetic cooling of two fermionic species ( 40 K and 6 Li) by a large bosonic gas ( 87 Rb).It is shown that large atom numbers and reliable operation are guaranteed by careful choice of the experimental components and parameters, which is essential to deal with the complexity of such an experimental platform with three atomic species. The first important milestone towards quantum degeneracy is realized by simultaneous trapping 87 Rb, 40 K and 6 Li in a magneto-optical trap. This marks the first realization of magneto-optical trapping of two fermionic species and also of three species. To achieve quantum degeneracy, different experimental challenges and difficulties of the three species with very different initial temperatures, scattering cross sections and masses were overcome.A combined compressed MOT and temporal dark MOT phase, a careful state cleaning process during the cooling process, species selective evaporative cooling of rubidium and removing of high energetic lithium atoms turn out to be essential for the successful realization of a quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi-Bose mixture.Furthermore, at the end of the sympathetic cooling process, the cooling efficiency of lithium is improved by catalytic cooling through potassium.A quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture can be realized in the strongly interacting regime at a s-wave Feshbach resonance.By an adiabatic magnetic field sweep across the Feshbach resonance ultracold bosonic heteronuclear molecules are created with high efficiencies of up to 50 %.The associated number of molecules are up to 4 × 10 4 molecules, which is the largest number of heteronuclear molecules produced so far.Furthermore, close to resonance an increased molecular lifetime of more than 100 ms is observed. Therefore, this is the first system that may be used to explore many-body physics of a heteronuclear mixture in the strongly interacting regime across a Feshbach resonance. The heteronuclear Fermi mixture adds the mass ratio and the different internal structure as new parameters to quantum degenerate Fermi gases. The molecular cloud being close to quantum degeneracy marks the first starting point for the realization of a heteronuclear molecular BEC and to investigate the BEC-BCS crossover with unequal masses. Moreover, the molecules can be transferred into the rovibrational ground state to create a polar BEC with an anisotropic, long-range interaction.

Creation of ultracold heteronuclear p-wave Feshbach molecules

Fan Jia, Zhichao Guo, Zerong Huang +1 more

We report the first creation of a bulk sample of ultracold heteronuclear p-wave Feshbach molecules in an optically trapped Bose-Bose mixture of 23Na and 87Rb atoms. Using loss spectroscopy and binding energy measurements, we systematically characterize the interspecies p-wave Feshbach resonances near 284 G. Leveraging this understanding, we use magneto-association to form p-wave NaRb Feshbach molecules, producing both pure samples and mixtures of molecules in different p-wave orbitals. We further measure the molecular lifetime and identify atom-molecule and molecule-molecule collisions as the dominant loss mechanisms. This work establishes a previously unavailable ultracold molecule platform that combines orbital anisotropy with heteronuclear constituents, represents a significant step toward realizing tunable p-wave interactions in Bose-Bose mixtures, and provides a foundation for exploring non-zero angular momentum molecules.

Heteronuclear molecules in an optical dipole trap

J. J. Zirbel, Kang-Kuen Ni, Silke Ospelkaus +6 more

We report on the creation and characterization of heteronuclear $^{40}\text{K}^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ Feshbach molecules in an optical dipole trap. Starting from an ultracold gas mixture of $^{40}\text{K}$ and $^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ atoms, we create as many as 25 000 molecules at 300 nK by rf association. Optimizing the association process, we achieve a conversion efficiency of 25%. We measure the temperature dependence of the rf association process and find good agreement with a phenomenological model that has previously been applied to Feshbach molecule creation by slow magnetic-field sweeps. We also present a measurement of the binding energy of the heteronuclear molecules in the vicinity of the Feshbach resonance and provide evidence for Feshbach molecules as deeply bound as 26 MHz.
