Partially Asymmetric Exclusion Models with Quenched Disorder

Abstract

We consider the one-dimensional partially asymmetric exclusion process with random hopping rates, in which a fraction of particles (or sites) have a preferential jumping direction against the global drift. In this case, the accumulated distance traveled by the particles, x, scales with the time, t, as x approximately t(1/z), with a dynamical exponent z>0. Using extreme value statistics and an asymptotically exact strong disorder renormalization group method, we exactly calculate z(PW) for particlewise disorder, which is argued to be related as z(SW)=z(PW)/2 for sitewise disorder. In the symmetric case with zero mean drift, the particle diffusion is ultraslow, logarithmic in time.

Position-space renormalization-group approach for driven diffusive systems applied to the asymmetric exclusion model

Ivan T. Georgiev, Susan R. McKay

This paper introduces a position-space renormalization-group approach for nonequilibrium systems and applies the method to a driven stochastic one-dimensional gas with open boundaries. The dynamics are characterized by three parameters: the probability alpha that a particle will flow into the chain to the leftmost site, the probability beta that a particle will flow out from the rightmost site, and the probability p that a particle will jump to the right if the site to the right is empty. The renormalization-group procedure is conducted within the space of these transition probabilities, which are relevant to the system's dynamics. The method yields a critical point at alpha(c)=beta(c)=1/2, in agreement with the exact values, and the critical exponent nu=2.71, as compared with the exact value nu=2.00.

Strong Griffiths singularities in random systems and their relation to extreme value statistics

Róbert Juhász, Yu‐Cheng Lin, Ferenc Iglói

We consider interacting many-particle systems with quenched disorder having strong Griffiths singularities, which are characterized by the dynamical exponent, $z$, such as random quantum systems and exclusion processes. In several $d=1$ and $d=2$ dimensional problems we have calculated the inverse time scales, ${\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, in finite samples of linear size, $L$, either exactly or numerically. In all cases, having a discrete symmetry, the distribution function, $P({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}1},L)$, is found to depend on the variable, $u={\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}{L}^{z}$, and to be universal given by the limit distribution of extremes of independent and identically distributed random numbers. This finding is explained in the framework of a strong disorder renormalization group approach when, after fast degrees of freedom are decimated out, the system is transformed into a set of noninteracting localized excitations. The Fr\'echet distribution of $P({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}1},L)$ is expected to hold for all random systems having a strong disorder fixed point, in which the Griffiths singularities are dominated by disorder fluctuations.

Finite-Time Fluctuations for the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process

Sylvain Prolhac

The one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, a Markov process describing classical hard-core particles hopping in the same direction, is considered on a periodic lattice of L sites. The relaxation to the nonequilibrium steady state, which occurs on the time scale t∼L^{3/2} for large L, is studied for the half-filled system with N=L/2 particles. Using large L asymptotics of Bethe ansatz formulas for the eigenstates, exact expressions depending explicitly on the rescaled time t/L^{3/2} are obtained for the average and two-point function of the local density, and for the current fluctuations for simple (stationary, flat and step) initial conditions, relating previous results for the infinite system to stationary large deviations. The final formulas have a nice interpretation in terms of a functional integral with the action of a scalar field in a linear potential.

Bethe ansatz solution of zero-range process with nonuniform stationary state

Alexander M. Povolotsky

The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the master equation for zero-range process with totally asymmetric dynamics on a ring are found exactly using the Bethe ansatz weighted with the stationary weights of particle configurations. The Bethe ansatz applicability requires the rates of hopping of particles out of a site to be the q numbers [n](q). This is a generalization of the rates of hopping of noninteracting particles equal to the occupation number n of a site of departure. The noninteracting case can be restored in the limit q-->1. The limiting cases of the model for q=0, infinity correspond to the totally asymmetric exclusion process, and the drop-push model, respectively. We analyze the partition function of the model and apply the Bethe ansatz to evaluate the generating function of the total distance traveled by particles at large time in the scaling limit. In case of nonzero interaction, q not equal 1, the generating function has the universal scaling form specific for the Kardar-Parizi-Zhang universality class.

Exact relaxation dynamics in the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process

Kohei Motegi, Kazumitsu Sakai, Jun Sato

The relaxation dynamics of the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring is considered in the case of step initial condition. Analyzing the time evolution of the local particle densities and currents by the Bethe ansatz method, we examine their full relaxation dynamics. As a result, we observe peculiar behaviors, such as the emergence of a ripple in the density profile and the existence of the excessive particle currents. Moreover, by making a finite-size scaling analysis of the asymptotic amplitudes of the local densities and currents, we find the scaling exponents with respect to the total number of sites to be -3/2 and -1, respectively.

Extrapolation methods and Bethe ansatz for the asymmetric exclusion process

Sylvain Prolhac

Abstract The one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), where N hard-core particles hop forward with rate 1 and backward with rate q < 1 , is considered on a periodic lattice of L site. Using KPZ universality and previous results for the totally asymmetric model q = 0 , precise conjectures are formulated for asymptotics at finite density ρ = N / L of ASEP eigenstates close to the stationary state. The conjectures are checked with high precision using extrapolation methods on finite size Bethe ansatz numerics. For weak asymmetry 1 − q ∼ 1 / L , double extrapolation combined with an integer relation algorithm gives an exact expression for the spectral gap up to 10th order in the asymmetry.
