Finite-Time Fluctuations for the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process

Abstract

The one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, a Markov process describing classical hard-core particles hopping in the same direction, is considered on a periodic lattice of L sites. The relaxation to the nonequilibrium steady state, which occurs on the time scale t∼L^{3/2} for large L, is studied for the half-filled system with N=L/2 particles. Using large L asymptotics of Bethe ansatz formulas for the eigenstates, exact expressions depending explicitly on the rescaled time t/L^{3/2} are obtained for the average and two-point function of the local density, and for the current fluctuations for simple (stationary, flat and step) initial conditions, relating previous results for the infinite system to stationary large deviations. The final formulas have a nice interpretation in terms of a functional integral with the action of a scalar field in a linear potential.

Exact relaxation dynamics in the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process

Kohei Motegi, Kazumitsu Sakai, Jun Sato

The relaxation dynamics of the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring is considered in the case of step initial condition. Analyzing the time evolution of the local particle densities and currents by the Bethe ansatz method, we examine their full relaxation dynamics. As a result, we observe peculiar behaviors, such as the emergence of a ripple in the density profile and the existence of the excessive particle currents. Moreover, by making a finite-size scaling analysis of the asymptotic amplitudes of the local densities and currents, we find the scaling exponents with respect to the total number of sites to be -3/2 and -1, respectively.

Extrapolation methods and Bethe ansatz for the asymmetric exclusion process

Sylvain Prolhac

Abstract The one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), where N hard-core particles hop forward with rate 1 and backward with rate q < 1 , is considered on a periodic lattice of L site. Using KPZ universality and previous results for the totally asymmetric model q = 0 , precise conjectures are formulated for asymptotics at finite density ρ = N / L of ASEP eigenstates close to the stationary state. The conjectures are checked with high precision using extrapolation methods on finite size Bethe ansatz numerics. For weak asymmetry 1 − q ∼ 1 / L , double extrapolation combined with an integer relation algorithm gives an exact expression for the spectral gap up to 10th order in the asymmetry.

Spectrum of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice-first excited states

Sylvain Prolhac

We consider the spectrum of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice of L sites. The first eigenstates have an eigenvalue with real part scaling as for large L with finite density of particles. Bethe ansatz shows that these eigenstates are characterized by four finite sets of positive half-integers, or equivalently by two integer partitions. Each corresponding eigenvalue is found to be equal to the value at its saddle point of a function indexed by the four sets. Our derivation of the large L asymptotics relies on a version of the Euler–Maclaurin formula with square root singularities at both ends of the summation range.

Long time asymptotics of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process

Kohei Motegi, Kazumitsu Sakai, Jun Sato

We study the long time asymptotics of the relaxation dynamics of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring.Evaluating the asymptotic amplitudes of the local currents by the algebraic Bethe ansatz method, we find that the relaxation times starting from the step and alternating initial conditions are governed by different eigenvalues of the Markov matrix. In both cases, the scaling exponents of the leading asymptotic amplitudes with respect to the total number of sites are found to be -1.We also study the asymptotics of correlation functions such as the emptiness formation probability.

Spectrum of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice—bulk eigenvalues

Sylvain Prolhac

We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a periodic one-dimensional lattice of L sites. Using Bethe ansatz, we derive parametric formulas for the eigenvalues of its generator in the thermodynamic limit. This allows to study the curve delimiting the edge of the spectrum in the complex plane. A functional integration over the eigenstates leads to an expression for the density of eigenvalues in the bulk of the spectrum. The density vanishes with an exponent 2/5 close to the eigenvalue 0.

Time-dependent correlation functions in a one-dimensional asymmetric exclusion process

Gunter Markus Schutz

We continue our studies [J. Stat. Phys. 71, 485 (1993)] of a one-dimensional anisotropic exclusion process with parallel dynamics describing particles moving to the right on a chain of L sites. Instead of considering periodic boundary conditions with a defect as in our studies, we study open boundary conditions with injection of particles with rate \ensuremath{\alpha} at the origin and absorption of particles with rate \ensuremath{\beta} at the boundary. We construct the steady state and compute the density profile as a function of \ensuremath{\alpha} and \ensuremath{\beta}. In the large-L limit we find a high-density phase (\ensuremath{\alpha}>\ensuremath{\beta}) and a low-density phase (\ensuremath{\alpha}). In both phases, the density distribution along the chain approaches its respective constant bulk value exponentially on a length scale \ensuremath{\xi}. They are separated by a phase-transition line where \ensuremath{\xi} diverges and where the density increases linearly with the distance from the origin. Furthermore, we present exact expressions for all equal-time n-point density correlation functions and for the time-dependent two-point function in the steady state. We compare our results with predictions from local dynamical scaling and discuss some conjectures for other exclusion models.
