Pairing in two-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures

Abstract

The possibilities of pairing in two-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures are carefully analyzed. It is shown that the boson-induced attraction between two identical fermions dominates the p wave pairing at low density. For a given fermion density, the pairing gap becomes maximal at a certain optimal boson concentration. The conditions for observing pairing in current experiments are discussed.

Pairing in cold Fermi gases and Fermi–Bose mixtures

Jordi Mur-Petit, A. Polls, M. Baldo +1 more

The possibilities of pairing in a low-density, cold Fermi gas interacting either through the interaction with another fermionic species or through a bosonic gas are analysed. In the latter case, special attention is devoted to the study of the experimentally relevant situation of a two-dimensional system. Estimates for the gaps at zero temperature in experimental conditions are presented.

Pairing of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures with unequal masses

Matteo Rizzi, Adilet Imambekov

We have considered one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture with equal densities and unequal masses using numerical density matrix renormalization group. For the mass ratio of K-Rb mixture and attraction between bosons and fermions, we determined the phase diagram. For weak boson-boson interactions, there is a direct transition between two-component Luttinger liquid and collapsed phases as the boson-fermion attraction is increased. For strong enough boson-boson interactions, we find an intermediate ``paired'' phase, which is a single-component Luttinger liquid of composite particles. We investigated correlation functions of such a ``paired'' phase, studied the stability of ``paired'' phase to density imbalance, and discussed various experimental techniques which can be used to detect it.

Effective p-wave Fermi-Fermi Interaction Induced by Bosonic Superfluids

Yongzheng Wu, Zheng Yan, Zhi Lin +2 more

We study the two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture on square lattice at finite temperature by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method within the weakly interacting regime. Here we consider the attractive Bose-Hubbard model and free spinless fermions. In the absence of boson-fermion interactions, we obtain the boundary of the collapsed state of the attractive bosons. In the presence of boson-fermion interactions, an effective p-wave interaction between fermions will be induced as far as the bosons are in a superfluid state. Moreover, we find the emergence of the composite fermion pairs at low temperatures.

Boson-induced s -wave pairing in dilute boson-fermion mixtures

Luciano Viverit

We show that in dilute boson-fermion mixtures with fermions in two internal states, even when the bare fermion-fermion interaction is repulsive, the exchange of density fluctuations of the Bose condensate may lead to an effective fermion-fermion attraction, and thus to a Cooper instability in the s-wave channel. We give a simple condition to know when this is going to happen, and an analytic expression for the associated ${T}_{c}$ in the most important limit where the phonon branch of the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of the bosons is important. We find a ${T}_{c}$ of the same order as for a pure Fermi gas with bare attraction.

p -wave Cooper pairing of fermions in mixtures of dilute Fermi and Bose gases

Dmitri V. Efremov, Luciano Viverit

We predict a p-wave Cooper pairing of the spin-polarized fermions in a binary fermion-boson mixture due to the exchange of density fluctuations of the bosonic medium. We then examine the dependence of the Cooper pairing temperature on the parameters of the system. We finally estimate the effect of combining the boson-induced interaction with other pairing mechanisms, e.g., the Kohn-Luttinger one, and find that the critical temperature of p-wave Cooper pairing can be realistic for experiment.

Boson-fermion pairing and condensation in two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

L. Pisani, Pietro Bovini, Fabrizio Pavan +1 more

We consider a mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions in two dimensions at zero temperature with a tunable Bose-Fermi attraction. By adopting a diagrammatic T T -matrix approach, we analyze the behavior of several thermodynamic quantities for the two species as a function of the density ratio and coupling strength, including the chemical potentials, the momentum distribution functions, the boson condensate density, and the Tan’s contact parameter. By increasing the Bose-Fermi attraction, we find that the condensate is progressively depleted and Bose-Fermi pairs form, with a small fraction of condensed bosons surviving even for strong Bose-Fermi attraction. This small condensate proves sufficient to hybridize molecular and atomic states, producing quasi-particles with unusual Fermi liquid features. A nearly universal behavior of the condensate fraction, the bosonic momentum distribution, and Tan’s contact parameter with respect to the density ratio is also found.
