Boson-induced s -wave pairing in dilute boson-fermion mixtures

Abstract

We show that in dilute boson-fermion mixtures with fermions in two internal states, even when the bare fermion-fermion interaction is repulsive, the exchange of density fluctuations of the Bose condensate may lead to an effective fermion-fermion attraction, and thus to a Cooper instability in the s-wave channel. We give a simple condition to know when this is going to happen, and an analytic expression for the associated ${T}_{c}$ in the most important limit where the phonon branch of the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of the bosons is important. We find a ${T}_{c}$ of the same order as for a pure Fermi gas with bare attraction.

Collective Excitations of Dilute Bose-Fermi Superfluid Mixtures

Bernhard Hikaru Valtan, Munehiro Nishida, Susumu Kurihara

Using the effective action formalism, we investigate collective excitations of a dilute mixture of a Bose gas and a two component Fermi gas when both bosons and fermions have undergone superfluid transitions. We show that there is a repulsion between Bogoliubov and Anderson modes, which has important implications including disappearance of boson superfluidity. We derive an analytic expression for the long-wavelength dispersion relation of the mixture at zero temperature and give a condition for the instability. We also numerically calculate the damping rate due to boson-fermion interaction at finite temperatures and show that the two modes are stable at sufficiently low temperatures.

p -wave Cooper pairing of fermions in mixtures of dilute Fermi and Bose gases

Dmitri V. Efremov, Luciano Viverit

We predict a p-wave Cooper pairing of the spin-polarized fermions in a binary fermion-boson mixture due to the exchange of density fluctuations of the bosonic medium. We then examine the dependence of the Cooper pairing temperature on the parameters of the system. We finally estimate the effect of combining the boson-induced interaction with other pairing mechanisms, e.g., the Kohn-Luttinger one, and find that the critical temperature of p-wave Cooper pairing can be realistic for experiment.

Fermion pairing in Bose-Fermi mixtures

F. Matera

An effective interaction between fermions in a Bose-Fermi mixture is derived. It is induced by density fluctuations of the bosonic background. The contributions from states containing both one and two virtual phonons are taken into account self-consistently. The time dependence of the effective interaction has been removed by assuming that the velocity of the fermions at the Fermi surface is much larger than the sound velocity in the Bose gas. This assumption is more appropriate for the actual experimental situations than the usual approximation of neglecting retardation effects. The effective interaction turns out to be attractive and, as a consequence, can give rise to a superconducting phase in the Fermi component of the mixture. The fermions are considered in only one magnetic state, so that pairing can be effective only in odd-$l$ channels. It has been found that the onset of the superconducting phase can occur at temperatures $(>100\mathrm{nK})$ of the same order of magnitude as the Fermi temperature $(\ensuremath{\sim}300\mathrm{nK}),$ and the energy gap in the excitation spectrum is a small fraction $(\ensuremath{\sim}1%)$ of the Fermi energy.

Ground-state properties of a dilute Bose-Fermi mixture

Luciano Viverit, S. Giorgini

We investigate the properties of a dilute boson-fermion mixture at zero temperature. The ground-state energy of the system is calculated to second order in the Bose-Fermi coupling constant. The Green's function formalism is applied to obtain results for the effect of Bose-Fermi interactions on the spectrum of phonon excitations, the momentum distribution, the condensate fraction, and the superfluid density of the bosonic component. A quantitative discussion of these effects is presented in the case of mixtures with attractive interspecies interaction.

Collective modes and stability of Bose-Fermi mixtures with a BCS-BEC crossover

Hiroyuki Shibata, Nobuhiko Yokoshi, Susumu Kurihara

We investigate an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture with a Feshbach resonance between two hyperfine states of fermions. Using a functional integral method, we calculate collective modes associated with fermion pairs and bosons in the superfluid phase. We derive a stability condition of the mixtures that is valid in the entire region of the BCS-BEC crossover. This stability condition, which smoothly connects the well-known results obtained in both the BCS and Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) limits, shows that sufficiently strong fermion-boson (FB) interactions destabilize the mixtures. In order to investigate the consequence of this instability, we study the ground-state energy of both the uniformly mixed and the phase-separated states. We find that FB repulsion induces a phase separation, whereas FB attraction should cause a collapse of the mixture. The possibilities for the experimental observation of such instabilities are also discussed.

Quantum critical superconductivity in a dense fermi dilute bose mixture close to mechanical instability

Vibhu Mishra

We couple a metal to an uncondensed bose gas with repulsive bose-fermi interactions in two dimensions. Within the random phase approximation, we show that the density fluctuations of the bosons, which mediate the effective fermion-fermion attraction, become long ranged on appropriate tuning of interactions. This leads to parametrically enhanced superconducting temperatures $T_c \propto g$ as opposed to $T_c \propto \exp(-1/g)$ for the BCS case. The dilute bose gas density acts as the primary bottleneck to the enhancement. We discuss the conceptual difficulties of implementing this idea in electron-exciton mixtures.
