Imperfect Fermi gas: Kinetic and interaction energies

Abstract

A uniform ground-state three-dimensional Fermi gas with short-range repulsive pairwise interaction is under consideration. Its kinetic and interaction energies are calculated up to the second order of the expansion in the gas parameter. Similar to recent results for an interacting Bose gas, the quantities in question are found to depend on the pairwise interaction through two characteristic lengths: the former, $a$, is the $s$-wave scattering length, and the latter, $b$, is related to $a$ by $b=a\ensuremath{-}m(\ensuremath{\partial}a∕\ensuremath{\partial}m)$, where $m$ stands for the fermion mass. To control the results, we proceed in two independent ways. The first involves the Hellmann-Feynman theorem applied to derive the kinetic and interaction energies from the total-energy expansion in the gas parameter first found by Huang and Yang. The second way operates with in-medium pair wave functions and allows one to calculate the quantities of interest ``from scratch.'' The results of the present investigation, taken together with those of the recent consideration of a dilute Bose gas, make it possible to conclude that the pairwise interaction in a quantum gas has an essential and nontrivial effect on the kinetic energy, which is not the case for a classical many-particle system.

Short-range particle correlations in a dilute Bose gas

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

The thermodynamics of a homogeneous dilute Bose gas with an arbitrarily strong repulsion between particles is investigated on the basis of the exact relation connecting the pair correlation function with the in-medium pair wave functions and occupation numbers. It is shown that the effective-interaction scheme, which is reduced to the Bogoliubov model with the effective pairwise potential, is not acceptable for investigating the short-range particle correlations in a dilute strongly interacting Bose gas. In contrast to this scheme, our model is thermodynamically consistent and free of the ultraviolet divergences due to accurate treatment of the short-range boson correlations. An equation for the in-medium scattering amplitude is derived that makes it possible to find the in-medium renormalization for the pair wave functions at short boson separations. Low-density expansions for the main thermodynamic quantities are reinvestigated on the basis of this equation. In addition, the expansions are found for the interaction and kinetic energies per particle. It is demonstrated that for a many-boson system of hard spheres the interaction energy is equal to zero for any boson density. The exact relationship between the chemical potential and in-medium pair wave functions is also established.

The Huang-Yang conjecture for the low-density Fermi gas

Emanuela L. Giacomelli, Christian Hainzl, Phan Thành Nam +1 more

Our work establishes a three-term asymptotic expansion of the ground state energy of a dilute gas of spin $1/2$ fermions with repulsive short-range interactions, validating a formula predicted by Huang and Yang in 1957. The formula is universal in the sense that it holds for a large class of interaction potentials and depends on those only via their scattering length. We have recently proved an upper bound on the ground state energy of the desired form, and the present work completes the program by proving the matching lower bound.

Dilute Bose gas revised

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

The well-known results concerning a dilute Bose gas with the short-range repulsive interaction should be reconsidered due to a thermodynamic inconsistency of the method being basic to much of the present understanding of this subject. The aim of our paper is to propose another way of treating the dilute Bose gas with an arbitrary strong interaction. Using the reduced density matrix of the second order and a variational procedure, this way allows us to escape the inconsistency mentioned and operate with singular potentials of the Lennard-Jones type. The derived expansion of the condensate depletion in powers of the boson density n=N/V reproduces the familiar result, while the expansion for the mean energy per particle is of the form epsilon=2 pi planck(2)an/m[1+128/(15 square root of [pi]) square root of [na(3)](1-5b/8a)+...], where a is the scattering length and b> or =0 stands for one more characteristic length depending on the shape of the interaction potential (in particular, for the hard spheres a=b). All the consideration concerns the zero temperature.

Dilute Bose gas in two dimensions: Density expansions and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

A dilute homogeneous two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas at zero temperature is studied with the method developed earlier by the authors. This method allows for considering renormalization of an arbitrary pairwise potential in a self-consistent manner, without the pseudopotential delta-function representation. Low-density expansions are derived for the chemical potential, ground-state energy, pair distribution function, kinetic and interaction energies. The expansion parameter is found to be a dimensionless in-medium scattering amplitude u obeying the equation 1/u+ln u=-ln(na(2)pi)-2gamma, where na(2) and gamma are the gas parameter and the Euler constant, respectively. It is shown that the ground-state energy is mostly kinetic in the low-density limit. This result does not depend on a specific form of the pairwise interaction potential, contrary to the 3D case. A new form of the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation is proposed within our scheme.

Very Low-Temperature Fermi Gas

Franz Mohling

The momentum distribution in a low-temperature Fermi gas is investigated using the methods of quantum statistics developed by Lee and Yang together with the linked-pair expansions of the previous paper. It is shown that in order to determine the momentum distribution at very low temperatures two coupled integral equations must be considered, one in momentum variables and due to Lee and Yang, and the other in temperature variables. It is also shown that the dominant low-temperature behavior of the momentum distribution can be extracted in terms of a certain function ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(\mathrm{k})$. For a low-density Fermi gas with strong, short-range, two-body interactions, it is shown to third order in the scattering parameters of the interaction that at $T=0$ the function ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(\mathrm{k})$ is equal to the free particle momentum distribution. Also, the energy and other thermodynamic quantities are expressed in terms of ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(\mathrm{k})$, so that the theory permits a generalization of perturbation theoretic results to nonzero temperatures. The ground-state energy, momentum distribution, and thermodynamic potential are calculated to third order in the scattering parameters.

The Huang--Yang formula for a two-dimensional Fermi gas: upper bound

Christian Hainzl, Fabian Saxler, Robert Seiringer

We compute an upper bound on the ground state energy of a dilute two-dimensional Fermi gas with repulsive short-range interactions. Our bound can be viewed as the two-dimensional analogue of a formula derived by Huang and Yang in the three-dimensional case. It captures the first three terms in an asymptotic expansion for small $\varrho a^2$, where $\varrho$ denotes the density and $a$ the scattering length of the interaction potential.
