Abstract

Mode-mixing of coherent excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is modeled using the Bogoliubov approximation. Calculations are presented for second-harmonic generation between the two lowest-lying even-parity $m=0$ modes in an oblate spheroidal trap. Hybridization of the modes of the breather $(l=0)$ and surface $(l=4)$ states leads to the formation of a Bogoliubov dark state near phase-matching resonance so that a single mode is coherently populated. Efficient harmonic generation requires a strong coupling rate, sharply-defined and well-separated frequency spectrum, and good phase matching. We find that in all three respects the quantal results are significantly different from hydrodynamic predictions. Typically the second-harmonic conversion rate is half that given by an equivalent hydrodynamic estimate.

Second-harmonic generation of Bogoliubov excitations in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

Guoxiang Huang, Xin-Qi Li, Jacob Szeftel

A second-harmonic generation (SHG) is predicted for the Bogoliubov excitations in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that, because the linear dispersion curve of the excitations displays two branches, the phase-matching condition for the SHG can be fulfilled if the wave vectors and frequencies of fundamental and second-harmonic waves are selected suitably from different branches. The nonlinearly coupled envelope equations for the SHG are derived by using a method of multiple scales. The explicit solutions of these envelope equations are provided and the conversion efficiency of the SHG is also discussed.

Excited states of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap

Alexander L. Fetter, Daniel S. Rokhsar

The low-lying hydrodynamic normal modes of a dilute Bose-Einstein gas in an isotropic harmonic trap determine the corresponding Bogoliubov amplitudes. In the Thomas-Fermi limit, these modes have large low-temperature occupation numbers and they permit an explicit construction of the dynamic structure function $S(\mathbf{q},\ensuremath{\omega})$. The total noncondensate number ${N}^{\ensuremath{'}}(0)$ at zero temperature increases like ${R}^{6}$, where $R$ is the condensate radius measured in units of the oscillator length. The lowest dipole modes are constructed explicitly in the Bogoliubov approximation.

Bogoliubov modes of a dipolar condensate in a cylindrical trap

Shai Ronen, Daniele C. E. Bortolotti, John L. Bohn

The calculation of properties of Bose-Einstein condensates with dipolar interactions has proven a computationally intensive problem due to the long range nature of the interactions, limiting the scope of applications. In particular, the lowest lying Bogoliubov excitations in three-dimensional harmonic trap with cylindrical symmetry were so far computed in an indirect way, by Fourier analysis of time-dependent perturbations, or by approximate variational methods. We have developed a very fast and accurate numerical algorithm based on the Hankel transform for calculating properties of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in cylindrically symmetric traps. As an application, we are able to compute many excitation modes by directly solving the Bogoliubov-De Gennes equations. We explore the behavior of the excited modes in different trap geometries. We use these results to calculate the quantum depletion of the condensate by a combination of a computation of the exact modes and the use of a local density approximation.

Quadrupole and scissors modes and nonlinear mode coupling in trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Kenichi Kasamatsu, Makoto Tsubota, Masahito Ueda

We theoretically investigate quadrupolar collective excitations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and their nonlinear dynamics associated with harmonic generation and mode coupling. Under the Thomas-Fermi approximation and the quadratic polynomial ansatz for density fluctuations, the linear analysis of the superfluid hydrodynamic equations predicts excitation frequencies of three normal modes constituted from monopole and quadrupole oscillations, and those of three scissors modes. These six modes are bifurcated into in-phase and out-of-phase modes by the intercomponent interaction, yielding the nonlinear dynamics that are absent in a single-component condensate. We obtain analytically the resonance conditions for the second-harmonic generation in terms of the trap aspect ratio and the strength of intercomponent interaction. The numerical simulation of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations vindicates the validity of the analytical results and reveals the dynamics of the second-harmonic generation and nonlinear mode coupling that lead to nonlinear oscillations of the condensate with damping and recurrence reminiscent of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem.

Anomalous hybridization and nonlinear mode coupling of collective modes in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Dermot McPeake, E. Nugent, J F McCann

We investigate the coupling between collective modes of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We reveal the hybrid nature of these modes for certain trap geometries and show how the hybridization process leads to the formation of coherent-matter dark states. The effect of these hybrid states on mode coupling processes is discussed and studied as a function of the trap modulation. We complement the Bogoliubov approach with a time-dependent method directly simulating the axial and radial oscillations of the trapped condensate corresponding to the experimental parameters of Hechenblaikner et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 692 (2000)).

Resonant generation of topological modes in trapped Bose-Einstein gases

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov, Karl-Peter Marzlin, Elizaveta P. Yukalova

Trapped atoms cooled down to temperatures below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature are considered. Stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) define the topological coherent modes, representing nonground-state Bose-Einstein condensates. These modes can be generated by means of alternating fields whose frequencies are in resonance with the transition frequencies between two collective energy levels corresponding to two different topological modes. The theory of resonant generation of these modes is generalized in several aspects: Multiple-mode formation is described; a shape-conservation criterion is derived, imposing restrictions on the admissible spatial dependence of resonant fields; evolution equations for the case of three coherent modes are investigated; the complete stability analysis is accomplished; the effects of harmonic generation and parametric conversion for the topological coherent modes are predicted. All considerations are realized both by employing approximate analytical methods as well as by numerically solving the GPE. Numerical solutions confirm all conclusions following from analytical methods.
