Anomalous hybridization and nonlinear mode coupling of collective modes in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

We investigate the coupling between collective modes of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We reveal the hybrid nature of these modes for certain trap geometries and show how the hybridization process leads to the formation of coherent-matter dark states. The effect of these hybrid states on mode coupling processes is discussed and studied as a function of the trap modulation. We complement the Bogoliubov approach with a time-dependent method directly simulating the axial and radial oscillations of the trapped condensate corresponding to the experimental parameters of Hechenblaikner et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 692 (2000)).

Collective modes of trapped spinor Bose–Einstein condensates

C Trallero-Giner, Darío G. Santiago-Pérez, Vı́ctor Romero-Rochı́n +1 more

Abstract We study the structure of quasi-one-dimensional Bogoliubov–de Genes collective excitations of inhomogeneous F = 1 spinor Bose–Einstein condensates confined by a harmonic trap potential and loaded into an optical lattice. Employing a perturbative method, we report general analytical expressions for the polar and ferromagnetic confined collective oscillations. In both cases, the excited eigenfrequencies are given as functions of the effective 1D coupling constants, the trap frequency and the optical lattice parameters. While the presence of the trap yields quantized longitudinal collective modes, whose spectra depends on the collision scattering lengths, the optical lattice shifts their frequencies and, more importantly, yields tunable oscillations of the spin populations, for the even modes, as experimentally observed.

Parametric and geometric resonances of collective oscillation modes in Bose–Einstein condensates

Ivana Vidanović, Hamid Al-Jibbouri, Antun Balaž +1 more

We analytically and numerically study nonlinear dynamics in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) induced either by a harmonic modulation of the interaction or by the geometry of the trapping potential. To analytically describe BEC dynamics, we use a perturbative expansion based on the Poincaré–Lindstedt analysis of a Gaussian variational ansatz, whereas in the numerical approach we use numerical solutions of both a variational system of equations and the full time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The harmonic modulation of the atomic s-wave scattering length of a BEC of 7 Li was achieved recently via Feshbach resonance, and such a modulation leads to a number of nonlinear effects, which we describe within our approach: mode coupling, higher harmonics generation and significant shifts in the frequencies of collective modes. In addition to the strength of atomic interactions, the geometry of the trapping potential is another key factor for the dynamics of the condensate, as well as for its collective modes. The asymmetry of the confining potential leads to important nonlinear effects, including resonances in the frequencies of collective modes of the condensate. We study in detail such geometric resonances and derive explicit analytic results for frequency shifts for the case of an axially symmetric condensate with two- and three-body interactions. Analytically obtained results are verified by extensive numerical simulations.

Trapped Bose–Einstein condensates with nonlinear coherent modes

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov, Elizaveta P. Yukalova, Vanderlei Salvador Bagnato

Abstract The review presents the methods of generation of nonlinear coherent excitations in strongly nonequilibrium Bose-condensed systems of trapped atoms and their properties. Non-ground-state Bose–Einstein condensates are represented by nonlinear coherent modes. The principal difference of nonlinear coherent modes from linear collective excitations is emphasized. Methods of generating nonlinear modes and the properties of the latter are described. Matter-wave interferometry with coherent modes is discussed, including such effects as interference patterns, internal Josephson current, Rabi oscillations, Ramsey fringes, harmonic generation, and parametric conversion. Dynamic transition between mode-locked and mode-unlocked regimes is shown to be analogous to a phase transition. Atomic squeezing and entanglement in a lattice of condensed atomic clouds with coherent modes are considered. Nonequilibrium states of trapped Bose-condensed systems, starting from weakly nonequilibrium state, vortex state, vortex turbulence, droplet or grain turbulence, and wave turbulence, are classified by means of effective Fresnel and Mach numbers. The inverse Kibble–Zurek scenario is described. A method for the formation of directed beams from atom lasers is reported.

Wave mixing of hybrid Bogoliubov modes in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Dermot McPeake, J F McCann

Mode-mixing of coherent excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is modeled using the Bogoliubov approximation. Calculations are presented for second-harmonic generation between the two lowest-lying even-parity $m=0$ modes in an oblate spheroidal trap. Hybridization of the modes of the breather $(l=0)$ and surface $(l=4)$ states leads to the formation of a Bogoliubov dark state near phase-matching resonance so that a single mode is coherently populated. Efficient harmonic generation requires a strong coupling rate, sharply-defined and well-separated frequency spectrum, and good phase matching. We find that in all three respects the quantal results are significantly different from hydrodynamic predictions. Typically the second-harmonic conversion rate is half that given by an equivalent hydrodynamic estimate.

Collective modes of a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas in the presence of the anomalous density

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We study the collective modes of a one-dimensional harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the anomalous density using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Within the hydrodynamic equations, we derive analytical expressions for the mode frequencies and the density fluctuations of the anomalous density which constitutes the minority component at very low temperature and feels an effective external potential exerted by the majority component, i.e., the condensate. On the other hand, we numerically examine the temperature dependence of the breathing mode oscillations of the condensate at finite temperature in the weak-coupling regime. At zero temperature, we compare our predictions with available experimental data, theoretical treatments, and Monte carlo simulations in all interaction regimes and the remaining hindrances are emphasized. We show that the anomalous correlations have a non-negligible role on the collective modes at both zero and finite temperatures.

Collective modes of ground and excited states of Bose–Einstein condensates in axially symmetric anisotropic traps

M. S. Pindzola, Baoqing Sun

Collective modes of the ground and excited states of Bose?Einstein condensates are calculated by diagonalization of the Bogoliubov?de Gennes matrix in cylindrical coordinates. For an isotropic magnetic trap, the first breathing mode frequencies of the ground and dark soliton excited states are found to be in excellent agreement with a direct solution of the Gross?Pitaevskii equation with a time-dependent driving potential. In addition, the matrix diagonalization yields densities and frequencies for second breathing modes and higher order multipole modes. For an axially symmetric anisotropic trap, a considerable number of collective modes of the ground and dark soliton excited states are calculated. Prolate traps are found to have many more low-frequency multipolar modes than found in oblate traps for both ground and dark soliton excited states.
