Abstract

The calculation of properties of Bose-Einstein condensates with dipolar interactions has proven a computationally intensive problem due to the long range nature of the interactions, limiting the scope of applications. In particular, the lowest lying Bogoliubov excitations in three-dimensional harmonic trap with cylindrical symmetry were so far computed in an indirect way, by Fourier analysis of time-dependent perturbations, or by approximate variational methods. We have developed a very fast and accurate numerical algorithm based on the Hankel transform for calculating properties of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in cylindrically symmetric traps. As an application, we are able to compute many excitation modes by directly solving the Bogoliubov-De Gennes equations. We explore the behavior of the excited modes in different trap geometries. We use these results to calculate the quantum depletion of the condensate by a combination of a computation of the exact modes and the use of a local density approximation.

Beyond mean-field low-lying excitations of dipolar Bose gases

Aristeu R. P. Lima, Axel Pelster

We theoretically investigate various beyond mean-field effects on Bose gases at zero temperature featuring the anisotropic and long-range dipole-dipole interaction in addition to the isotropic and short-range contact interaction. Within the realm of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes theory, we consider static properties and low-lying excitations of both homogeneous and harmonically trapped dipolar bosonic gases. For the homogeneous system, the condensate depletion, the ground-state energy, the equation of state, and the speed of sound are discussed in detail. Making use of the local density approximation, we extend these results in order to study the properties of a dipolar Bose gas in a harmonic trap and in the regime of large particle numbers. After deriving the equations of motion for the general case of a triaxial trap, we analyze the influence of quantum fluctuations on important properties of the gas, such as the equilibrium configuration and the low-lying excitations in the case of a cylinder-symmetric trap. In addition to the monopole and quadrupole oscillation modes, we also discuss the radial quadrupole mode. We find that the latter acquires a quantum correction exclusively due to the dipole-dipole interaction. As a result, we identify the radial quadrupole as a reasonably accessible source for the signature of dipolar many-body effects and stress the enhancing character that dipolar interactions have for quantum fluctuations in the other oscillation modes.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature

Shai Ronen, John L. Bohn

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas with dipolar interactions, at finite temperature, using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation. An additional approximation involving the dipolar exchange interaction is made to facilitate the computation. We calculate the temperature dependence of the condensate fraction of a condensate confined in a cylindrically symmetric harmonic trap. We show that the biconcave-shaped condensates found in [Ronen et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 30406 (2007)] in certain pancake traps at zero temperature are also stable at finite temperature. Surprisingly, the dip in the central density of these structured condensates is actually enhanced at low finite temperatures. We explain this effect.

A Spectrally Accurate Numerical Method for Computing the Bogoliubov--de Gennes Excitations of Dipolar Bose--Einstein Condensates

Qinglin Tang, Manting Xie, Yong Zhang +1 more

In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust numerical method to study the elementary excitation of dipolar Bose--Einstein condensates, which is governed by the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations (BdGEs) with nonlocal dipole-dipole interaction, around the mean field ground state. Analytical properties of the BdGEs are investigated, which could serve as benchmarks for the numerical methods. To evaluate the nonlocal interactions accurately and efficiently, we propose a new simple Fourier spectral convolution (SFSC) method. Then, integrating SFSC with the standard Fourier spectral method for spatial discretization and implicitly restarted Arnoldi methods (IRAM) for the eigenvalue problem, we derive an efficient and spectrally accurate method, named the SFSC-IRAM, for the BdGEs. Ample numerical tests are provided to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency. Finally, we apply the new method to study systematically the excitation spectrum and Bogoliubov amplitudes around the ground state with different parameters in different spatial dimensions.

A variational approach to Bogoliubov excitations and dynamics of dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

Manuel Kreibich, Jörg Main, Günter Wunner

We investigate the stability properties and the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates with axial symmetry, especially with dipolar long-range interaction, using both simulations on grids and variational calculations. We present an extended variational ansatz which is applicable for axial symmetry and show that this ansatz can reproduce the lowest eigenfrequencies of the Bogoliubov spectrum, and also the corresponding eigenfunctions. Our variational ansatz is capable of describing the roton instability of pancake-shaped dipolar condensates for arbitrary angular momenta. After investigating the linear regime we apply the ansatz to determine the dynamics and show how the angular collapse is correctly described within the variational framework.

Collective modes of ground and excited states of Bose–Einstein condensates in axially symmetric anisotropic traps

M. S. Pindzola, Baoqing Sun

Collective modes of the ground and excited states of Bose?Einstein condensates are calculated by diagonalization of the Bogoliubov?de Gennes matrix in cylindrical coordinates. For an isotropic magnetic trap, the first breathing mode frequencies of the ground and dark soliton excited states are found to be in excellent agreement with a direct solution of the Gross?Pitaevskii equation with a time-dependent driving potential. In addition, the matrix diagonalization yields densities and frequencies for second breathing modes and higher order multipole modes. For an axially symmetric anisotropic trap, a considerable number of collective modes of the ground and dark soliton excited states are calculated. Prolate traps are found to have many more low-frequency multipolar modes than found in oblate traps for both ground and dark soliton excited states.

Bose–Einstein condensates with long-range interactions

Paulsamy Muruganandam, Ramaswamy Radha

Chapter 8 is devoted to the analysis of dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with long-range anisotropic tunable dipole–dipole interactions, using mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equations in one-, two-, and three-dimensional traps. Split-step Crank–Nicolson method, Gaussian variational approach, and Thomas–Fermi approximations are applied to study ground-state properties, nonlinear excitations, and stability across trap geometries.
