Abstract

The spontaneous spin polarization and bifurcation delay in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates coupled with Raman pulses are investigated. We find that the bifurcation and the spontaneous spin polarization depend not only on the system parameters, but also on the relative phase between two components. Through bifurcations, the system enters into the spontaneous spin polarization regime from the Rabi regime. We also find that bifurcation delay appears when the parameter is swept through the static bifurcation point. This bifurcation delay is responsible for metastability leading to hysteresis. The area enclosed in the hysteresis loop increases with the sweeping rate of the parameter.

The spontaneous spin polarization and bifurcation delay in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates coupled with laser or∕and radio-frequency pulses are investigated. We find that the bifurcation and the spontaneous spin polarization are determined by both physical parameters and relative phase between two condensates. Through bifurcations, the system enters into the spontaneous spin polarization regime from the Rabi regime. We also find that bifurcation delay appears when the parameter is swept through a static bifurcation point. This bifurcation delay is responsible for metastability leading to hysteresis.

Hysteresis effects in Bose-Einstein condensates

Andrea Sacchetti

Here, we consider damped two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with many-body interactions. We show that, when the external trapping potential has a double-well shape and when the nonlinear coupling factors are modulated in time, hysteresis effects may appear under some circumstances. Such hysteresis phenomena are a result of the joint contribution of the appearance of saddle node bifurcations and the damping effect.

Localization and spin dynamics of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices

Ai-Xia Zhang, Xiao-Wen Hu, Yan-Fang Jiang +4 more

We analytically and numerically discuss the dynamics of two pseudospin components Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in deep optical lattices. Rich localized phenomena, such as breathers, solitons, self-trapping, and diffusion, are revealed and strongly depend on the strength of the atomic interaction, SOC, Raman detuning, and the spin polarization (i.e., the initial population difference of atoms between the two pseudospin components of BECs). The critical conditions for the transition of localized states are derived analytically. Based on the critical conditions, the detailed dynamical phase diagram describing the different dynamical regimes is derived. When the Raman detuning satisfies a critical condition, localized states with a fixed initial spin polarization can be observed. When the critical condition is not satisfied, we use two quenching methods, i.e., suddenly and linearly quenching Raman detuning from the soliton or breather state, to discuss the spin dynamics, phase transition, and wave packet dynamics by numerical simulation. The sudden quenching results in a damped oscillation of spin polarization and transforms the system to a new polarized state. Interestingly, the linear quenching of Raman detuning induces a controllable phase transition from an unpolarized phase to an expected polarized phase, while the soliton or breather dynamics is maintained.

Universality of miscible–immiscible phase separation dynamics in two-component Bose–Einstein condensates

Xunda Jiang, Shuyuan Wu, Qinzhou Ye +1 more

We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics across the miscible–immiscible phase separation in a binary mixture of Bose–Einstein condensates. The excitation spectra reveal that the Landau critical velocity vanishes at the critical point, where the superfluidity spontaneously breaks down. We analytically extract the dynamical critical exponent z = 2 and static correlation length critical exponent v = 1/2 from the Landau critical velocity. Moreover, by simulating the real-time dynamics across the critical point, we find the average domain number and the average bifurcation delay show universal scaling laws with respect to the quench time. We then numerically extract the static correlation length critical exponent v = 1/2 and the dynamical critical exponent z = 2 according to Kibble–Zurek mechanism. The scaling exponents ( v = 1/2, z = 2) in the phase separation driven by quenching the atom–atom interaction are different from the ones ( v = 1/2, z = 1) in the phase separation driven by quenching the Rabi coupling strength (2009 Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 070401; 2011 Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 230402). Our study explores the connections between the spontaneous superfluidity breakdown and the spontaneous defect formation in the phase separation dynamics.

Critical Dynamics in an Array of Coupled Binary Bose-Einstein Condensates

Jun Xu, Shuyuan Wu, Xizhou Qin +4 more

Universal dynamics of spontaneous symmetry breaking is central to understanding the universal behavior of spontaneous defect formation in various system from the early universe, condensed-matter systems to ultracold atomic systems. We explore the universal real-time dynamics in an array of coupled binary atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, which undergo a spontaneous symmetry breaking from the symmetric Rabi oscillation to the broken-symmetry self-trapping. In addition to Goldstone modes, there exist gapped Higgs mode whose excitation gap vanishes at the critical point. In the slow passage through the critical point, we analytically find that the symmetry-breaking dynamics obeys the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. From the scalings of bifurcation delay and domain formation, we numerically extract two Kibble-Zurek exponents $b_{1}=\nu/(1+\nu z)$ and $b_{2}=1/(1+\nu z)$, which give the static correlation-length critical exponent $\nu$ and the dynamic critical exponent $z$. Our approach provides an efficient way to simultaneous determination of the critical exponents $\nu$ and $z$ for a continuous phase transition.
