Gauge invariance and electron spectral functions in underdoped cuprates

Abstract

The single particle spectral function for the normal state of underdoped high $T_c$ cuprates is studied within the slave particle framework. We find that the presence of a massless dynamical gauge field - a direct consequence of the quantum order - explains the broad, but not totally incoherent, line-shapes observed in experiments. The issue of the negative anomalous dimension of a recently proposed gauge invariant single particle amplitude is also considered. We show how the anomalous behavior of the single particle amplitude can be incorporated within the slave particle approach and, thus reinterpreted, lead to physical phenomenology.

Electron Spectral Function and Algebraic Spin Liquid for the Normal State of Underdoped High Tc Superconductors

Walter Rantner, Xiao-Gang Wen

We propose to describe the spin fluctuations in the normal state (spin-pseudogap phase) of underdoped high T(c) cuprates as a manifestation of an algebraic spin liquid. Within the slave boson implementation of spin-charge separation, the normal state is described by massless Dirac fermions, charged bosons, and a gauge field. The gauge interaction, as an exact marginal perturbation, drives the mean-field free-spinon fixed point to a new spin-quantum fixed point-the algebraic spin liquid. Luttinger-liquid-like line shapes for the electron spectral function are obtained in the normal state, and we show how a coherent quasiparticle peak appears as spin and charge recombine.

Momentum, doping, and temperature-dependent single-particle spectral functions in the normal state of the underdoped cuprates

Jin An, Chang-De Gong

On the basis of the ${t\ensuremath{-}t}^{{}^{\ensuremath{'}}}\ensuremath{-}J$ model, we investigate in the U(1) slave-boson framework the possibility of the d-wave spinon-pairing state as the pseudogap state in the underdoped cuprates. We calculate the single-particle spectral functions and density of states at different doping levels and different temperatures. We compare our calculations with the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies and tunneling experiments, and find they are consistent with each other.

U(1)×SU(2) Gauge Theory of Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

P. A. Marchetti, Zhao-Bin Su, Lu Yu

The U(1)×SU(2) Chern–Simons gauge theory is applied to study the 2D t–J model describing the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors. The U(1) field produces a flux phase for holons converting them into Dirac-like fermions, while the SU(2) field, due to the coupling to holons gives rise to a gap for spinons. An effective low-energy action involving holons, spinons and a self-generated U(1) gauge field is derived. The Fermi surface and electron spectral function obtained are consistent with photoemission experiments. The theory predicts a minimal gap proportional to doping concentration. It also explains anomalous transport properties.

A gauge invariant dressed holon and spinon description of the normal state of underdoped cuprates

Shiping Feng, Jihong Qin, Tianxing Ma

A partial charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory is developed to study the normal-state properties of the underdoped cuprates. In this approach, the physical electron is decoupled as a gauge invariant dressed holon and spinon, with the dressed holon behaving like a spinful fermion, and represents the charge degree of freedom together with the phase part of the spin degree of freedom, while the dressed spinon is a hard-core boson, and representing the amplitude part of the spin degree of freedom. The electron local constraint for single occupancy is satisfied. Within this approach, the charge and spin dynamics of the underdoped cuprates are studied based on the t-t'-J model. It is shown that the charge dynamics is mainly governed by the scattering from the dressed holons due to the dressed spinon fluctuation, while the scattering from the dressed spinons due to the dressed holon fluctuation dominates the spin dynamics.

Doped high- T c cuprate superconductors elucidated in the light of zeros and poles of the electronic Green’s function

志朗 酒井, Yukitoshi Motome, Masatoshi Imada

We study electronic structure of hole- and electron-doped Mott insulators in the two-dimensional Hubbard model to reach a unified picture for the normal state of cuprate high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors. By using a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory, we demonstrate that structure of coexisting zeros and poles of the single-particle Green's function holds the key to understand Mott physics in the underdoped region. We show evidence for the emergence of non-Fermi-liquid phase caused by the topological quantum phase transition of Fermi surface by analyzing low-energy charge dynamics. The spectra calculated in a wide range of energy and momentum reproduce various anomalous properties observed in experiments for the high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates. Our results reveal that the pseudogap in hole-doped cuprates has a $d$-wavelike structure only below the Fermi level while it retains non-$d$-wave structure with a fully opened gap above the Fermi energy even in the nodal direction due to a zero surface extending over the entire Brillouin zone. In addition to the non-$d$-wave pseudogap, the present comprehensive identifications of the spectral asymmetry as to the Fermi energy, the Fermi arc, and the back-bending behavior of the dispersion, waterfall, and low-energy kink, in agreement with the experimental anomalies of the cuprates, do not support that these originate from (the precursors of) symmetry breakings such as the preformed pairing and the $d$-density-wave fluctuations, but support that they are direct consequences of the proximity to the Mott insulator. Several possible experiments are further proposed to prove or disprove our zero mechanism.

Comment on electron spectral function and algebraic spin liquid for the normal state of underdoped high Tc superconductors (multiple letters

Walter Rantner, Xiao-Gang Wen, Dmitri V. Khveshchenko

In a recent Letter [1], Rantner and Wen made a theoretical prediction of the power-law behavior of the electron spectral function in the pseudogap phase of underdoped cuprates, reminiscent of that in the one-dimensional Luttinger liquid.
