Electron Spectral Function and Algebraic Spin Liquid for the Normal State of Underdoped High Tc Superconductors

Abstract

We propose to describe the spin fluctuations in the normal state (spin-pseudogap phase) of underdoped high T(c) cuprates as a manifestation of an algebraic spin liquid. Within the slave boson implementation of spin-charge separation, the normal state is described by massless Dirac fermions, charged bosons, and a gauge field. The gauge interaction, as an exact marginal perturbation, drives the mean-field free-spinon fixed point to a new spin-quantum fixed point-the algebraic spin liquid. Luttinger-liquid-like line shapes for the electron spectral function are obtained in the normal state, and we show how a coherent quasiparticle peak appears as spin and charge recombine.

Spin correlations in the algebraic spin liquid: Implications for high- T c superconductors

Walter Rantner, Xiao-Gang Wen

We propose that underdoped high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors are described by an algebraic spin liquid (ASL) at high energies, which undergoes a spin-charge recombination transition at low energies. The spin correlation in the ASL is calculated via its effective theory---a system of massless Dirac fermions coupled to a U(1) gauge field. We find that without fine-tuning any parameters the gauge interaction strongly enhances the staggered spin correlation even in the presence of a large single-particle pseudogap. This allows us to show that the ASL plus spin-charge recombination picture can explain many highly unusual properties of underdoped high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors.

Fermi-liquid behavior and spin-charge separation in underdoped cuprates: Gaussian fluctuations in the U(1) slave-boson mean-field theory of the t−J model

Ching-Kit Chan, Tai Kai Ng

The Gaussian fluctuations in slave-boson mean-field theory of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model are analyzed in this paper in the low-doping regime where the superconducting to normal (pseudogap phase) transition is driven by vanishing of bose-condensation amplitude. By eliminating the boson and constraint fields exactly in the linear-response regime, we show that the Gaussian theory describes an unconventional Fermi liquid superconductor where the superconducting to normal transition is a new type of phase transition characterized by a change of Landau parameter from ${F}_{1}>\ensuremath{-}1$ in the superconducting phase to ${F}_{1}=\ensuremath{-}1$ in the pseudo-gap phase, corresponding to a state with spin-charge separation. The consequences of this proposal are discussed.

A gauge invariant dressed holon and spinon description of the normal state of underdoped cuprates

Shiping Feng, Jihong Qin, Tianxing Ma

A partial charge-spin separation fermion-spin theory is developed to study the normal-state properties of the underdoped cuprates. In this approach, the physical electron is decoupled as a gauge invariant dressed holon and spinon, with the dressed holon behaving like a spinful fermion, and represents the charge degree of freedom together with the phase part of the spin degree of freedom, while the dressed spinon is a hard-core boson, and representing the amplitude part of the spin degree of freedom. The electron local constraint for single occupancy is satisfied. Within this approach, the charge and spin dynamics of the underdoped cuprates are studied based on the t-t'-J model. It is shown that the charge dynamics is mainly governed by the scattering from the dressed holons due to the dressed spinon fluctuation, while the scattering from the dressed spinons due to the dressed holon fluctuation dominates the spin dynamics.
