Abstract

We study the collective excitations of a neutral atomic Bose-Einstein condensate with gravitylike $1/r$ interatomic attraction induced by an electromagnetic wave. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive an analytical spectrum for monopole and quadrupole mode frequencies of a gravitylike self-bound Bose condensed state at zero temperature. We also analyze the excitation frequencies of the Thomas-Fermi--gravity (TF-G) and gravity (G) regimes. Our result agrees excellently with that of Giovanazzi et al. [Europhysics Lett., 56, 1 (2001)], which is obtained within the sum-rule approach. We also consider the vortex state. We estimate the superfluid coherence length and the critical angular frequencies to create a vortex around the z axis. We find that the TF-G regime can exhibit the superfluid properties more prominently than the G regime. We find that the monopole mode frequency of the condensate decreases due to the presence of a vortex.

Collective excitations of a "gravitationally" self-bound Bose gas

S. Giovanazzi, Gershon Kurizki, I. E. Mazets +1 more

We investigate the collective excitations of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the self-binding regime produced by electromagnetically induced "gravity" (1/ r attraction). Analytical expressions for the frequencies of the monopole and quadrupole modes are obtained at zero temperature, using the sum-rule approach, and compared with the exact results available in the Thomas-Fermi limit. The low-energy dynamics of such condensates is shown to be dominated by the effective "plasma" frequency. An analog of the Jeans gravitational instability is analyzed.

Ground-state properties, vortices, and collective excitations in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with gravitylike interatomic attraction

Ahmet Keleş, S. Sevinçli, B. Tanatar

We study the ground-state properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate with short-range repulsion and gravitylike $1/r$ interatomic attraction in two-dimensions (2D). Using the variational approach we obtain the ground-state energy and analyze the stability of the condensate for a range of interaction strengths in 2D. We also determine the collective excitations at zero temperature using the time-dependent variational method. We analyze the properties of the Thomas-Fermi-gravity and gravity regimes, and we examine the vortex states, finding the coherence length and monopole mode frequency for these regimes. Our results are compared and contrasted with those in 3D condensates.

Collective excitation frequencies of a Bose - Einstein condensate with electromagnetically induced $1/r$ attraction

I. E. Mazets

We investigate collective excitations of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a recently discovered regime [D.O'Dell et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5687 (2000)] of a balance between electromagnetically induced $1/r$ attraction and a short-range interatomic repulsion. The corresponding frequencies for monopole, dipole, and quadrupole modes are calculated numerically in the zero temperature case.

Quantized Vortices and Collective Oscillations of a Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate

Francesca Zambelli, S. Stringari

Using a sum rule approach we calculate the frequency shifts of the quadrupole oscillations of a harmonically trapped Bose gas due to the presence of a quantized vortex. Analytic results are obtained for positive scattering lengths and large $N$ where the shift relative to excitations of opposite angular momentum is found to be proportional to the quantum circulation of the vortex and to decrease as ${N}^{\ensuremath{-}2/5}$. Results are also given for smaller values of $N$ covering the transition between the ideal gas and the Thomas-Fermi limit. The splitting of the collective frequencies in toroidal configurations is also discussed.

Coupling collective modes in a trapped superfluid

E. R. F. Ramos, F. E. A. dos Santos, M. A. Caracanhas +1 more

We consider a superfluid cloud composed of a Bose-Einstein condensate oscillating within a magnetic trap (dipole mode) where, due to the existence of a Feshbach resonance, an effective periodic time-dependent modulation in the scattering length is introduced. Under this condition, collective excitations such as the quadrupole mode can take place. We approach this problem by employing both the Gaussian and the Thomas-Fermi variational Ans\"atze. The resulting dynamic equations are analyzed by considering both linear approximations and numerical solutions, where we observe coupling between dipole and quadrupole modes. Aspects of this coupling related to the variation of the dipole oscillation amplitude are analyzed. This may be a relevant effect in situations where oscillation in a magnetic field in the presence of a bias field $B$ takes place, and should be considered in the interpretation of experimental results.

Collective Excitations and Critical Phenomena in Interacting Bose–Einstein Condensates

Dr. Narendra Kumar Ravi Nath Choudhry

Bose–Einstein condensation represents a quintessential manifestation of quantum mechanics at macroscopic scales, where a dilute gas of bosonic atoms undergoes a phase transition to form a coherent matter wave. This study presents a comprehensive theoretical investigation of collective excitations and critical phenomena in interacting Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). Beginning with the Gross–Pitaevskii equation , we develop the Bogoliubov theory of excitations yielding the spectrum , where is the free-particle energy and characterizes contact interactions. The spectrum reveals phonon behavior at low momenta with sound velocity , transitioning to free-particle dispersion at momenta exceeding the inverse healing length . Collective modes in harmonically trapped condensates are analyzed in the Thomas–Fermi regime, yielding breathing mode frequency and quadrupole frequency . Damping mechanisms including Landau damping ( ) and Beliaev damping ( ) are characterized. The Lee–Huang–Yang correction extends the equation of state beyond mean field. Critical phenomena near are analyzed within the 3D XY universality class, with critical exponents , , and the interaction-induced shift with . All predictions show excellent agreement with experimental measurements on ultracold atomic gases.
