Abstract

We study the ground-state properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate with short-range repulsion and gravitylike $1/r$ interatomic attraction in two-dimensions (2D). Using the variational approach we obtain the ground-state energy and analyze the stability of the condensate for a range of interaction strengths in 2D. We also determine the collective excitations at zero temperature using the time-dependent variational method. We analyze the properties of the Thomas-Fermi-gravity and gravity regimes, and we examine the vortex states, finding the coherence length and monopole mode frequency for these regimes. Our results are compared and contrasted with those in 3D condensates.

Collective excitation frequencies and vortices of a Bose-Einstein condensed state with gravitylike interatomic attraction

Tarun Kanti Ghosh

We study the collective excitations of a neutral atomic Bose-Einstein condensate with gravitylike $1/r$ interatomic attraction induced by an electromagnetic wave. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive an analytical spectrum for monopole and quadrupole mode frequencies of a gravitylike self-bound Bose condensed state at zero temperature. We also analyze the excitation frequencies of the Thomas-Fermi--gravity (TF-G) and gravity (G) regimes. Our result agrees excellently with that of Giovanazzi et al. [Europhysics Lett., 56, 1 (2001)], which is obtained within the sum-rule approach. We also consider the vortex state. We estimate the superfluid coherence length and the critical angular frequencies to create a vortex around the z axis. We find that the TF-G regime can exhibit the superfluid properties more prominently than the G regime. We find that the monopole mode frequency of the condensate decreases due to the presence of a vortex.

Variational Monte Carlo analysis of Bose–Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional trap

Zheng Rong-Jie, Jing Jin, Yi Ping Tang

The ground-state properties of a system with a small number of interacting bosons over a wide range of densities are investigated. The system is confined in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic trap, where the interaction between bosons is treated as a hard-core potential. By using variational Monte Carlo method, we diagonalize the one-body density matrix of the system to obtain the ground-state energy, condensate wavefunction and the condensate fraction. We find that in the dilute limit the depletion of central condensate in the 2D system is larger than in a 3D system for the same interaction strength; however as the density increases, the depletion at the centre of 2D trap will be equal to or even lower than that at the centre of 3D trap, which is in agreement with the anticipated in Thomas–Fermi approximation. In addition, in the 2D system the total condensate depletion is still larger than in a 3D system for the same scattering length.

Ground-state properties of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates: Extension of the Thomas-Fermi approximation

Antonio Muñoz Mateo, V. Delgado

We derive general approximate formulas that provide with remarkable accuracy the ground-state properties of any mean-field scalar Bose-Einstein condensate with short-range repulsive interatomic interactions, confined in arbitrary cylindrically symmetric harmonic traps. Our formulation is even applicable for condensates containing a multiply quantized axisymmetric vortex. We have checked the validity of our formulas by numerically solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Collective excitations of a "gravitationally" self-bound Bose gas

S. Giovanazzi, Gershon Kurizki, I. E. Mazets +1 more

We investigate the collective excitations of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the self-binding regime produced by electromagnetically induced "gravity" (1/ r attraction). Analytical expressions for the frequencies of the monopole and quadrupole modes are obtained at zero temperature, using the sum-rule approach, and compared with the exact results available in the Thomas-Fermi limit. The low-energy dynamics of such condensates is shown to be dominated by the effective "plasma" frequency. An analog of the Jeans gravitational instability is analyzed.

Ground State and Collective Modes of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Newtonian and MOND-inspired gravitational potentials

Ning Liu

We analytically and numerically study the ground state and collective dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in two traps: a Newtonian potential and a logarithmic potential inspired by Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). In the ground state, the MOND potential supports bound states only in the deep-MOND regime, where the condensate becomes significantly larger than its Newtonian counterpart. The size increases with repulsive coupling parameter $β$ in both potentials. A clear scaling law of the size with $β^{1/3}$ emerges in the MOND case and is confirmed numerically over a wide parameter range, while for the Newtonian potential no simple scaling law exists as the Thomas-Fermi approximation ceases to be valid. For the dynamics, we derive and solve equations for the monopole collective mode. The larger MOND-bound condensate oscillates at a lower frequency, which scales as $β^{-1/3}$ in the strong-interaction limit. These scaling laws provide insights for quantum-simulation experiments aiming to probe modified-gravity scenarios with cold atoms.

Effects of three-body interaction on collective excitation and stability of Bose–Einstein condensate

Peng Ping, Guan-Qiang Li

This paper investigates the collective excitation and stability of low-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates with two- and three-body interactions by the variational analysis of the time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii–Ginzburg equation. The spectrum of the low-energy excitation and the effective potential for the width of the condensate are obtained. The results show that: (i) the repulsive two-body interaction among atoms makes the frequency red-shifted for the internal excitation and the repulsive or attractive three-body interaction always makes it blue-shifted; (ii) the region for the existence of the stable bound states is obtained by identifying the critical value of the two- and three-body interactions.
