Abstract

We consider a superfluid cloud composed of a Bose-Einstein condensate oscillating within a magnetic trap (dipole mode) where, due to the existence of a Feshbach resonance, an effective periodic time-dependent modulation in the scattering length is introduced. Under this condition, collective excitations such as the quadrupole mode can take place. We approach this problem by employing both the Gaussian and the Thomas-Fermi variational Ans\"atze. The resulting dynamic equations are analyzed by considering both linear approximations and numerical solutions, where we observe coupling between dipole and quadrupole modes. Aspects of this coupling related to the variation of the dipole oscillation amplitude are analyzed. This may be a relevant effect in situations where oscillation in a magnetic field in the presence of a bias field $B$ takes place, and should be considered in the interpretation of experimental results.

Collective oscillation modes of a superfluid Bose–Fermi mixture

Wen Wen, Ying Wang, Jianyong Wang

Abstract In this work, we present a theoretical study for the collective oscillation modes, i.e. quadrupole, radial and axial mode, of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in harmonic trapping potentials with cylindrical symmetry of experimental interest. To this end, we start from the coupled superfluid hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures and use the scaling theory that has been developed for a coupled system. The collective oscillation modes of Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures are found to crucially depend on the overlap integrals of the spatial derivations of density profiles of the Bose and Fermi superfluids at equilibrium. We not only present the explicit expressions for the overlap density integrals, as well as the frequencies of the collective modes provided that the effective Bose–Fermi coupling is weak, but also test the valid regimes of the analytical approximations by numerical calculations in realistic experimental conditions. In the presence of a repulsive Bose–Fermi interaction, we find that the frequencies of the three collective modes of the Bose and Fermi superfluids are all upshifted, and the change speeds of the frequency shifts in the BCS–BEC crossover can characterize the different groundstate phases of the Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures for different trap geometries.

Quadrupole and scissors modes and nonlinear mode coupling in trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Kenichi Kasamatsu, Makoto Tsubota, Masahito Ueda

We theoretically investigate quadrupolar collective excitations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and their nonlinear dynamics associated with harmonic generation and mode coupling. Under the Thomas-Fermi approximation and the quadratic polynomial ansatz for density fluctuations, the linear analysis of the superfluid hydrodynamic equations predicts excitation frequencies of three normal modes constituted from monopole and quadrupole oscillations, and those of three scissors modes. These six modes are bifurcated into in-phase and out-of-phase modes by the intercomponent interaction, yielding the nonlinear dynamics that are absent in a single-component condensate. We obtain analytically the resonance conditions for the second-harmonic generation in terms of the trap aspect ratio and the strength of intercomponent interaction. The numerical simulation of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations vindicates the validity of the analytical results and reveals the dynamics of the second-harmonic generation and nonlinear mode coupling that lead to nonlinear oscillations of the condensate with damping and recurrence reminiscent of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem.

Breakdown of the Kohn theorem near a Feshbach resonance in a magnetic trap

Hamid Al-Jibbouri, Axel Pelster

We study the collective excitation frequencies of a harmonically trapped ${}^{85}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. To this end, we solve the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation by using a Gaussian variational approach and obtain the coupled set of ordinary differential equations for the widths and the center of mass of the condensate. A linearization shows that the dipole-mode frequency decreases when the bias magnetic field approaches the Feshbach resonance, so the Kohn theorem is violated.

Coupling vortex dynamics with collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

R. P. Teles, Vanderlei Salvador Bagnato, F. E. A. dos Santos

Here we analyze the collective excitations as well as the expansion of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex line at its center. To this end, we propose a variational method where the variational parameters have to be carefully chosen in order to produce reliable results. Our variational calculations agree with numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system considered here turns out to exhibit four collective modes of which only three can be observed at a time depending on the trap anisotropy. We also demonstrate that these collective modes can be excited using well established experimental methods such as modulation of the $s$-wave scattering length.

Oscillatory interaction in a Bose-Einstein condensate: collective and topological excitations

E. R. F. Ramos

In this work, we theoretically analyze the behavior of a Bose-Einstein condensate when it is submitted to oscillatory interactions. For that, a homogeneous magnetic field is applied, tuned near a Feshbach resonance, and then it is set to oscillate in time. This variation of the magnetic field causes a scattering length oscillation, which oscillates to interatomic interaction. Thus, we study collective and topological excitations due this oscillation in the interaction. In addition, we have seen a coupling between collective modes as well a dynamical phase transition associated to topological excitation
