Collective oscillations of a trapped superfluid Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

Abstract

The frequencies of the collective oscillations of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas interacting with large scattering lengths are calculated at zero temperature using hydrodynamic theory. Different regimes are considered, including the molecular Bose-Einstein condensate and the unitarity limit for collisions. We show that the frequency of the radial compressional mode in an elongated trap exhibits a pronounced non-monotonous dependence on the scattering length, reflecting the role of the interactions in the equation of state.

Equation of State and Collective Frequencies of a Trapped Fermi Gas Along the BEC-Unitarity Crossover

We show that the study of the collective oscillations in a harmonic trap provides a very sensitive test of the equation of state of a Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance. Using a scaling approach, whose high accuracy is proven by comparison with exact hydrodynamic solutions, the frequencies of the lowest compressional modes are calculated at T=0 in terms of a dimensionless parameter characterizing the equation of state. The predictions for the collective frequencies, obtained from the equations of state of mean-field BCS theory and of recent Monte Carlo calculations, are discussed in detail.

Collective Modes in a Unitary Fermi Gas across the Superfluid Phase Transition

Meng Khoon Tey, Leonid A. Sidorenkov, Edmundo R. Sánchez Guajardo +6 more

We provide a joint theoretical and experimental investigation of the temperature dependence of the collective oscillations of first sound nature exhibited by a highly elongated harmonically trapped Fermi gas at unitarity, including the region below the critical temperature for superfluidity. Differently from the lowest axial breathing mode, the hydrodynamic frequencies of the higher-nodal excitations show a temperature dependence, which is calculated starting from Landau two-fluid theory and using the available experimental knowledge of the equation of state. The experimental results agree with high accuracy with the predictions of theory and provide the first evidence for the temperature dependence of the collective frequencies near the superfluid phase transition.

Momentum distribution of a trapped Fermi gas with large scattering length

Luciano Viverit, S. Giorgini, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

Using a scattering length parametrization of the crossover from a BCS state to a Bose-Einstein condensate as well as the local density approximation for the density profile, we calculate the momentum distribution of a harmonically trapped atomic Fermi gas at zero temperature. Various interaction regimes are considered, including the BCS phase, the unitarity limit, and the molecular regime. We show that the relevant parameter which characterizes the crossover is given by the dimensionless combination ${N}^{1/6}{a/a}_{\mathrm{ho}},$ where N is the number of atoms, a is the scattering length, and ${a}_{\mathrm{ho}}$ is the oscillator length. The width of the momentum distribution is shown to depend in a crucial way on the value and sign of this parameter. Our predictions can be relevant for experiments on ultracold atomic Fermi gases near a Feshbach resonance.

Evidence for Superfluidity in a Resonantly Interacting Fermi Gas

Joseph M. Kinast, S. L. Hemmer, Michael E. Gehm +2 more

We observe collective oscillations of a trapped, degenerate Fermi gas of 6Li atoms at a magnetic field just above a Feshbach resonance, where the two-body physics does not support a bound state. The gas exhibits a radial breathing mode at a frequency of 2837(05) Hz, in excellent agreement with the frequency of nu(H) identical with sqrt[10nu(x)nu(y)/3]=2830(20) Hz predicted for a hydrodynamic Fermi gas with unitarity-limited interactions. The measured damping times and frequencies are inconsistent with predictions for both the collisionless mean field regime and for collisional hydrodynamics. These observations provide the first evidence for superfluid hydrodynamics in a resonantly interacting Fermi gas.

Collective Oscillations of a Trapped Fermi Gas near the Unitary Limit

Aurel Bulgac, G. F. Bertsch

We calculate the oscillation frequencies of trapped Fermi condensate with particular emphasis on the equation of state of the interacting Fermi system. We confirm Stringari's finding that the frequencies are independent of the interaction in the unitary limit, and we extend the theory away from that limit, where the interaction does affect the frequencies of the compressional modes only.

Collective oscillations of a trapped quantum gas in low dimensions

Giulia De Rosi, S. Stringari

We present a comprehensive study of the discretized modes of an atomic gas in different conditions of confinement. Starting from the equations of hydrodynamics we derive a closed equation for the velocity field, depending on the adiabatic and isothermal compressibilities and applicable to different dimensions and quantum statistics. At zero temperature the equation reproduces the irrotational behavior of superfluid hydrodynamics. It is also applicable above the critical temperature in the collisional regime, where the appearance of rotational components in the velocity field is caused by the external potential. In the presence of harmonic trapping, a general class of analytic solutions is obtained for systems exhibiting a polytropic equation of state, characterized by a power law isoentropic dependence of the pressure on the density. Explicit results for the compressional modes are derived for both Bose and Fermi gases in the pancake and cigar as well as in the deep two- and one-dimensional regimes. Our results agree with the analytical predictions available in the literature in some limiting cases. They are particularly relevant in one-dimensional configurations, where the study of the collective frequencies could provide a unique test of the achievement of the collisional regime at finite temperature.
