Abstract

The interplay between quarter-filled and half-filled umklapp scattering has been examined by applying the renormalization group method to a one-dimensional quarter-filled electron system with dimerization, on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. The phase diagram on the U-V plane is obtained at absolute zero temperature where the Mott insulator (the charge ordered insulator) is found for smaller (larger) V. By choosing the moderate parameter in the region of Mott insulator, it is shown that the resistivity exhibits a crossover from behavior of quarter-filling to that of half-filling with decreasing temperature.

Correlation Effects in a One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Electron System with Repulsive Interactions

Hideo Yoshioka, Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Yoshikazu Suzumura

A one-dimensional electron system at quarter-filling has been examined by applying the renormalization group method to a bosonized model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. By evaluating both normal scattering and Umklapp scattering perturbatively, we obtain a phase diagram in which a metallic state with a 2k_F spin density wave (k_F is the Fermi wave number) moves into an insulating state with charge disproportionation of a 4k_F charge density wave with an increase in both U and V. The effect of the next-nearest-neighbor repulsion is also discussed.

Interplay of Lattice Dimerization and Charge Ordering in One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Electron Systems

Muneo Sugiura, Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Yoshikazu Suzumura

The effect of charge ordering on lattice dimerization has been investigated in the one-dimensional extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling. We estimate the strength of the lattice dimerization by applying the bosonization method and the perturbative renormalization-group method. In the ground state, it is shown that a first-order phase transition takes place between the dimerized insulator and the charge-ordered insulator. The lattice dimerization disappears in the charge-ordered state, while the lattice dimerization is appreciably suppressed even in the dimerized insulating state due to charge fluctuations. The phase diagram at finite temperature is also discussed.

Electronic States in Half-Filled Correlated System with Alternating Potential

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Yoshikazu Suzumura

The effect of an alternating potential on a one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with repulsive interaction has been examined by applying the renormalization group method to the bosonized Hamiltonian. The electronic state, which is determined by the competition between alternating potential and umklapp scattering, is calculated where the relevance and the irrelevance of the alternating potential leads to the band insulator and the Mott insulator respectively. The excitation gaps for charge and spin fluctuations are calculated for both states.

Effects of Next-Nearest-Neighbor Repulsion on One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Electron Systems

Hideo Yoshioka, Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Yoshikazu Suzumura

We examine effects of the next-nearest-neighbor repulsion on electronic states of a one-dimensional interacting electron system which consists of quarter-filled band and interactions of on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsion. We derive the effective Hamiltonian for the electrons around wave number $\pm \kf$ ($\kf$: Fermi wave number) and apply the renormalization group method to the bosonized Hamiltonian. It is shown that the next-nearest-neighbor repulsion makes $4\kf$-charge ordering unstable and suppresses the spin fluctuation. Further the excitation gaps and spin susceptibility are also evaluated.

Umklapp process and resistivity in one-dimensional fermion systems

Thierry Giamarchi

The influence of umklapp scattering on the resistivity of an interacting-one-dimensional-fermion system (Luttinger liquid) is studied. By using a renormalization-group calculation and a memory-function approximation for the conductivity, it is possible to obtain its frequency and temperature dependence at arbitrary filling. At high temperature the conductivity behaves as a power law of the temperature with an exponent depending on the interactions. Away from half filling there is a crossover between this behavior and an exponential increase of the conductivity. At half filling, the low-temperature conductivity behaves as ${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}/\mathit{T}}$, where \ensuremath{\Delta} is the gap in the charge spectrum. It is argued that to get such behavior other scattering processes or phase-breaking processes are needed since in the presence of only electron-electron scattering the conductivity should, strictly speaking, be infinite at every finite temperature, even at half filling. Finally some results on the exponents of correlation functions and on the weight of the Drude peak obtained previously for the Hubbard model are shown to be generic features of any Luttinger liquid.

Transition from band insulator to Mott insulator in one dimension: Critical behavior and phase diagram

Jizhong Lou, Shaojin Qin, Tao Xiang +3 more

We report a systematic study of the transition from a band insulator (BI) to a Mott insulator (MI) in a one-dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling with an on-site Coulomb interaction U and an alternating periodic site potential V. We employ both the zero-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method to determine the gap and critical behavior of the system and the finite-temperature transfer matrix renormalization group method to evaluate the thermodynamic properties. We find two critical points at ${U=U}_{c}$ and ${U=U}_{s}$ that separate the BI and MI phases for a given V. A charge-neutral spin-singlet exciton band develops in the BI phase $(U<{U}_{c})$ and drops below the band gap when U exceeds a special point ${U}_{e}.$ The exciton gap closes at the first critical point ${U}_{c}$ while the charge and spin gaps persist and coincide between ${U}_{c}<U<{U}_{s}$ where the system is dimerized. Both the charge and spin gaps collapse at ${U=U}_{s}$ when the transition to the MI phase occurs. In the MI phase $(U>{U}_{s})$ the charge gap increases almost linearly with U while the spin gap remains zero. These findings clarify earlier published results on the same model, and offer insights into several important issues regarding an appropriate scaling analysis of DMRG data and a full physical picture of the delicate nature of the phase transitions driven by electron correlation. The present work provides a comprehensive understanding for the critical behavior and phase diagram for the transition from BI to MI in one-dimensional correlated electron systems with a periodic alternating site potential.
