Interplay of Lattice Dimerization and Charge Ordering in One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Electron Systems

Abstract

The effect of charge ordering on lattice dimerization has been investigated in the one-dimensional extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling. We estimate the strength of the lattice dimerization by applying the bosonization method and the perturbative renormalization-group method. In the ground state, it is shown that a first-order phase transition takes place between the dimerized insulator and the charge-ordered insulator. The lattice dimerization disappears in the charge-ordered state, while the lattice dimerization is appreciably suppressed even in the dimerized insulating state due to charge fluctuations. The phase diagram at finite temperature is also discussed.

Crossover from Quarter-Filling to Half-Filling in a One-Dimensional Electron System with a Dimerized and Quarter-Filled Band

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Hideo Yoshioka, Yoshikazu Suzumura

The interplay between quarter-filled and half-filled umklapp scattering has been examined by applying the renormalization group method to a one-dimensional quarter-filled electron system with dimerization, on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. The phase diagram on the U-V plane is obtained at absolute zero temperature where the Mott insulator (the charge ordered insulator) is found for smaller (larger) V. By choosing the moderate parameter in the region of Mott insulator, it is shown that the resistivity exhibits a crossover from behavior of quarter-filling to that of half-filling with decreasing temperature.

Dimensionality Effects on the Charge Gap in the Dimerized Hubbard Model at Quarter Filling: the Density-Matrix and Perturbative Renormalization-Group Approaches

Kenji Yonemitsu, Jun‐ichiro Kishine

We study dimensionality effects on the charge gap in the dimerized Hubbard model at quarter filling, with two approaches. First, we examine three chains coupled via the interchain one-particle hopping integral t b , by the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. Next, we consider the d =1+ε dimensional model, using the perturbative renormalization-group (PRG) method. The dimensionality is controlled through t b and ε, respectively. Both approaches lead to the conclusion that, for a finite dimerization ratio, the charge gap decreases as the dimensionality increases.

From frustrated insulators to correlated anisotropic metals: charge-ordering and quantum criticality in coupled chain systems

Siddhartha Lal, M. S. Laad

By following the ideas of Emery and Noguera, a recent study revealed the dynamics of the charge sector of a one-dimensional quarter-filled electronic system with extended Hubbard interactions to be that of an effective pseudospin transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) in the strong-coupling limit. With the twin motivations of studying the co-existing charge and spin order found in strongly correlated chain systems and the effects of interchain couplings, we investigate the phase diagram of coupled effective (TFIM) systems. A bosonization and renormalization group (RG) analysis for a two-leg TFIM ladder yields a rich phase diagram showing Wigner/Peierls charge order and Néel/dimer spin order. In a broad parameter regime, the orbital antiferromagnetic phase is found to be stable. An intermediate gapless phase of finite width is found to lie in between two charge-ordered gapped phases. Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions are found to lead from the gapless phase to either of the charge-ordered phases. A detailed analysis is also carried out for the dimensional crossover physics when many such pseudospin systems are coupled to one another. Importantly, the analysis reveals the key role of critical quantum fluctuations in driving the strong dispersion in the transverse directions, as well as a T = 0 deconfinement transition. Our work is potentially relevant for a unified description of a class of strongly correlated, quarter-filled chain and ladder systems.

Metal-insulator transition in the one-dimensional Holstein model at half filling

Eric Jeckelmann, Chunli Zhang, Steven R. White

We study the one-dimensional Holstein model with spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ electrons at half filling. Ground-state properties are calculated for long chains with great accuracy using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit. We show that for small electron-phonon coupling or large phonon frequency, the insulating Peierls ground state predicted by mean-field theory is destroyed by quantum lattice fluctuations and that the system remains in a metallic phase with a nondegenerate ground state and power-law electronic and phononic correlations. When the electron-phonon coupling becomes large or the phonon frequency small, the system undergoes a transition to an insulating Peierls phase with a twofold degenerate ground state, long-range charge-density-wave order, a dimerized lattice structure, and a gap in the electronic excitation spectrum.

Phase diagram of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder

Matthias Vojta C, A. Hübsch, R. M. Noack

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the quarter-filled Hubbard ladder with nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V$ using the density matrix renormalization-group technique. The ground state is homogeneous at small $V,$ a ``checkerboard'' charge-ordered insulator at large $V$ and not too small on site Coulomb repulsion U, and is phase separated for moderate or large $V$ and small U. The zero-temperature transition between the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phase is found to be second order. In both the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phases the existence of a spin gap mainly depends on the ratio of interchain to intrachain hopping. In the second part of the paper we construct an effective Hamiltonian for the spin degrees of freedom in the strong-coupling, charge-ordered regime that maps the system onto a frustrated spin chain. The opening of a spin gap is thus connected with spontaneous dimerization.

Coupled dimer and bond-order-wave order in the quarter-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

Yixuan Huang, D. N. Sheng, C. S. Ting

Motivated by experiments on the organic compound ${(\text{Per})}_{2}[\text{Pt}{(\text{mnt})}_{2}]$, we study the ground state of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. We show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak-coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter ${J}_{c}$, with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experimental findings of the simultaneous Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions at low temperatures, which provides a theoretical understanding of such a phase transition. We also show that the localized spins in this insulating state have quasi-long-ranged spin correlations with collinear configurations, which resemble the classical dimer order in the absence of a magnetic order.
