Ising model on nonorientable surfaces: Exact solution for the Möbius strip and the Klein bottle

Abstract

Closed-form expressions are obtained for the partition function of the Ising model on an MxN simple-quartic lattice embedded on a Möbius strip and a Klein bottle. The solutions all lead to the same bulk free energy, but for finite M and N the expressions are different depending on whether the strip width M is odd or even. Finite-size corrections at criticality are analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. Our results are consistent with the conformal field prediction of a central charge c=1/2, provided that the twisted Möbius boundary condition is regarded as a free or fixed boundary.

Finite-Size Scaling for the Ising Model on the Möbius Strip and the Klein Bottle

Kazuhisa Kaneda, Yutaka Okabe

We study the finite-size scaling properties of the Ising model on the Möbius strip and the Klein bottle. The results are compared with those of the Ising model under different boundary conditions, that is, the free, cylindrical, and toroidal boundary conditions. The difference in the magnetization distribution function p(m) for various boundary conditions is discussed in terms of the number of the percolating clusters and the cluster size. We also find interesting aspect-ratio dependence of the value of the Binder parameter at T = T(c) for various boundary conditions. We discuss the relation to the finite-size correction calculations for the dimer statistics.

Continuous-time quantum walks on nonorientable surfaces: analytical solutions for Möbius strips and Klein bottles

Pengcheng Li, Zhongzhi Zhang

In this paper, we present an extensive analytical study of continuous-time quantum walks (CTQWs) occurring on two-dimensional lattices under various boundary conditions, focusing on the M × N lattice wrapped on Mobius strips and Klein bottles, which are featured by the twisted boundary conditions. We find that the eigenvalue spectra and transport efficiency (both quantum mechanical and classical) for the two structures show comparable results with those for other well-known two-dimensional lattices, including rectangles, cylinders and tori. We also demonstrate that the behaviors of CTQWs depend on the initial node of the excitation and the network size, both on short and long timescales. In addition, we discover the asymmetric behaviors of limiting probabilities for Mobius strips and Klein bottles, which are quite different from each other and are also compared to those discovered in other two-dimensional networks. Our work provides a comprehensive understanding of recent results about CTQWs on two-dimensional lattices, and sheds light on quantum dynamics on lattices, especially those with different boundary conditions.

Exact finite-size corrections for the square-lattice Ising model with Brascamp-Kunz boundary conditions

N. Sh. Izmailian, Koryun B. Oganesyan, Chin‐Kun Hu

Finite-size scaling, finite-size corrections, and boundary effects for critical systems have attracted much attention in recent years. Here we derive exact finite-size corrections for the free energy F and the specific heat C of the critical ferromagnetic Ising model on the Mu x 2 Nu square lattice with Brascamp-Kunz (BK) boundary conditions [J. Math. Phys. 15, 66 (1974)] and compare such results with those under toroidal boundary conditions. When the ratio xi/2=(Mu+1)/2 Nu is smaller than 1 the behaviors of finite-size corrections for C are quite different for BK and toroidal boundary conditions; when ln(xi/2) is larger than 3, finite-size corrections for C in two boundary conditions approach the same values. In the limit Nu-->infinity we obtain the expansion of the free energy for infinitely long strip with BK boundary conditions. Our results are consistent with the conformal field theory prediction for the mixed boundary conditions by Cardy [Nucl. Phys. B 275, 200 (1986)] although the definitions of boundary conditions in two cases are different in one side of the long strip.

Exact solution of the critical Ising model with special toroidal boundary conditions

Armen R. Poghosyan, N. Sh. Izmailian, Ralph Kenna B

The Ising model in two dimensions with special toroidal boundary conditions is analyzed. These boundary conditions, which we call duality-twisted boundary conditions, may be interpreted as inserting a specific defect line ("seam") in the system, along noncontractible circles of the cylinder, before closing it into a torus. We derive exact expressions for the eigenvalues of a transfer matrix for the critical ferromagnetic Ising model on the M×N square lattice wrapped on the torus with a specific defect line. As a result we have obtained analytically the partition function for the Ising model with such boundary conditions. In the case of infinitely long cylinders of circumference L with duality-twisted boundary conditions we obtain the asymptotic expansion of the free energy and the inverse correlation lengths. We find that the ratio of subdominant finite-size correction terms in the asymptotic expansion of the free energy and the inverse correlation lengths should be universal. We verify such universal behavior in the framework of a perturbating conformal approach by calculating the universal structure constant C_{n1n} for descendent states generated by the operator product expansion of the primary fields. For such states the calculations of an universal structure constants is a difficult task, since it involves knowledge of the four-point correlation function, which in general is not fixed by conformal invariance except for some particular cases, including the Ising model.

Bulk, surface, and interface properties of the Ising model and conformal invariance

Theodore W. Burkhardt, Ihnsouk Guim

By solving partial differential equations for the correlation functions implied by conformal invariance, we obtain exact results at the critical point for the bulk six-point function 〈\ensuremath{\sigma}(1)...\ensuremath{\sigma}(6)〉 of the two-dimensional Ising model and the three-point functions 〈\ensuremath{\sigma}(1)\ensuremath{\sigma}(2)\ensuremath{\sigma}(3)〉, 〈\ensuremath{\sigma}(1)\ensuremath{\mu}(2)\ensuremath{\mu}(3)〉 of the semi-infinite two-dimensional Ising model with fixed boundary spins. Here \ensuremath{\sigma} and \ensuremath{\mu} denote order (spin) and disorder variables, respectively. We also derive the explicit form of the magnetization profile at the bulk critical temperature in an Ising strip of infinite length and finite width, with spin-up boundary conditions on one edge and spin-down boundary conditions on the other.

Bounded and inhomogeneous Ising models. II. Specific-heat scaling function for a strip

Helen Au-Yang, Michael Ellis Fisher

The specific heat, energy, and free energy of an infinitely long, square-lattice ferromagnetic Ising strip consisting of $n$ parallel layers with free boundary conditions and a surface magnetic field ${H}_{1}={k}_{B}{\mathrm{Th}}_{1}$ imposed on the last layer, is analyzed for large $n$ in the light of finite-size scaling theory. It is shown rigorously that the free energy (and, similarly, the energy and specific heat) can be written asymptotically in the scaling form $\ensuremath{\Delta}f(n,t,{h}_{1})\ensuremath{\approx}{n}^{\ensuremath{-}2}(\mathrm{ln}n){W}_{1}(nt,{n}^{\frac{1}{2}}{h}_{1})+{n}^{\ensuremath{-}2}{W}_{2}(nt,{n}^{\frac{1}{2}}{h}_{1})$, where $t=\frac{(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c})}{{T}_{c}}$. The scaling functions ${W}_{i}(x,y)$ are computed in explicit closed form and shown to verify all the analyticity and asymptotic requirements anticipated by scaling theory. Furthermore, in the limit $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ at fixed $t\ensuremath{\ne}0$, the bulk and surface contributions to the thermodynamic properties are found to account for all except a correction of order ${e}^{\frac{\mathrm{pna}}{\ensuremath{\xi}(T)}}$, where $a$ is the lattice spacing and $\ensuremath{\xi}(T)$ is the bulk correlation length; the value of the small rational constant $p$ is interpreted in terms of interference effects between the two opposite boundaries (or "surfaces").
