Finite-size scaling, finite-size corrections, and boundary effects for critical systems have attracted much attention in recent years. Here we derive exact finite-size corrections for the free energy F and the specific heat C of the critical ferromagnetic Ising model on the Mu x 2 Nu square lattice with Brascamp-Kunz (BK) boundary conditions [J. Math. Phys. 15, 66 (1974)] and compare such results with those under toroidal boundary conditions. When the ratio xi/2=(Mu+1)/2 Nu is smaller than 1 the behaviors of finite-size corrections for C are quite different for BK and toroidal boundary conditions; when ln(xi/2) is larger than 3, finite-size corrections for C in two boundary conditions approach the same values. In the limit Nu-->infinity we obtain the expansion of the free energy for infinitely long strip with BK boundary conditions. Our results are consistent with the conformal field theory prediction for the mixed boundary conditions by Cardy [Nucl. Phys. B 275, 200 (1986)] although the definitions of boundary conditions in two cases are different in one side of the long strip.
The Ising model in two dimensions with the special boundary conditions of Brascamp and Kunz is analyzed. Leading and subdominant scaling behavior of the Fisher zeros are determined exactly. The exact finite-size scaling, with corrections, of the specific heat is determined both at critical and effective critical (pseudocritical) points. The shift exponents associated with the scaling of these effective critical points are not the same as the inverse correlation length critical exponent. All corrections to scaling are analytic.
Abstract We derive exact finite-size corrections for the free energy F of the Ising model on the square lattice with Brascamp–Kunz boundary conditions. We calculate ratios r p ( ρ ) of pth coefficients of F for the infinitely long cylinder ( ) and the infinitely long Brascamp–Kunz strip ( ) at varying values of the aspect ratio . Like previous studies have shown for the two-dimensional dimer model, the limiting values p → ∞ of r p ( ρ ) exhibit abrupt anomalous behavior at certain values of ρ. These critical values of ρ and the limiting values of the finite-size-expansion-coefficient ratios differ, however, between the two models.
Abstract Based on the results published recently (Hucht 2017 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor . 50 065201), the universal finite-size contributions to the free energy of the square lattice Ising model on the L × M rectangle, with open boundary conditions in both directions, are calculated exactly in the finite-size scaling limit L , M → ∞ , T → T c , with fixed temperature scaling variable x ∝ ( T / T c − 1 ) M and fixed aspect ratio ρ ∝ L / M . We derive exponentially fast converging series for the related Casimir potential and Casimir force scaling functions. At the critical point T = T c we confirm predictions from conformal field theory (Cardy and Peschel 1988 Nucl. Phys . B 300 377, Kleban and Vassileva 1991 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen . 24 3407). The presence of corners and the related corner free energy has dramatic impact on the Casimir scaling functions and leads to a logarithmic divergence of the Casimir potential scaling function at criticality.
INTRODUCTION Finite-size scaling (FSS) is a well established technique for the extraction of critical exponents from finite volume analyses [1]. Such exponents characterise critical phenomena at a second-order phase transition. The simplest model exhibiting such a transition is the Ising model in two dimensions, which, despite a long history and extensive study, still o#ers new results and insights. Here, we study the model under the special boundary conditions of Brascamp and Kunz [2] to extract new information and to help resolve some hitherto puzzling features of FSS. Let CL (#) be the specific heat at inverse temperature # for a system of linear extent L. FSS of the specific heat is characterized by the location of its peak, #L , its height CL (# L ) and its value at the infinite-volume critical point CL (# c ). The peak position, #L , is a pseudocritical point which typically approaches # c as L ## as |# # c L -# , (1) where # is the shift exponent. In two dimensions,
The specific heat, energy, and free energy of an infinitely long, square-lattice ferromagnetic Ising strip consisting of
n parallel layers with free boundary conditions and a surface magnetic field
H1=kBTh1 imposed on the last layer, is analyzed for large
n in the light of finite-size scaling theory. It is shown rigorously that the free energy (and, similarly, the energy and specific heat) can be written asymptotically in the scaling form $\ensuremath{\Delta}f(n,t,{h}_{1})\ensuremath{\approx}{n}^{\ensuremath{-}2}(\mathrm{ln}n){W}_{1}(nt,{n}^{\frac{1}{2}}{h}_{1})+{n}^{\ensuremath{-}2}{W}_{2}(nt,{n}^{\frac{1}{2}}{h}_{1})$, where $t=\frac{(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c})}{{T}_{c}}$. The scaling functions
Wi(x,y) are computed in explicit closed form and shown to verify all the analyticity and asymptotic requirements anticipated by scaling theory. Furthermore, in the limit $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ at fixed $t\ensuremath{\ne}0$, the bulk and surface contributions to the thermodynamic properties are found to account for all except a correction of order ${e}^{\frac{\mathrm{pna}}{\ensuremath{\xi}(T)}}$, where
a is the lattice spacing and $\ensuremath{\xi}(T)$ is the bulk correlation length; the value of the small rational constant
p is interpreted in terms of interference effects between the two opposite boundaries (or "surfaces").
We analyze the exact partition function of the Ising model on a square lattice under helical boundary conditions obtained by Liaw [Phys. Rev. E 73, 055101(R) (2006)]. Based on such an expression, we then extend the algorithm of Ivashkevich, Izmailian, and Hu [J. Phys. A 35, 5543 (2002)] to derive an exact asymptotic expansion of the logarithm of the partition function and its first to fourth derivatives at the critical point. From such results, we find that the shift exponent for the specific heat is lambda=1 for all values of the helicity factor d . We also find that finite-size corrections for the free energy, the internal energy, and the specific heat of the model in a crucial way depend on the helicity factor of the lattice.
