Effect of Fano Resonance in photovoltaic

Abstract

Abstract We have shown that the Fano interference in the decay channels of a three-level system can lead to considerably different absorption and emission profiles. We found that a coherence can be built up in the ground state doublet, with strength depending on a coupling parameter that arises from the Fano interference. The coherence can in principle lead to breaking of the detail balance between the absorption and emission processes in atomic systems.

Fano interference controlled resonance profiles in photovoltaics and photo-detection

Konstantin E. Dorfman, Pankaj Jha, Sumanta Das

In this work we report a quantum interference mediated control of the resonance profiles in a generic three-level system and investigate its effect on key quantum interference (QI) phenomena. Namely in a three level configuration with doublets in the ground or excited states, we show control over enhancement and suppression of the emission (absorption) profiles. This is achieved by manipulation of the strength of QI and the energy spacing of the doublets. We analyze the application of such QI induced control of the resonance profile in photo-detection, and photovoltaics in agreement with the results of Scully [M.O.Scully, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 207701 (2010)] and disagreement with Kirk [A.P.Kirk, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 048703 (2011)].

Tunneling induced transparency: Fano interference in intersubband transitions

Holger Schmidt, K. L. Campman, Arthur C. Gossard +1 more

We report the observation of tunneling induced transparency in asymmetric double quantum well structures. Resonant tunneling through a thin barrier is used to coherently couple the two upper states in a three level system of electronic subbands in a GaAs/AlGaAs structure. This creates Fano-type interferences for the collective intersubband excitations in the absorption from the ground state, analogous to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in atomic systems. We observe a 50% reduction in absorption between the subband resonances which can be explained by taking into account the coherent coupling of the upper states. We analyze the bias dependent absorption spectra and determine the relevant lifetime broadening and dephasing rates for the transitions.

Three-Channel Interference Interpretation of Fano Profile

Bo 波 Li 李, Tian-Jun Li, Zi-Ru Ma +3 more

Fano resonance is a ubiquitous phenomenon, and it is commonly interpreted as a two-channel interference of the discrete and continuous channels. The present work investigates the Fano profile from a perspective of the temporal evolution of the wave function. By exciting the atom with a δ pulse and calculating the evolution of the wave function, the Fano formula is deduced. The results clearly show that the Fano resonance is of a three-channel interference, which is different from the traditional understanding. The three channels are revealed as the ground-continuum, ground-discrete-continuum, and a previously unmentioned third channel, i.e., ground-continuum-discrete-continuum. The present three-channel interpretation can be easily generalized to other physical systems, contributing to a deeper understanding of the Fano profile.

Signatures of Fano resonances in four-wave-mixing experiments

T. Meier, A. Schulze, P. Thomas +2 more

Optical transitions into discrete levels coupled to an optically active continuum lead to asymmetrical Fano lines in the linear absorption spectra, reflecting interference between the excitation channels. We investigate the corresponding four-wave-mixing spectra for the nonlinear optical response within a model of noninteracting electrons. Our results show that four-wave-mixing experiments provide a useful tool to identify Fano resonances.

Fano interference in type-II semiconductor quantum-well structures

We predict, on the basis of a model calculation, that Fano interference effects may be observed in type-II quantum-well structures resulting in pronounced nonreciprocal absorption and emission profiles and interference narrowing due to overlapping resonances.
