Signal-to-noise characteristics of nonlinear optical amplifiers

Robert W. Boyd, G. S. Agarwal, William V. Davis +3 more

In this paper, we present the results of our theoretical and experimental studies of the noise properties of optical amplifiers that operate by means of nonlinear optical gain processes. We pay particular attention to amplifiers that utilize the nonlinear optical response of strongly driven atomic vapors, and we compare the results of our measurements with theoretical predictions for the quantum noise limit of an optical amplifier. Our work focuses on optical amplifiers that utilize the nonlinear optical response of atomic vapors.>

Photon-number noise reduction from a nonlinear fiber-loop mirror

Stefan Schmitt, Friedrich König, B. Mikulla +3 more

Summary form only given.Nonlinear unbalanced antiresonant ring interferometers have been proposed to provide various optical functions. The nonlinear optical-loop mirror (NOLM) is such an unbalanced fiber interferometer for ultrafast all-optical processing. Recently, it was suggested that the nonlinear input-output behavior of this device might also deamplify photon-number noise of coherent pulses below the shot-noise limit. Here, we present experimental evidence for directly detectable squeezing from a NOLM.

Extra phase noise from thermal fluctuations in nonlinear optical crystals

J. E. S. César, A. S. Coelho, K. N. Cassemiro +4 more

We show theoretically and experimentally that scattered light by thermal phonons inside a second-order nonlinear crystal is the source of additional phase noise observed in optical parametric oscillators. This additional phase noise reduces the quantum correlations and has hitherto hindered the direct production of multipartite entanglement in a single nonlinear optical system. We cooled the nonlinear crystal and observed a reduction in the extra noise. Our treatment of this noise can be successfully applied to different systems in the literature.
