Fundamental principles and applications of nonlinear optical phenomena in classical and quantum electrodynamics

Masud Mansuripur

Nonlinear optical phenomena play important roles in the vast emerging fields of micro- and nanotechnology. This paper describes the general characteristics of nonlinear optical materials and systems, with a focus on parametric amplification, frequency-doubling with pump depletion, quantum noise accompanying attenuation and amplification of light beams, and parametric fluorescence.

Quantum nonlinear optics in artificially phase-matched materials

Juan Ariel Levenson, P. Vidaković, C. Simonneau

We present a brief overview of the recent developments in quantum optics concerning the control and reduction of quantum noise. The achievements on squeezing, quantum non-demolition measurement and noiseless optical functions are summarized. The present limitations in quantum performance are discussed. We particularly stress the role of nonlinear optics and point out the advantages expected from the implementation of new artificially phase-matched materials, in different configurations including cascaded second-order nonlinearities.

Many-body theory of quantum noise

Christopher J. Mertens, T. A. B. Kennedy, S. Swain

A self-consistent many-body approach to quantum noise is presented. Many-photon polarization effects produce system-size scaling in quantum dissipative systems. The role of system-size quantum noise on the dynamics near the bifurcation point in an optical parametric oscillator is investigated, and nonlinear spectra are presented in the nonadiabatic limit.
