Abstract

We demonstrate a hybrid photon-pair source combining an AlGaAs Bragg-reflection waveguide with a polymer photonic integrated circuit. The fiber-coupled module generates telecom C band photon pairs at room temperature, enabling scalable quantum photonic integration.

Hybrid photonic devices represent a promising solution to the effective on-chip integration of all the components required for the generation, manipulation and detection of non-classical states of light encoding quantum information. We present an AlGaAs source of highly entangled photon pairs envisioned for the hybridization with silicon-on-insulator integrated platforms, in order to take benefit from the strong second order nonlinearity and the compliance with electrical pumping of the III-V platform and the maturity and CMOS compatibility of silicon photonic circuitry, enabling a wide variety of quantum information applications.

Biphoton state generation and engineering with bright hybrid III–V/silicon photonic devices

Lorenzo Lazzari, Jérémie Schuhmann, Othmane Meskine +7 more

Hybrid photonic circuits, harnessing the complementary strengths of multiple materials, represent a key resource to enable compact, scalable platforms for quantum technologies. In particular, the availability of bright sources of tunable biphoton states is eagerly awaited to meet the variety of applications currently under development. In this work we demonstrate a heterogeneously integrated device working at room temperature that merges biphoton generation and on-chip quantum state engineering, combining an AlGaAs photon-pair source with a CMOS-compatible silicon-on-insulator (SOI) circuit. Photon pairs are generated in the C telecom band via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and transferred to the SOI chip through a multimodal evanescent coupling scheme. This design achieves a pair generation rate above 10 6 s −1 mW −1 and a coincidence-to-accidental ratio up to 600. Crucially, the coupling design induces strong and predictable transformations of the biphoton joint spectral amplitude, enabling complex quantum state engineering entirely on-chip in a compact device compliant with electrical pumping.

On-chip III-V monolithic integration of entangled photons pairs sources and polarizing beamsplitters

Maria I. Amanti, Félicien Appas, Aristide Lemaître +3 more

Integrated quantum photonics is a key tool towards large scale quantum technologies. In this work we present an AlGaAs-based photonic circuit for on-chip generation and manipulation of broadband polarization-entangled photon pairs. The quantum state is generated by Type-II spontaneous parametric down conversion in AlGaAs Bragg reflection waveguides at telecom wavelengths and room temperature. Polarization entangled photons are manipulated over a frequency band of around 50 nm by an integrated polarizing beam splitter. We demonstrate Hong-Ou-Mandel visibility of 80% for a quantum device where the photon pairs generation and manipulation are implemented in a single chip.

Semiconductor sources of photon pairs

Gregor Weihs, T. Günthner, Benedikt Pressl +5 more

We demonstrate efficient photon pair generation for quantum communication using an all-semiconductor approach. In an AlGaAs Bragg-reflection waveguide we employ spontaneous parametric down-conversion to produce photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths. The various phase-matching solutions present in our device can be used to create timebin or polarization entanglement. This approach can to lead to a fully integrated photon pair source with the pump laser, active and passive optical devices all on a single semiconductor chip.

Hybrid integration for spatially multiplexed single-photon generation

Thomas Meany, Lutfi Arif Ngah, Matthew J. Collins +7 more

We discuss the hybrid integration of multiple components for the production of telecom band single photon sources. We implement four, on-chip, waveguide channels capable of producing four spatially separated collinear pairs of single photons. Using laser inscribed waveguide circuits and point-by-point bre Bragg gratings (FBG), we interface, separate and lter generated photon pairs. We propose using fast switches to actively route multiple heralded single photons to a single output producing an enhanced rate while maintaining a xed noise level.
