Second-order generators with quadratic Leibniz defect on full matrix algebras: a self-contained study of pure dephasing with Hamiltonian drift

Abstract

This is a self-contained account, with complete proofs, of linear maps on the full matrix algebra whose Leibniz defect equals the product of the commutators with a fixed self-adjoint matrix H. Such maps are exactly one half of the double commutator with H plus a commutator with a second matrix K. For skew-adjoint K they generate unital, trace-preserving quantum Markov semigroups with a single self-adjoint Lindblad operator. Topics: normal form, reconstruction of H from the defect, and classification up to automorphisms; dynamics, duality and the Lindblad dissipation inequality; fixed points, an exact relaxation criterion and ergodicity without commutativity assumptions; the commutator energy, its Dirichlet-form property, and seven conditions equivalent to H and K commuting; a sharp complete modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for pure dephasing with arbitrary spectrum; an exactly solved qubit with non-commuting drift; several self-adjoint Lindblad operators. Most of the material is known or elementary, and the text says so. The sharp entropy inequality and a finite-time optimal control result are taken from two companion notes by the author. Status: not reviewed by a human referee. The role of AI tools is described in the text.

A sharp complete modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for Hamiltonian dephasing

Christoph Hartmann

We consider the pure dephasing semigroup on n x n matrices whose generator is one half of the double commutator with a fixed self-adjoint matrix H. Let delta be the smallest distance between two distinct eigenvalues of H. We show that the relative entropy of any state with respect to its pinching onto the commutant of H decays at least like exp(-delta^2 t), and that the same holds, with the same constant, when the system is coupled to an arbitrary finite-dimensional reference system. Equivalently, the modified logarithmic Sobolev constant and its complete version are both equal to delta^2 / 2. This is the spectral gap of the generator and hence the largest possible value. The spectrum of H is arbitrary; it may be degenerate and need not lie in a lattice. The proof adapts the argument of L. Zhao for the heat semigroup on the circle (arXiv:2608.23482). For lattice spectra, transference from the circle gives a weaker rate unless the lattice spacing equals delta. We also note that equality of this constant with the spectral gap can fail for two commuting dephasing operators. Status: checked by three AI-based passes and numerically, but not by a human referee. Novelty has not yet been independently confirmed.

Mathematical models of Markovian dephasing

Franco Fagnola, John Edward Gough, Hendra I Nurdin +1 more

Abstract We develop a notion of dephasing under the action of a quantum Markov semigroup in terms of convergence of operators to a block-diagonal form determined by irreducible invariant subspaces. If the latter are all one-dimensional, we say the dephasing is maximal . With this definition, we show that a key necessary requirement on the Lindblad generator is bistochasticity, and focus on characterizing whether a maximally dephasing evolution may be described in terms of a unitary dilation with only classical noise, as opposed to a genuine non-commutative Hudson–Parthasarathy dilation. To this end, we make use of a seminal result of Kümmerer and Maassen on the class of commutative dilations of quantum Markov semigroups. In particular, we introduce an intrinsic quantity constructed from the generator, the Hamiltonian obstruction , which vanishes if and only if the latter admits a self-adjoint representation and quantifies the hindrance to having a classical diffusive noise model.

Lee-Yang preserving quantum Markov semigroups and channels

Dongsheng Wei

This preprint studies quantum Markov dynamics and quantum channels that preserve the Lee–Yang property. For systems of two or more qubits, preservation for all Lee–Yang density matrices forces tensor-product dynamics, with local generators characterized by explicit semidefinite conditions. This ordinary preservation property is equivalent to preservation in the presence of arbitrary inert reference systems. For systems containing higher spins, preservation of all pure Lee–Yang inputs excludes intersite interactions and forces isotropic diffusion with axial drift at higher-spin sites. The paper also develops classifications of static maps with stable full Choi tensors, including singular one-qubit maps and independently covariant maps between finite spins, and establishes quantitative rigidity results for diagonal Hamiltonians. The proofs combine positivity of quantum maps, polynomial root-collision arguments, and coherent tensor contraction. The manuscript includes a disclosure of the AI tools used in its development.

Exact Second-Order Survivors in Decohering Quantum Matrix Algebras

Katsuya Tagawa

We present a finite-dimensional exact model of second-order survival under decoherence. Working in the matrix algebra M_N(C), we consider a pure dephasing semigroup whose fixed-point algebra is the commutative diagonal algebra. The associated stable memory projection erases first-order off-diagonal matrix units, but preserves diagonal traceless components. For each local nilpotent pair Λ_ij = E_ij and Ω_ji = E_ji, the ordering defect is computed exactly as Hol_ε(Λ_ij, Ω_ji) = −ε²(E_ii − E_jj), with no higher-order remainder. Although the first-order off-diagonal generators are erased by the stable memory projection, this second-order ordering defect survives exactly as a diagonal traceless direction. Under the identification of diagonal density matrices with probability vectors, these survivors correspond to tangent vectors e_i − e_j of the classical statistical simplex, and their span gives the tangent space on which the Fisher–Rao metric is defined. The result does not claim a derivation of spacetime geometry or of the Fisher–Rao metric itself. Rather, it isolates an exact local mechanism by which nilpotent noncommutative ordering defects survive decoherence as statistical tangent directions.

GENERATORS OF DETAILED BALANCE QUANTUM MARKOV SEMIGROUPS

Franco Fagnola, Veronica Umanità

For a quantum Markov semigroup [Formula: see text] on the algebra [Formula: see text] with a faithful invariant state ρ, we can define an adjoint [Formula: see text] with respect to the scalar product determined by ρ. In this paper, we solve the open problems of characterizing adjoints [Formula: see text] that are also a quantum Markov semigroup and satisfy the detailed balance condition in terms of the operators H, Lk in the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad representation [Formula: see text] of the generator of [Formula: see text]. We study the adjoint semigroup with respect to both scalar products 〈a, b〉 = tr (ρa*b) and 〈a, b〉 = tr (ρ1/2a*ρ1/2 b).

On The Generators of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups

Alexander Wiedemann

In recent years, digraph induced generators of quantum dynamical semigroups have been introduced and studied, particularly in the context of unique relaxation and invariance. We define the class of pair block diagonal generators, which allows for additional interaction coefficients but preserves the main structural properties. Namely, when the basis of the underlying Hilbert space is given by the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian (for example the generic semigroups), then the action of the semigroup leaves invariant the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix spaces. In this case, we explicitly compute all invariant states of the semigroup. In order to define this class we provide a characterization of when the Gorini- Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) equation defines a proper generator when arbitrary Lindblad operators are allowed (in particular, they do not need to be trace- less as demanded by the GKSL Theorem). Moreover, we consider the converse con- struction to show that every generator naturally gives rise to a digraph, and that under certain assumptions the properties of this digraph can be exploited to gain knowledge of both the number and the structure of the invariant states of the corre- sponding semigroup. We also consider more general constructions on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space, perhaps infinite dimensional. In partic- ular, we prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on such an algebra which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of con- tractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak∗ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an or- thonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe this form of the generator of a quantum Markov semigroup on the von Neumann algebra of all bounded linear op- erators on a Hilbert space which has an invariant faithful normal state under the assumption that the generator of the associated semigroup has compact resolvent, or under the assumption that the minimal unitary dilation of the associated semigroup of contractions is compact.
