Abstract

We demonstrate efficient generation of optical bottle beams for atom trapping and tweezing applications. Our approach produces multiple bottle beam regions, longitudinally, from a compact metasurface that exploits interference of free-space eigenmodes.

We report optical metasurfaces that enable bottle-beam arrays for blue-detuned trapping of neutral atoms. Our approach only requires a single metasurface which significantly reduces the complexity of the trapping experiments.

Generation of "optical bottle beams"

Jochen Arlt, Johannes Courtial, Miles J. Padgett

Summary form only given. The authors show that periodically along the propagation direction, the two component Bessel beams, with different sizes of central spot, destructively interfere to form localised intensity minima bounded in three dimensions by regions of higher intensity. We term a beam of this kind an "optical bottle beam" and believe that beams of this kind may have uses for atom trapping applications.

Efficient generation of optical bottle beams

Yuzhe Xiao, Zhaoning Yu, Raymond A. Wambold +5 more

Abstract Optical bottle beams can be used to trap atoms and small low‐index particles. We introduce a figure of merit (FoM) for optical bottle beams, specifically in the context of optical traps, and use it to compare optical bottle‐beam traps obtained by three different methods. Using this FoM and an optimization algorithm, we identified the optical bottle‐beam traps based on a Gaussian beam illuminating a metasurface that are superior in terms of power efficiency than existing approaches. We numerically demonstrate a silicon metasurface for creating an optical bottle‐beam trap.

Generation of adjustable partially coherent bottle beams

The experimental realization of partially coherent bottle beams is reported in this paper. It is shown that by controlling the coherence of the incident light we can generate the adjustable partially coherent bottle beams. The generated bottle beams may have applications in atom optics, and optical tweezers, etc..
