Abstract

Abstract Optical bottle beams can be used to trap atoms and small low‐index particles. We introduce a figure of merit (FoM) for optical bottle beams, specifically in the context of optical traps, and use it to compare optical bottle‐beam traps obtained by three different methods. Using this FoM and an optimization algorithm, we identified the optical bottle‐beam traps based on a Gaussian beam illuminating a metasurface that are superior in terms of power efficiency than existing approaches. We numerically demonstrate a silicon metasurface for creating an optical bottle‐beam trap.

Atom trapping in an interferometrically generated bottle beam trap

L. Isenhower, W. Williams, A. Dally +1 more

We demonstrate an optical bottle beam trap created by interfering two fundamental Gaussian beams with different waists. The beams are derived from a single laser source using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer whose arms have unequal magnifications. Destructive interference of the two beams from the Mach-Zehnder leads to a three-dimensional intensity null at the mutual focus of the beams. We demonstrate trapping of cold cesium atoms in a blue detuned bottle beam trap.

We report optical metasurfaces that enable bottle-beam arrays for blue-detuned trapping of neutral atoms. Our approach only requires a single metasurface which significantly reduces the complexity of the trapping experiments.

Bottle atom trapping configuration by optical dipole forces

Omar Marzook Al-Dossary

The bottle beam configuration is a light field created by the interference of a pair of Laguerre–Gauss light beams with zero orbital angular momentum. In this work we show the theoretical study of the bottle beam as well as the use of this beam for the creation of a novel atom optical dipole trap namely the bottle atom trap. In such a trap the resulting dark trapping region is three-dimensional and has a cylindrical symmetry. These promising results show that this trap is a nice candidate for trapping Bose–Einstein condensates and may serve as an optical tweezer mechanism potentially useful for trapping micron-sized dielectric particles.
