Frustrated spin-1/2 model with all-antiferromagnetic exchange on Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) has been extensively explored, and in this work we study the quantum phase diagram of isotropic Heisenberg spin- 1 / 2 model on the SSL with ferromagnetic exchange interactions along leg, and antiferromagnetic couplings along the diagonal bonds ( J ). Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization calculations, we identify four distinct ground-state (gs) phases for this frustrated spin-1/2 model: stripe ( π , 0 ) , stripe ( 0 , π ) , ferromagnetic, and spiral-dimer phases. In the spiral-dimer phase the gs can exhibit dimer formation along the diagonal bonds with or without spins spiral along the x axis or y axis in different parameter regime and these states are connected through crossovers. There is a continuous transition between stripe with a long-range spin-spin correlations and spiral-dimer phase with a short-range correlations. An effective spin parameter is introduced to accurately determine the phase boundaries. Our DMRG results differ significantly from previous Schwinger boson mean-field theory predictions. The spiral phase occurs in a narrow range of the parameter space and shows short-range correlations in the system.

The ground state (gs) of antiferromagnetically coupled dimers on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) stabilizes many exotic phases and has been extensively studied. The gs properties of ferromagnetically coupled dimers on SSL are equally important but unexplored. In this model the exchange coupling along the x-axis (Jx) and y-axis (Jy) are ferromagnetic and the diagonal exchange coupling (J) is antiferromagnetic. In this work we explore the quantum phase diagram of ferromagnetically coupled dimer model numerically using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We note that in Jx-Jy parameter space this model exhibits six interesting phases:(I) stripe (0,π), (II) stripe (π,0), (III) perfect dimer, (IV) X-spiral, (V) Y-spiral and (VI) ferromagnetic phase. Phase boundaries of these quantum phases are determined using the correlation functions and gs energies. We also notice the correlation length in this system is less than four lattice units in most of the parameter regimes. The non-collinear behaviour in X-spiral and Y-spiral phase and the dependence of pitch angles on model parameters are also studied.
Spiral and Mixed Plaquette-Dimer Phases in the S=1 and 3/2 Shastry-Sutherland Heisenberg Model
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the S=1 and S=3/2 Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and cluster mean-field theory (CMFT). Between the dimer phase and Néel antiferromagnetic phases, we identify two intermediate phases: a mixed plaquette-dimer (MPD) phase and a spiral phase. These phases are characterized via bond energies and spin-spin correlation functions; phase boundaries are located from the ground-state energy derivative and entanglement entropy. The MPD phase exhibits strong intradimer correlations and weak tetramerization on the empty plaquettes, and its transitions to the dimer and spiral phases are first order. Combining our results with the known boundaries for S=1/2 and the classical limit S→∞, we construct a global S-g phase diagram. This diagram reveals the progressive suppression of quantum effects with increasing S and offers a theoretical framework for larger-S SSL materials.
The Shastry-Sutherland lattice, one of the simplest systems with geometrical frustration, which has an exact eigenstate by putting singlets on diagonal bonds, can be realized in a group of layered compounds and raises both theoretical and experimental interest. Most of the previous studies on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice are focusing on the Heisenberg model. Here we opt for the Hubbard model to calculate phase diagrams over a wide range of interaction parameters, and show the competing effects of interaction, frustration and temperature. At low temperature, frustration is shown to favor a paramagnetic metallic ground state, while interaction drives the system to an antiferromagnetic insulator phase. Between these two phases, there are an antiferromagnetic metal phase and a paramagnetic insulator phase (which should consist of a small plaquette phase and a dimer phase) resulting from the competition of the frustration and the interaction. Our results may shed light on more exhaustive studies about quantum phase transitions in geometrically frustrated systems.
Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we determine the phase diagram of a frustrated bond-alternating S = 1/2 Heisenberg ladder with ferro-antiferromagnetic couplings at zero temperature. With the interactions between spins along the rungs set, we identify three spin-gapped phases (the Haldane phase, the singlet phase and the dimer phase) in the whole parameter range. The analysis of our data shows that two-leg spin bond-alternating ladders have a rich phase diagram if both rung and diagonal couplings are taken into account.
We study the half-filled single-band Hubbard model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping t , incorporating (i) a frustrating diagonal hopping t ′ to probe the emergence of spin-liquid behavior, and (ii) an additional Heisenberg exchange J that explicitly stabilizes plaquette-singlet correlations. Using the variational cluster approximation (VCA) with exact diagonalization at zero temperature on an eight-site cluster, we map the phase diagrams in the ( U / t , t ′ / t ) and ( U / t , J / t ) parameter planes. In the ( U / t , t ′ / t ) plane, our analysis uncovers a competition between Néel antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with staggered magnetization and a nonmagnetic regime lacking conventional order, consistent with a nonmagnetic insulating phase that may be related to the spin-liquid-like regimes reported in previous studies. In contrast, the ( U / t , J / t ) phase diagram exhibits a competition between the Néel antiferromagnet and a solid valence-bonding valence bond plaquette (PS), where spins form localized singlet plaquettes. Most notably, we observe that the transition from the PS phase to the Néel AFM phase is a first-order phase transition, with a discontinuous jump of the order parameters at the phase boundary, in quantitative agreement with high-pressure heat-capacity measurements on SrCu 2 ( BO 3 ) 2 [J. Guo , ]. Thus, our VCA analysis underscores the subtle interplay of geometric frustration, quantum fluctuations, and dimensionality, and elucidates the crucial role of short-range correlations in stabilizing and competing ground states of frustrated quantum magnets.
Dimerized spin-1/2 ladders exhibit a variety of phase structures, which depend on the intra-chain and inter-chain spin exchange energies as well as on the dimerization pattern of the ladder. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, we study critical properties of the bond-alternating two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder with diagonal interaction J ×. Two types of spin systems, staggered dimerized antiferromagnetic ladder and columnar dimerized ferro-antiferromagnetic couplings ladder, are investigated. To clarify the phase transition behaviors, we simultaneously analyze the string order parameter (SOP), the twisted order parameter (TOP), as well as a measurement of the quantum information analysis. Based on measuring this different observables, we establish the phase diagram accurately and give the fitting functions of the phase boundaries. In addition, the phase transition of cross-coupled spin ladder (in the absence of intrinsic dimerization) is also discussed.
