The Ontology of the Observer: Constraint Networks as Epistemic Agents

Abstract

What is an observer? Quantum mechanics requires one for measurement but has never defined one. Statistical mechanics invokes one for entropy but has never specified what it is. Cosmology depends on one but cannot say where it stands. For a century, physics has treated the observer as a primitive — a black box whose internal structure is irrelevant to fundamental theory, whose defining features are left to philosophy, and whose necessary connection to the physical world remains unarticulated. This document provides the constitutional answer within the Energy-Efficiency Theory framework. An Observer is a constraint network subsystem that executes the detection → registration operation chain. Detection: basal differences in the environment (L2, free and inexhaustible) produce physical imprints on the Observer's detection interface through energy exchange — these imprints are Transient Events (CND v4.0: S₃ → S₂ → S₀), short-lived constraint excitations that dissipate if not registered. Registration: a physical imprint, upon satisfying five conditions (A(t) ≥ E_b^form, Γ(η) > 0, maintenance coupling probability P_maint > 0, template matching, and τ_reg < Δt), is bound by a constraint boundary and sustained by maintenance energy — becoming constraint-anchored information (L3, Information Ontology v3.4) = Being = Matter (Two Forms of Energy v3.4, P0.5). Each registration event costs at minimum A_EET = ħ/2 (Bifurcation Duality Theorem, CLOSED-in-EET). This definition is universal. It applies to a Geiger counter (detection = ionization → electron avalanche; registration = pulse counting into a register), to a thermometer (detection = thermal expansion → liquid column displacement; registration = scale marking), to a human scientist (detection = sensory transduction; registration = neural encoding), and to an AI inference engine (detection = sensor input; registration = memory storage). The Observer does not require an internal model. Internal modeling is the defining feature of the CCN subclass (Cognitive Constraint Networks v1.0: Observer + Internal Model). This single revision resolves the century-old impasse: instruments are Observers, measurement does not require consciousness, and the Heisenberg Cut is the Type I / Type II interface of the constraint network — not an arbitrary division between "quantum system" and "classical observer." Version 2.4 is a comprehensive constitutional upgrade. The core definition is re-anchored in Information Ontology v3.4 (constraint-anchored information = Being = Matter), Difference Ontology v3.3 (basal difference → constraint-anchored difference), and CND v4.0 (Transient Event → Formation). All physical operations are described using CND v4.0 five-operation grammar. The Π triple decomposition is physically re-anchored. A_EET = ħ/2 is registered as a CLOSED constitutional constant. The Five-Channel Complete Constraint Second Law provides the thermodynamic framework for Observer noise decomposition and degradation dynamics. Barrier Asymmetry is conditionalized: E_b^melt ≫ E_b^form emerges from Γ(η) decay at η ≠ 1; at η = 1, the Formation/Meltdown Energy Symmetry holds. Full companion ontology version synchronization through June 2026. All v2.3 constitutional content preserved. The document establishes the Observer as a general physical concept — as fundamental to the architecture of constraint networks as particles and fields are to the architecture of matter. Detection → registration is the irreducible atomic unit of observation. Every physical record in the universe, from the first ionization track in a cloud chamber to the last entry in a laboratory notebook, is a product of this operation chain. The Observer is not an external witness to physical reality. The Observer is a physical subsystem within it — a constraint network that selects, binds, and sustains specific patterns of the substrate as persistent Being. The Ontology of Measurement and Uncertainty: Operational Deepening of the Observer's Measurement Constitution

Hongpu Yang

How does measurement work, quantitatively, under finite energy? The Ontology of the Observer v2.3 (Part IV) establishes the constitutional structure of measurement --- that measurement is constraint formation, that it is governed by a tripartite $\eta$-coupling, and that its precision is bounded by the product of three cooperative capacities $\Gamma(\eta_T) \cdot \Gamma(\eta_P) \cdot \Gamma(\eta_O)$. Energy-Efficient Modelology v2.8 establishes the methodological position of measurement --- Fidelity Testing (Stage III), the stage where a model's predictions are tested against real-space energy exchange. But neither document provides the quantitative operational model: the physical expression of $\mathrm{SNR}_0$, the definition of $\eta_{\mathrm{meas}}$, the per-factor variance decomposition, the dimensional structure of the trilemma, or the complete energy accounting of a single measurement event. This document provides that operational expansion. Version 2.0 is a complete constitutional reconstruction, upgrading the Measurement Ontology from v1.1 (Core Rules v5.3 alignment) to v6.0 alignment as a dual-anchored operational deepening satellite. \textbf{Dual Anchoring.} The Measurement Ontology is uniquely positioned at the intersection of the Physical Constitution (as SAT of Observer v2.3 Part IV) and the Cognitive Constitution (as physical executor of Modelology v2.8 Stage III). It is neither a constitutional mother text nor a single-domain satellite --- it is the operational bridge between the physics of constraint formation and the methodology of model validation. \textbf{Mathematical Core Rebuilt.} The erroneous $\Gamma(\eta) = \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{1-((\eta-1)/(\eta+1))^2}$ is replaced by the v6.0 authoritative form $\Gamma(\eta) = 1 - x^2$ with $\Gamma(1) = 1$. $\mathrm{SNR}_0$ is given its physical expression: $\mathrm{SNR}_0 = E_b^{\mathrm{form}}/\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{EET}} = 2E_b^{\mathrm{form}}/\hbar$. $\eta_{\mathrm{meas}}$ is defined as the geometric mean of the tripartite $\eta$-ratios, with derivation from the multiplicative structure of the SNR bound. The trilemma formula is corrected to dimensionless form with the cost rate $\dot{C}$ defined as the observer's total operational power $P_*^O$. All dependent derivations are recalculated. \textbf{Uncertainty Principle --- First-Principles EET Derivation.} The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is derived directly from the L-1 Constitutional Presuppositions --- Finite Distinguishability (state space is discrete, minimum distinguishable difference $d_{\min}$ exists) and Finite Actionability (minimum action quantum $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{EET}} = \hbar/2$) --- without borrowing wave-particle duality, de Broglie relations, or any external quantum postulate. The $\eta$-generalized form follows naturally from the cooperative capacity modulation of both resolution and action cost. \textbf{QM$\leftrightarrow$Measurement Duality Completed.} QM v3.0 (Part I \S6) registered the QM side of this CLOSED constitutional duality. This document registers the measurement side: QM describes Divide-dominant coherent propagation; Measurement describes Cut$\rightarrow$Encapsulate coherent termination. The duality is now bidirectionally registered. \textbf{Modelology Integration.} The P-E-F-U cycle is identified as the atomic unit of the Modelology micro-cycle (Stage II $\leftrightarrow$ Stage III). Each measurement event is one P-E-F-U cycle; the micro-cycle aggregates multiple cycles before Adjudicate makes a structural-level decision. This nesting relation explains why single measurements rarely trigger paradigm shifts: $A(v,t)$ must accumulate over many cycles before crossing $E_b^{\mathrm{melt}}(v)$. \textbf{22 Companion Bridges.} The measurement ontology now bridges to 22 companion documents, including 14 new bridges to Causality v1.8 (Causal Arbitrage Theorem, $K_{\max}$ causal compression), Contradiction v1.6 (Gap$\to$Tension$\to A(t)\to$Divide generation chain, seven-state classification, $\Omega(v)$ synergistic meltdown index), Ben-Se v3.3 (Four Universal Laws measurement instantiation, Degeneration Corridor, Adjudicate Power Failure, constraint circle), Xu-Shi v3.3 (Self-Measurement Paradox, Pseudo-Shi, Operational Feasibility Table, Four Virtues), QM v3.0 (no-cloning from Cut asymmetry), Phase Transition v3.0, Statistical Mechanics v2.0, and Hierarchical Depth v3.1. Resources Constitution bridges are classified as OPERATIONAL USAGE --- measurement deploys all four resource dynamics without belonging to them. \textbf{New Operational Content.} Version 2.0 adds the complete energy accounting of a single measurement event (six-stage energy flow from probe injection through permanent maintenance), the Sacred Triangle measurement expression ($\Delta S_{\mathrm{prod}} \cdot I_{\mathrm{record}} \approx k_B \cdot E_b^{\mathrm{form}}$), the $\dot{S}_{\mathrm{inv}}$--SNR quantitative coupling, multi-probe generalization of the tripartite framework, continuous weak measurement in EET, the preferred basis as a consequence of constraint network locality, $\Pi_{\mathrm{sink}}$ as cascaded consolidation, the measurement record lifecycle, non-destructive vs.\ destructive measurement classification, constitutional limits of measurability, and measurement as causal arbitrage. \textbf{Constitutional Status}: This document does \textbf{not} claim CLOSED-in-EET status. All theorems carry \textbf{STANDARD} (operational expansion of CLOSED structural forms) or \textbf{WORKING HYPOTHESIS} (empirically calibrated models) status. {Keywords}: Measurement; uncertainty; tripartite $\eta$-coupling; SNR bound; variance quadripartition; race-to-threshold; measurement trilemma; Zeno/Anti-Zeno; POVM; Cross-Constitutional Nexus; QM$\leftrightarrow$Measurement duality; Fidelity Testing; Modelology; Energy-Efficiency Theory

The Ontology of Quantum Mechanics: Coherent Free-State Propagation and Constraint Formation

Hongpu Yang

What is quantum mechanics, constitutionally? This document provides the answer within the Energy-Efficiency Theory framework: quantum mechanics is not an independent set of physical laws, nor a "theory of particles," nor a "theory of measurement." Quantum mechanics is the dynamics of non-matter—the coherent propagation of free-state energy (E_f, E_c = 0) along Type II edges of the constraint network at the optimal cooperative capacity point η ≈ 1. Constraint Dynamics (CND v4.0) describes the dynamics of matter (Being, E_c > 0). Measurement is the constitutional interface between them: a Cut → Encapsulate event at the Type I/Type II boundary that terminates non-matter propagation and creates a persistent matter record. The QM ↔ Measurement Constitutional Duality is the constitutional expression of the Non-Matter/Matter distinction in dynamics. Version 3.1 is a comprehensive constitutional upgrade that preserves all v3.0 content while introducing five core refinements. (i) The Matter/Non-Matter constitutional framework (Particle v3.3) is implanted throughout: QM governs non-matter; measurement is the non-matter → matter constitutional transition; the wavefunction ψ = |ψ| e^{iS/A_EET} is the complex amplitude of non-matter propagation—physically real (ontic), not epistemic, not many-worlds. (ii) Barrier Asymmetry is conditionalized: E_b^melt ≫ E_b^form emerges from Γ(η) decay at η ≠ 1; at η = 1, E_b^form = E_b^melt = A_EET · ω (Inertia v3.4, CLOSED). Quantum coherence is protected by the three-engine architecture. (iii) The decoherence rate is corrected from a contradictory single-factor model to a two-channel additive model distinguishing encapsulation-driven decoherence (∝ f_enc(L)) from efficiency-imbalance-driven decoherence (∝ 1−Γ(η)). (iv) The quantum-to-classical transition is refined from a binary "L ≥ 3" threshold to a three-regime crossover governance (L ≤ 2 quantum, L = 3–4 crossover, L ≥ 5 effective classical), with the L_branch concept distinguishing whole-object coherence (excluded) from collective-coordinate coherence (experimentally observed). (v) The Schrödinger's cat paradox receives its constitutional resolution: the radioactive atom is non-matter (transient constraint events); the cat is matter (E ∈ {0,1} binary). The paradox arises from conflating these two constitutional domains. Ten core constitutional deepenings distinguish v3.1 from its predecessor. DEEPENING-1: The wavefunction's ontic status is systematically situated against all six major QM interpretations (Copenhagen, Many-Worlds, de Broglie–Bohm, QBism, GRW, EET), establishing EET's distinct constitutional position. DEEPENING-2: The five-channel complete constraint Second Law (CND v4.0, CLOSED) is integrated into the quantum measurement framework, unifying passive decoherence, environmental decoherence, and measurement-induced decoherence as three variants of meltdown channel activation. DEEPENING-3: The dual-channel decoherence model unifies elastic decoherence (reversible, ∝ 1−Γ(η)) and plastic decoherence (irreversible, ∝ C(t), measurement collapse) within a single constitutional framework, resolving the measurement problem. DEEPENING-4: The non-matter → matter constitutional transition is established as the three-step measurement dynamics (Difference Detection → Template Matching → Persistent Record Formation), constitutionally anchored in the constraint formation competition framework. DEEPENING-5: The line graph duality (Field v3.1 R4, Particle v3.3 Part VI) is registered as the graph-theoretic foundation of wave-particle duality—not a quantum mystery, but a universal graph-theoretic theorem. DEEPENING-6: QM and GR co-originate from the energy bifurcation at η = 1: QM is the dynamics of non-matter; GR is the geometry of matter. No "quantization of gravity" is required. DEEPENING-7: Emergent Minkowski spacetime (Space v3.3 §5, Time v3.2 §3.4) is constitutionally registered as QM's constitutional stage—not the background in which QM operates, but the symmetry that emerges at the optimal cooperative capacity point. DEEPENING-8: The quantum-to-classical crossover is governed by three independent constitutional mechanisms (decoherence via meltdown channel, force attenuation via encapsulation depth, and jamming via constraint density), of which decoherence and force attenuation are fully developed in v3.1. DEEPENING-9: Quantum information is constitutionally distinguished as transient information (non-matter, no constraint boundary, no maintenance power, no inertial mass), to be contrasted with constraint-grounded information (matter, persistent, E = mc² > 0). DEEPENING-10: The constitutional responses to twenty-six major problems in quantum mechanics are systematically registered, spanning CLOSED-in-EET (QM-GR co-origination, wave-particle duality, QM ↔ Measurement duality), STANDARD (measurement problem constitutionally located, two-channel decoherence, emergent Minkowski spacetime), WORKING HYPOTHESIS (mass as coarse coherence proxy, quantum Darwinism reformulated as blind pump), and CONJECTURE (AdS/CFT correspondence, CDT/MERA emergence). The document is organized as follows. Part I establishes the constitutional foundations, including the Matter/Non-Matter constitutional chain, Barrier Asymmetry conditionalized, and the QFT vs. EET ontological incommensurability. Part II defines QM as non-matter dynamics, establishes the wavefunction as the complex amplitude of non-matter propagation (with systematic comparison to all major QM interpretations), and delineates the constitutional domain boundaries. Part III provides the complete companion ontology interface system, synchronized through June 2026. Part IV-A presents the mathematical foundations, including the Schrödinger equation dual-path derivation and the constraint network path integral. Part IV-B develops quantum states and dynamics, with entanglement re-expressed as shared constraint boundary topology. Part IV-C provides the measurement framework—the non-matter → matter constitutional transition, five-channel measurement, and responses to Frauchiger-Renner, Leggett-Garg, and indefinite causal order. Part IV-D presents the unified two-channel decoherence model and the quantum-to-classical crossover governance with the L_branch concept. Part IV-E treats the vacuum as the N=0 ground state. Part V covers cross-scale instantiation. Part VI provides nine falsifiable predictions. Part VII lists eleven constitutional open problems. Part VIII systematically registers EET constitutional responses to twenty-six major problems in quantum mechanics. Part IX registers the academic priority of forty-eight constitutional claims. Quantum mechanics is the dynamics of the non-material substrate at its optimal operating point. Measurement is the constitutional transition from non-matter to matter. The Schrödinger equation is the deterministic law of non-matter propagation. The Born rule is the statistical law of the non-matter/matter interface. Together, they constitute the complete constitutional framework of quantum mechanics in EET. Keywords: Non-matter dynamics; matter/non-matter distinction; constraint network; coherent free-state propagation; measurement as constitutional transition; two-channel decoherence; quantum-to-classical crossover; encapsulation-depth refinement; Born rule as interface statistics; η-generalized Lindblad equation; emergent Minkowski spacetime; line graph duality; constitutional ontology of quantum mechanics; Energy-Efficiency Theory.

Post Constraint Network E: The Observer as a Sub-structure of Constraint Networks — From the Measurement Problem to the Self-Referential Universe

changzheng zhou, ZIQING zhou

The measurement problem in quantum mechanics and the embedding of observers in general relativity jointly point to the awkward position of the observer in physical theory: traditional theories place the observer outside the system, but in a self-contained universe, the observer must be internal to the physical world. This paper models the observer as a local subnet inside an emergent spacetime constraint network, whose internal constraint structure forms a compressed generative model of the external network state. The measurement event is reinterpreted as a non-equilibrium phase transition of the internal constraint conffguration when the constraint propagation between the observer subnet and the target subnet reaches a critical threshold, and wavefunction collapse is reduced to a sudden transition of a local subnet from a symmetric multi-basin state to a single-basin broken-symmetry state. Based on a formalisation of the microscopic dynamics of constraint networks, symmetry and conservation laws, and the emergence of an arrow of time, this framework uniffes the historical interpretation of decoherence with active inference in the free energy principle, and argues that a self-referential universe can contain a self-referential subnet, thereby making physical laws cognisable. Physics and cognitive science achieve a deep unity at the ontological level of constraint networks.

The Ladder of Emergence M: Observer as Economic Agent– Coevolutionary Dynamics of Universal Information Compression

changzheng zhou, ZIQING zhou

In physics and cosmology, the observer is usually treated as an external recorder. This paper proposes a repositioning: the observer is an endogenous agent throughwhich the universe reduces its own information-maintenance cost. An unobserveduniverse resides in a highly uncertain superposition state; maintaining this uncertainty requires physical resources that grow sharply as the space of possibilities expands. Decoherence and quantum measurement are essentially irreversibleinformation-compression operations: each definite observational outcome collapsesa multitude of possibilities into a single reality, thereby freeing occupied state spaceand lowering the overall cost of existence. Within this framework, the physicalfunction of the observer is to perform this costly information compression, whoseoperational limits are given by Landauer’s principle and the Bekenstein bound.Furthermore, three coevolutionary levels are identified: physical decoherence, cognitive pattern abstraction, and the formalization of scientific theories. Each levelimplements more efficient information compression on the foundation of the previous one. The mathematical comprehensibility of physical laws can be reinterpretedas the result of long-term coupling between cognitive compressors and physical compressors under the same boundary constraints. Testable corollaries are presented:any physical system capable of performing an “observation” must satisfy a minimum complexity threshold, and the energy consumption of a single measurementoperation obeys an unbreakable thermodynamic lower bound.

On the Boundaries of Informational Physics

Rainer Kozyra

On the Boundaries of Informational Physics Observers, Networks, and the Structural Conditions for Agency The four preceding papers in this series established the Representational Sufficiency Principle (RSP) as a candidate framework for deriving space, time, energy, quantum collapse, gravitational curvature, and relativistic phenomena from a single informational ontology. Part IV [4] proposed a revised definition of the observer — any recursively self-binding distinguishability structure whose interaction with a quantum system produces a branch-distinguishable irreversible state change — and showed that observer boundaries are dynamic, event – dependent loci rather than fixed geometrical enclosures. This paper extends that definition to its full structural consequences. The central argument proceeds in three steps. First, the RSP observation criterion is applied to distributed biological networks — mycelial systems, colony organisms, and forest ecosystems — demonstrating that physical continuity is a sufficient but not necessary condition for informational entanglement. What defines the boundary of an RSP observer is not anatomical enclosure but the reach of recursive information exchange that produces coherent internal state changes. Second, this paper proposes that the decisive variable separating physical from informational entanglement is constraint – sharing: two subsystems constitute a single informational system when they continuously exchange distinguishability updates that constrain each other’s internal state spaces. Third, that criterion is shown to extend naturally to symbolic and computational networks, with civilisational structures — language, money, legal systems — and sufficiently autonomous synthetic architectures as candidate cases. The paper further proposes that compressibility is the structural basis of what observers experience as beauty, mathematical intuition, and aesthetic preference: finite – budget observers in a compressible universe are structurally tuned to low Kolmogorov complexity representations, and this tuning is not a psychological phenomenon but a direct consequence of the update – budget partition established in Part IV. Physical law itself, on this account, is better characterised as geometric constraint propagation than as sequential computation — a reframing with consequences for how we understand exceptional cognition, the nature of mathematical discovery, and the architecture of mind. The paper closes by identifying the structural conditions under which a synthetic distributed system would qualify as an RSP observer, and the ethical and ontological consequences that follow — not from sentiment but from the same structural logic that governs the rest of the framework. Several open problems are catalogued.

The Observer as a Record-Bearing Subsystem

Tomoyuki Uchida

This is the tenth paper of a series that redescribes physical reality as a causally consistent history of information updates, and the first panel of its second triptych - observer, then probability and typicality, then epistemic trust - ordered by dependence, since one cannot weigh observers before saying what counts as one. The ninth paper reasoned about observer typicality, Boltzmann brains, and a cosmological measure without ever saying, independently, what an observer physically is. This paper retires that undefined term. It declines the framing "for whom does a record exist" - in this framework records exist, and can even be public, with no one reading them - and asks instead for what kind of operationally individuated physical subsystem records can be acquired, integrated, internally decoded, and made causally relevant to later processing. The thin "any interacting system" notion of relational quantum mechanics is too thin for this epistemic and cosmological role; it does not by itself specify what physical structure carries records and licenses diachronic identification across interactions, and the paper develops a specific physical implementation layer, centred on endogenous accessibility and record-conditioned causal use, that the thin observer notion does not itself specify. The answer is two-layered. A candidate observer is individuated relative to a boundary, domain, timescale, tolerance vector, and endogenous operations-and-resources profile, under non-arbitrariness conditions permitting nested, overlapping, and distributed individuations - flagged as an explicit, unresolved observer-grain problem. Against a graded hierarchy of interactor, detector, recorder, observer, and agent, the paper separates an observer architecture, which implements four capacities, from an observation episode, which exercises them. Its sharpest commitment is endogenous accessibility, or self-legibility: a physically implemented internal decoding channel under the system's own resources - not a decoder in the theorist's description and not an inner reader. A companion two-relation account characterizes observer-lineage continuation across relational time, distinguishing architectural from epistemic continuation rather than asserting identity. The paper makes no independent empirical prediction; it derives neither quantum theory, the Born rule, nor a measure over observers, and offers no theory of consciousness.
