Observation of Nonclassical Photon Statistics due to Quantum Interference

Y. J. Lu, Z. Y. Ou

Phase-dependent photon statistics is observed in the mixed field of a narrow band two-photon source and a coherent field. At a certain phase, the nonclassical effect of photon antibunching occurs while at another the photon bunching effect appears. Furthermore, we observed a novel nonclassical phenomenon that exhibits more complex structure. The different features in photon statistics are attributed to a two-photon interference effect.

Nonclassical two-photon interference between independent telecommunication light pulses converted by difference-frequency generation

Rikizo Ikuta, Toshiki Kobayashi, Hiroshi Kato +9 more

We experimentally demonstrated the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between two photons after visible-to-telecommunication wavelength conversion. In the experiment, we prepared a heralded single photon by using spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) and the other photon from a weak laser source at 780 nm. We converted the wavelength of both photons to the telecommunication wavelength of 1522 nm by using difference-frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate, and then observed the HOM interference between the photons. The observed visibility is $0.76\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12$ which clearly shows the nonclassical interference of the two photons. The high-visibility interference is an important step for fiber-based quantum communications of photons generated from visible-photon emitters.

Experimental evidence for nonclassical fourth-order interferences in the quasielastic light scattering of water

Ulrich K. Krieger, F. Aurich, C. A. Chatzidimitriou‐Dreismann

Experimental results of quasielastic light scattering on a water-HCl mixture at T=297 K are reported, which demonstrate the existence of a different kind of nonclassical two-photon (fourth-order) correlation, in the absence of second-order interferences. The normalized two-photon correlation function ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}^{(2)}$(1,2) shows an oscillation with an amplitude of about 25%, depending on the relative position of the two detectors and the scattering source. The equivalent measurement on ${\mathrm{CS}}_{2}$ shows no such effect. The possible physical significance of the observations is briefly mentioned.
