Abstract

We present a robust single-branch scheme for transferring a 698 nm clock laser to the telecommunication band using a dual-pitch periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, enabling detection of the carrier-envelope offset and beat note at 698 nm and eliminating intermediate lasers.

Polarization-independent photon up-conversion with a single lithium niobate waveguide

Shuhao Wang, Ni Yao, Wei Fang +1 more

We propose a polarization-independent up-conversion protocol for single-photon detection at telecom band with a single thin-film periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. By choosing the proper waveguide parameters, the waveguide dispersion can compensate the crystal birefringence so that quasi-phase-matching conditions for transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes can be simultaneously fulfilled with single poling period. With this scheme, randomly-polarized single photons at 1550 nm can be up-converted with a normalized conversion efficiency of 163.8%/W cm2.

Upconversion single-photon detectors based on integrated periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides [Invited]

Fei Ma, Longyue Liang, Jiu-Peng Chen +6 more

We demonstrate upconversion single-photon detectors based on integrated periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides that incorporate two mode filters and a directional coupler. The two mode filters are optimized for the fiber-waveguide coupling efficiencies for 1550 and 1950 nm, respectively, while the directional coupler plays the role of wavelength combiner, making the overall system portable and low cost. The two wavelengths pump each other in our detection system. We achieve detection efficiencies of 28% for 1550 nm and 27% for 1950 nm, respectively. This scheme provides an efficient integrated single-photon detection method for any two well-separated spectral bands in the whole low-loss range of lithium niobate waveguides.

Efficient and low-noise single-photon detection in 1550 nm communication band by frequency upconversion in periodically poled LiNbO_3 waveguides

Hidehiko Kamada, Masaki Asobe, Toshimori Honjo +5 more

We demonstrate 1500 nm band single-photon detection with low dark-count noise and a potentially high efficiency, which may allow long distance and high-bit-rate quantum key distribution. By developing frequency upconversion devices based on periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides, which are specifically designed to use a pump wavelength longer than that of communication-band photons, we completely eliminate the dark-count noise caused by parasitic nonlinear processes in the waveguide. We observed an internal conversion efficiency as high as 40% and demonstrated scaling down to the single photon level while maintaining a background dark-count rate of 10(2)s(-1).

Single-to-Multiple Channel Wavelength Conversions and Tuning of Picosecond Pulses in Quasi-Phase-Matched Waveguides

Jian Wang, Junqiang Sun, Luo Chuan-hong +3 more

We report the single-to-multiple channel wavelength conversions of 1.57-ps pulses based on cascaded second-harmonic generation and difference frequency generation in quasi-phase-matched periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides. For single-to-single channel wavelength conversion, no external cavity laser is required with use of a fibre ring laser. The conversion efficiency is about -21.44 dB. The converted idler wavelength can be tuned from 1526.4 nm to 1537.5 nm as the lasing pump wavelength is varied from 1566.1 nm to 1555.0 nm. By employing several input pumps, tunable single-to-dual and single-to-triple channel wavelength conversions are experimentally demonstrated.

Optical frequency division by 3 of 532??nm in periodically poled lithium niobate with a double grating

P. Nee, N. C. Wong

Optical frequency division by 3 of 532 nm is demonstrated by back-to-back difference-frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal with a double grating. The first grating generates 1596-nm light from 532- and 798-nm inputs, and the second grating mixes the 798-nm input and the 1596-nm output from the first grating to produce a second 1596-nm output. The beat signal between the two 1596-nm outputs is detected and frequency stabilized to yield the 3:1 frequency ratio.
