ANALYTICAL STUDY OF OPTICAL BI-STABILITY OF A SINGLE-BUS RESONATOR BASED ON INGAAS MICRO-RING ARRAY

M.H. Mohammadzadeh, Ali Rostami

In this paper, for the first time to our knowledge, we investigate the optical bi-stability in a compact parallel array of micro- ring resonators with 5μm radius, induced by optical nonlinearity. Due to the nature of perfect light confinement, resonance and accumulation process in a ring resonator, optical nonlinear effects, even at small optical power of a few milliwatts in this structure are observable. Different optical applications such as: all-optical switching, memory, logic gates and modulators, due to optical bi-stability in a ring resonator are possible. By using of compound semiconductors, instead of silicon that have weakly nonlinear optical properties, we improve the performance of ring-resonator based devices. Also by using of a polymer cladding layer with negative thermo-optic coefficient, we have eliminate the temperature created nonlinearity which is a very slow process, so the switching speed of a few MHz increases to several tens of GHz. With plotting the transfer function of the resonator, a hysteresis loop in a few milliwatts is observed, that by using of ring resonator array, although the bandwidth is reduced, but the width of the hysteresis loop and resolution between both steady state

OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN A NONLINEAR SOA-BASED FIBER RING RESONATOR

Pablo A. Costanzo‐Caso, Yiye Jin, Sergio Granieri +1 more

A novel optical inverted bistable switch based on a nonlinear fiber ring resonator (FRR) containing a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has been analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. Optical bistability is obtained due to the transmission characteristics of the resonator and the SOA's gain characteristics. A complete theoretical analysis and supporting simulations are presented. A prototype is demonstrated using commercial optical components. Experimental results show switching performance with falling times lower than 10 ns.

Virtual-State Model for Analyzing Electro-Optical Modulation in Ring Resonators

Zhengyi Wan, Qizhuang Cen, Yuedi Ding +6 more

Ring resonators play a crucial role in optical communication and quantum technology applications. However, these devices lack a simple and intuitive theoretical model to describe their electro-optical modulation. When the resonance frequency is rapidly modulated, the filtering and modulation within a ring resonator become physically intertwined, making it difficult to analyze the complex physical processes involved. We address this by proposing an analytical solution for electro-optic ring modulators based on the concept of a "virtual state." This approach equates a lightwave passing through a dynamic ring modulator to one excited to a virtual state by a cumulative phase and then returning to the real state after exiting the static ring. Our model simplifies the independent analysis of the intertwined physical processes, enhancing its versatility in analyzing various incident signals and modulation formats. Experimental results, including resonant and detuning modulation, align with the numerical simulation of our model. Notably, our findings indicate that the dynamic modulation of the ring resonator under detuning driving approximates phase modulation.
