Abstract

A novel optical inverted bistable switch based on a nonlinear fiber ring resonator (FRR) containing a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has been analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. Optical bistability is obtained due to the transmission characteristics of the resonator and the SOA's gain characteristics. A complete theoretical analysis and supporting simulations are presented. A prototype is demonstrated using commercial optical components. Experimental results show switching performance with falling times lower than 10 ns.

Optical bistability in a nonlinear SOA-based fiber ring resonator

Pablo A. Costanzo‐Caso, Yiye Jin, Sergio Granieri +1 more

A novel optical inverted bistable switch based on a nonlinear fiber ring resonator (FRR), which contains a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in the loop, have been analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. The optical bistability phenomenon is obtained due to the combined nonlinear effects of the transmission characteristics of the resonator and the SOA's gain property. A complete theoretical analysis and supporting simulations are presented. A working prototype is build using commercial optical components. Experimental results show switching speed in tens of MHz with rising and falling times lower than 10 ns. Limitations in switching speed are caused by the length of the fiber loop. Therefore, improvements in operating frequencies can be increased up to GHz range if the length of the loop is reduced to the order of centimeters.

COUPLER-LOSS AND COUPLING-COEFFICIENT DEPENDENCE OF BISTABILITY AND INSTABILITY IN A FIBER RING RESONATOR: NONLINEAR BEHAVIORS

Preecha P. Yupapin, P. Saeung, W. Suwancharoen

In this paper we demonstrate the dynamic simulation of light traveling in a nonlinear fiber optic ring resonator (FORR) with a single coupler. The mathematical relations describing the nonlinear characteristics of the FORR are derived from light transmission theory in linear optical systems. Optical nonlinear phenomena such as bifurcation and chaos are investigated for optical bistability and the Ikeda instability. It is found that for the Ikeda instability of light inside a FORR, the ring-cavity lifetime is much longer than the Kerr-effect response time of the fiber ring. Transmission curves of bistability and instability are shown as a function of the coupler insertion losses (γ) and the coupling coefficients (κ).

Optical bistability in fiber ring resonator containing an erbium doped fiber amplifier and quantum dot doped fiber saturable absorber

Sara Tofighi, Somayeh Safari Farshemi, Batool Sajad +2 more

In this paper we study the optical bistability in a double coupler fiber ring resonator which consists of an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in half part of the fiber ring and a quantum dot doped fiber (QDF) saturable absorber in the other half. The bistability is provided by the QDF section of the ring resonator. The EDFA is employed to reduce the switching power. The transmitted and reflected bistability characteristics are investigated. It is shown that the switching power for this new bistable device is less than 10 mW.

Optical Bistability in a Traveling-Wave SOA Connected to a DFB Laser Diode: Theory and Experiment

Wouter D’Oosterlinck, Geert I. Morthier, Roel Baets +1 more

We investigate the bistable response of a traveling-wave semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) connected bidirectionally to a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode. By contrast to dispersive DFB amplifiers, bistability is possible for a broad wavelength range of the injected optical signal. A theoretical analysis clarifies the origin of the phenomenon and the conditions under which it occurs. Numerical simulations and experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis. Experimentally obtained step heights up to 25 dB and widths of the bistability domain of 1-4 dB have been found

An analytical study on bistability of Fabry-Perot semiconductor optical amplifiers

Gang Wang, Shuqiang Chen, Huajun Yang

Abstract Optical bistabilities have been considered to be useful for sensor applications. As a typical nonlinear device, Fabry-Perot semiconductor optical amplifiers (FPSOAs) exhibit bistability under certain conditions. In this paper, the bistable characteristics in FPSOAs are investigated theoretically. Based on Adams’s relationship between the incident optical intensity I in and the z -independent average intracavity intensity I av , an analytical expression of the bistable loop width in SOAs is derived. Numerical simulations confirm the accuracy of the analytical result.

Reflective optical bistability and nonlinear switching in a 1550-nm vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA)

Antonio Hurtado, Ian D. Henning, M.J. Adams

We report experimental measurements of Optical Bistability (OB) and nonlinear switching in a 1550 nm-Vertical-Cavity Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (VCSOA) operated in reflection and biased below and above its threshold current. Two different types of OB and nonlinear switching, anticlockwise and clockwise, have been observed in both the optical power and wavelength domain. The influence of important parameters including the bias current, the initial wavelength detuning and the optical input power has also been studied. The existence of diverse forms of OB and nonlinear switching in a VCSOA operated in reflection opens the door for the development of inverting and non-inverting logic gates, using, respectively, the anticlockwise or the clockwise nonlinear switching transitions appearing in the VCSOA under external optical injection.
