Abstract

A novel optical inverted bistable switch based on a nonlinear fiber ring resonator (FRR), which contains a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in the loop, have been analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. The optical bistability phenomenon is obtained due to the combined nonlinear effects of the transmission characteristics of the resonator and the SOA's gain property. A complete theoretical analysis and supporting simulations are presented. A working prototype is build using commercial optical components. Experimental results show switching speed in tens of MHz with rising and falling times lower than 10 ns. Limitations in switching speed are caused by the length of the fiber loop. Therefore, improvements in operating frequencies can be increased up to GHz range if the length of the loop is reduced to the order of centimeters.

Frequency domain bistability of tunable laser with frequency-dependent feedback

Lixue Chen

Traditional frequency domain optical bistability(FDOB) devices with hybrid electro-optical feedback have low response speed and high noise fluctuations.Hence,a novel tunable laser FDOB device with an all-optical feedback was developed using a nonlinear fiber ring resonator as the frequency feedback element.Parametric equations of optical bistability were established according to the system's response to nonlinear process and frequency-dependent feedback.Based on the parametric equations, the characteristics and controllable operations of FDOB were analyzed. The switching response speed of the optical bistability was discussed. The analysis showed that the proposed all-fiber laser bistability device can effectively achieve intensity-driven and gain-driven optical bistability. The position and shape of the bistability hysteresis curve vary with the adjustment of gain or loss in the fiber ring resonator, hence realizing the controlled all-optical bistability operations.Sudden jumping of optical bistability in the frequency domain can be applied to monitor laser wavelength shift and achieve sensoring. The optical bistability response time is in the nanosecond order of magnitude and bistability switching is ultrafast.

Optical Bistability in a Traveling-Wave SOA Connected to a DFB Laser Diode: Theory and Experiment

Wouter D’Oosterlinck, Geert I. Morthier, Roel Baets +1 more

We investigate the bistable response of a traveling-wave semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) connected bidirectionally to a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode. By contrast to dispersive DFB amplifiers, bistability is possible for a broad wavelength range of the injected optical signal. A theoretical analysis clarifies the origin of the phenomenon and the conditions under which it occurs. Numerical simulations and experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis. Experimentally obtained step heights up to 25 dB and widths of the bistability domain of 1-4 dB have been found

Optical bistability in fiber ring resonator containing an erbium doped fiber amplifier and quantum dot doped fiber saturable absorber

Sara Tofighi, Somayeh Safari Farshemi, Batool Sajad +2 more

In this paper we study the optical bistability in a double coupler fiber ring resonator which consists of an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in half part of the fiber ring and a quantum dot doped fiber (QDF) saturable absorber in the other half. The bistability is provided by the QDF section of the ring resonator. The EDFA is employed to reduce the switching power. The transmitted and reflected bistability characteristics are investigated. It is shown that the switching power for this new bistable device is less than 10 mW.

Dynamic behavior of reflection optical bistability in a nonlinear fiber ring resonator

Kazuhiko Ogusu

We present an analysis of the dynamic behavior of a nonlinear fiber ring resonator when an optical pulse with an arbitrary shape envelope is incident into it through a fiber directional coupler. The transient analysis is based on the extension of a well-known multiple-beam interference method to non-linear transmission problems. The steady-state analyses reported so far predict that the ring resonator exhibits reflection optical bistability in the input-output characteristics under appropriate conditions. But, our transient analysis shows that a nearly periodical oscillation of the transmitted power always takes place at a suitable initial detuning when the resonator has no loss or a small loss. It seems that the present instability is caused by the repetition of accumulation and release of the power in the ring resonator. We can obtain a bistable hysteresis loop by introducing a loss to the directional coupler. The dynamic behavior of bistability in a nonlinear fiber ring resonator with coupler loss is then investigated. It is found that a remarkable undershoot and overshoot occur in the switch-off curve and switch-on curve, respectively.

An analytical study on bistability of Fabry-Perot semiconductor optical amplifiers

Gang Wang, Shuqiang Chen, Huajun Yang

Abstract Optical bistabilities have been considered to be useful for sensor applications. As a typical nonlinear device, Fabry-Perot semiconductor optical amplifiers (FPSOAs) exhibit bistability under certain conditions. In this paper, the bistable characteristics in FPSOAs are investigated theoretically. Based on Adams’s relationship between the incident optical intensity I in and the z -independent average intracavity intensity I av , an analytical expression of the bistable loop width in SOAs is derived. Numerical simulations confirm the accuracy of the analytical result.
