Generation of photon pairs in time-lapse entangled quantum states by spontaneous four-wave mixing in nonlinear fiber-optic ring resonators

Quantum entanglement has been an extremely active field of research, both theoretically and experimentally. Studies on entanglement are fundamental to improving our basic understanding of quantum mechanics. As our understanding of the phenomenon grows, so does interest in using it to advance various technological fields: communications, computing, and sensing, to name just a few. It is now known that entangled photon pairs can be generated through a process known as Spontaneous Four-Wave Mixing (SFWM). In this paper, we report the generation of entangled photon pairs in time intervals by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a nonlinear fiber optic ring resonator. The requirements for efficient SFWM are quite similar to those for classical FWM, but they require even greater precision, especially for quantum applications. To achieve a measurable pair generation rate, a high-intensity pump laser is essential. The nonlinear medium must have high nonlinearity and confinement. This technique is compatible with contemporary fiber, enabling compact, low-cost, and scalable implementations such as quantum memories.

Discrete Frequency Entangled Photon Pair Generation Based on Silicon Micro-ring Cavities

Jing Suo, Wei Zhang, Shuai Dong +2 more

In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a scheme to generate discrete frequency entangled photon pairs based on a silicon micro-ring resonator. The resonator is placed in a Sagnac fiber loop. Stimulated by two pump lights at two different resonance wavelengths of the resonator, photon pairs at another two resonance wavelengths are generated along two opposite directions in the fiber loop, by the nondegenerate spontaneous four wave mixing in the resonator. Their states are superposed and interfered at the output ports of the fiber loop to generate frequency entangled photon pairs. On the other hand, since the pump lights come from two continuous wave lasers, energy-time entanglement is an intrinsic property of the generated photon pairs. The entanglements on frequency and energy-time are demonstrated experimentally by the experiments of spatial quantum beating and Franson-type interference, respectively, showing that the silicon micro-ring resonators are ideal candidates to realize complex photonic quantum state generation.

Cooperative Spontaneous Four-wave Mixing in Single-channel and Dualchannel Sequences of Side-coupled Ring Resonators

Amideddin Mataji‐Kojouri, Massimo Borghi, Federico Andrea Sabattoli +9 more

Cooperative photon pair generation by Spontaneous Four-Wave Mixing (SFWM) process in singlechannel and dual-channel side-coupled ring resonator sequences is investigated. Our analysis shows that superlinear growth of generation rate with respect to the number of rings is possible even in presence of loss. Experimental evidence of super-SFWM is provided by comparing individual and collective generation rates obtained from a dual-channel ring resonator sequence. The results are in good agreement with theory and suggest that high photon pair generation rates can be achieved from integrated silicon ring resonator sequences without initiating nonlinear absorption processes.
