Strategizing Theory and Practice

Global Quantum Technology Market: Current State and Strategic Development Prospects

Abstract

Quantum technologies include two key high-tech areas: communications and computing. Commercialization of quantum solutions depends on the strategy of managing the corporate ecosystems, i.e., developers and consumers of innovative products. To identify future leaders of the quantum technology ecosystem, the authors studied the medium-term scientific and economic indicators of 150 large companies. Software and hardware developers (Toshiba, Huawei, etc.) are more likely to become technological leaders in quantum communications than service providers (British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, etc.). Former leaders of electronic computer market also strive for leadership in quantum computing (IBM, Intel). Some companies have projects in both areas; for instance, Amazon, NVidia, Cisco, and NTT can become a link in the synergy of computing and communications, especially when it comes to the quantum Internet. Such industrial, logistics, and financial companies as Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Honda, JP Morgan, Credit Agricole, Mitsui, Airbus, and Mitsubishi focus on piloting quantum algorithms. This research may be of interest to Russian organizations responsible for the strategic development of quantum technologies. Domestic communications and computing require new ecosystem companies with extensive experience in innovative R&D.

Quantum computing, big tech, and start-ups: A market assessment

Advait Deshpande

This paper presents a formative market assessment of the quantum computing landscape in terms of market readiness of the technologies and the reported levels of investments. The findings presented in this paper are based on a quick scan of available literature combined with a perceptual map of the state-of-play. The paper considers the role of ‘big tech’ companies, the start-up ecosystem, and funding by nation states to identify key implications for the future of quantum computing developments. It highlights that although quantum computing technologies offer scope to revolutionise computing hardware and software, the development of a universal quantum computer will require breakthroughs in several areas including improvements in the quality of qubits, error correction, and demonstrable set of practical applications.

Роман КОРЖ

The article examines the impact of quantum technologies on innovation processes in the global economy. It analyzes the critical aspects of integrating quantum technologies in various sectors of the economy, particularly in the financial, health care, production, and IT spheres. Theoretical models and empirical data confirming how quantum technologies can accelerate innovation processes, increase research efficiency, and create new economic opportunities are considered. The article also provides practical recommendations for strategic planning and management of innovation processes in the conditions of the quantum revolution. Special attention is paid to the importance of an interdisciplinary approach and cooperation between business and the state. The author noted that the modern economy is on the threshold of a new era, where quantum technologies play a decisive role, which represents a new class of tools capable of radically changing traditional approaches to data processing, security, and computing. Quantum computers, quantum cryptography and quantum communication open opportunities for the economy that can accelerate the development of new materials, optimize logistics chains and increase the level of data security. At the same time, the article highlights the need to develop global standards in the field of quantum technologies. The results of the research will contribute to a better understanding of the potential of quantum technologies to stimulate innovation and increase the competitiveness of the economy. Keywords: quantum technologies, global economy, innovation processes, quantum cryptography, quantum computing, quantum modeling, quantum communication, economic models, quantum algorithms, cyber security, logistics optimization, risk management, economic growth, financial markets, health care, production, quantum networks, development strategies, digital economy, technological revolution.

A Deep Inside Quantum Technology Industry Trends and Future Implications

Dedy Septono Catur Putranto, Rini Wisnu Wardhani, Janghyun Ji +1 more

Quantum technology has garnered considerable attention for its transformative potential across various industries since the early 2000s, precipitating a surge in quantum start-ups and substantial investments worldwide. However, comprehensive research on quantum technology in industries, particularly start-ups in the quantum field, remains limited. This study analyzes a dataset of 1,200 quantum start-ups from 40 countries, specifically focusing on 430 notable active start-ups. The analysis provides a thorough perspective on the industry’s progress, including trends in growth, geographical distribution, industry categorization, and investment patterns. The study categorizes start-ups into five domains: quantum computing, communication, sensing, hardware, and software. The analysis further captures the progress made by ten prominent quantum start-ups, six major technology companies, and quantum consortia regarding their technological innovations and strategic partnerships. We provide a comparative analysis of prior research to identify current conditions and future implications validated by notable studies, focusing on key parameters such as dataset scope, geographical distribution, growth trends, industry categorization, taxonomy, main interests in quantum fields, key players, and ecosystem identification. This approach underscores the dynamic growth of the quantum industry, which will drive future advancements.

QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES ARE A GLOBAL CHALLENGE, REQUIRING ANOTHER REVOLUTION OF METHODSPROCESSING AND TRANSMISSION OF INFORMATION

Bezhan Sh. Sobirov, Timur T. Karamergenov, Н. А. Северцев +1 more

Background. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that today one of the most serious fundamental challenges for technology companies is that the needs for computing power are constantly growing. The business environment is increasingly moving towards a new computing paradigm. Quantum technologies may be one of the answers to this challenge. The purpose of the study is to assess the current state of quantum computing and determine the direction of development of this area, as well as obstacles and limitations in the use of quantum technologies. Materials and methods. The empirical basis of the study was research from the AIRI Institute of Artificial Intelligence, as well as research from CaixaBank, TotalEnergies, Quantinuum, authors B.G. Ibrahimov, A.O. Orujov, A.H. Hasanov, K.M. Tahirova in the article "Research and analysis efficiency fiber optical communication lines using quantum technology". Results. The author of this study presents the main advantage of quantum computing, noting that they are based on completely different principles than traditional ones, and will use their own hardware and mathematical base. The study presents the results of research and experiments in the field of quantum computing achieved by oil companies. The work done and the experience gained made it possible to formulate the key challenges for the development of quantum computing in industrial companies. Conclusions. The practical significance of this research lies in the fact that it will allow the business community, as well as government authorities, to develop a development strategy in the new computing paradigm. Will allow companies to develop effective strategies when solving optimization problems and advanced computing architectures.

Quantum computing for market research

Laura Sáez‐Ortuño, Rubén Huertas-García, Santiago Forgas‐Coll +2 more

The digital ecosystem continues to expand around the world and is revolutionising the way markets are researched. Indeed, consumer experiences are advertised and disseminated through so many channels and media that it has become a major challenge for researchers and marketing practitioners to collect, process and generate valuable information to support strategic and operational decisions. In this article, the authors explore how advances in quantum computing, which can be used to process huge amounts of data quickly and accurately, could offer an unprecedented opportunity for researchers to address the challenges of the digital ecosystem. Three studies are presented to define the state of the art and future expectations of quantum computing in market research and business. By means of a bibliometric analysis of 209 publications and a content analysis of the 30 highest-impact articles, we describe the present landscape, and also forecast the future with the help of in-depth interviews with eight experts. The findings reveal that the US and China are at the forefront of scientific development, but the contributions from four other countries (India, the UK, Canada and Spain) are also in double figures. However, graphical analysis identifies four poles of development: the US orbit, which includes Canada and Spain; the Chinese orbit, which includes India; the UK orbit; and the Australian orbit. In terms of expectations, the experts agree on the opportunities offered by quantum computing, but there is less consensus as to how long it will take to develop.
