Abstract

The rapid evolution of communication networks to 5G/6G has introduced significant challenges, particularly in ensuring data security, low latency, high throughput, efficient energy consumption, dynamic access to multiple connection types, and managing the influx of connected devices. Quantum communication, leveraging entangled states like the perfect W-state, offers a promising solution with its high degree of entanglement, secure information transmission, and resilience against decoherence. However, practical applications and experimental validations remain limited, especially regarding the integration with Local Operations and Classical Communication (LOCC) protocols. Additionally, optimizing perfect W-state-based communication protocols for the splitting and sharing of quantum information has been scarcely explored. This article presents a Quantum Information Sharing and Splitting (QISS) protocol that integrates perfect W-states with LOCC to enhance 5G and 6G communication. Using the Eagle r3 processor based on superconducting qubits, our experiments demonstrated a fidelity of 0.82 ± 0.02 for the perfect W-state circuit and 0.55 ± 0.03 for the integrated W-state + LOCC in the QISS communication prototype. These findings, quantified through Quantum State Tomography, significantly improve communication security, network densification, and effectiveness. Furthermore, our research addresses existing gaps in quantum communication implementation, paving the way for scalable quantum networks and advanced encryption methods. This work marks a substantial step towards secure and efficient data transmission in next-generation communication systems.

Can Quantum Semantic Communication Intrinsically Exhibit Resilience in 6G Networks?

Vignesh Raman, Nikhitha Nunavath, Riccardo Bassoli +1 more

As the world outgrows the capabilities of 5G networks, the search for the next technical standard — 6G — accelerates, promising unprecedented connectivity, capability, and adaptability. However, optimizing network performance to simultaneously satisfy purported multiple key performance indicators — latency, energy efficiency, resilience, trustworthiness etc. — is a herculean struggle. Traditional Shannon-based communication models struggle to address and overcome the complex tradeoffs required in ultra-reliable, low-latency, and secure network architectures. It is no surprise, then, that emerging paradigms such as semantic communication, goal-oriented communication, and quantum communication are being integrated into telecommunication research. Unlike classical communication, semantic communication focuses on transmitting meaning more so than merely raw data; additionally, quantum semantic communication leverages quantum mechanics to further optimize information processing and security. In this paper, we conceptually investigate whether these theoretical technological advancements, when interpreted in the right context, can intrinsically enhance resilience in 6G networks.

Quantum network applications in 6G paradigm

Chitra Shukla, Junaid ur Rehman, Symeon Chatzinotas

Abstract Over the past four decades, quantum communication has evolved as a dynamic interdisciplinary field, advancing theoretical concepts and practical implementations. This article provides a concise overview focusing on recent progress in different aspects of secure quantum communication and quantum computation protocols, which can be applied to several real-world applications in quantum networks. These protocols guarantee unconditional security while enhancing communication rates and computation capabilities by harnessing quantum advantages. We also explore the role of non-terrestrial networks in quantum applications, with a focus on quantum technologies such as quantum key distribution and beyond, suitable for satellite-based applications. These technologies can contribute to future extensions of the quantum internet across intercontinental territories, connecting complex quantum network applications. Further, we delve into discussing the integration of quantum communication into 6G technology. The key innovation of this article lies in integrating quantum communication into 6G networks through a novel system-level simulation framework. 6G-enabled quantum networks are expected to meet the high demands on ubiquitous coverage, data rate, latency, and energy consumption. To address these issues, we design and evaluate four traffic demand scenarios using numerical simulation, illustrating how superdense coding doubles the data transmission rate and fulfills the high traffic demands on data rate, while under low traffic demand, entanglement resources can be reserved for future applications. Specifically, our investigation demonstrates how resource utilization adapts to different traffic demands, with adjustments based on available resources and practical constraints, evaluated over an ideal noise-free communication channel. The proof-of-work simulation is implemented using Python and is based on the system model we designed for varying traffic demands to pave the way for efficient quantum networks and gain deeper insights into their feasibility with available resources.
