Absorption of Ultrashort Laser Pulses in an Optically Dense Medium

Abstract

Abstract In the framework of the consistent microscopic theory, universal analytic expressions describing absorption of laser pulses of an arbitrary duration in an optically dense medium have been derived, and their limiting cases have been considered. For the Gaussian and Lorentzian spectral profiles, simple expressions have been obtained for the absorption coefficient as a function of dimensionless parameters (optical thickness of the medium, the pulse duration and carrier frequency). Based on the performed calculations, the effect of the optical thickness of the medium on the dependences of the absorption coefficient on the pulse parameters has been revealed.

Interaction of Ultrashort Laser Pulses with Atoms in Plasmas

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, Valerii S. Lisitsa

The paper is devoted to the investigation of the absorption of ultrashort laser pulses on atoms in plasmas, accounting for the different broadening mechanisms of atomic resonant transitions. The analysis is made in terms of the absorption probability during the entire interaction between the laser pulse and atom. Attention is mainly given to dependence of probability upon the pulse duration and the carrier frequency of the pulse. The results are presented via dimensionless parameters and functions describing the effect of finite pulse duration on atomic spectra for different broadening mechanisms, namely Doppler, Voigt, Holtsmark and their combinations, as well as the Stark line broadening of Rydberg atomic lines.

The shortening of the laser pulses in a medium with reverse saturable absorption

Vladislav Yu. Gribkov, Rimma Sh. Zatrudina

A model of the laser pulse propagation through a medium with a special mechanism of optical limiting - the effect of the reverse saturated absorption - was proposed. It is shown that the propagation through three-level medium with reverse saturable absorption leads to decrease duration and transformation of the profile of the pulse. Analytical expressions for the maximum intensity shift and change of duration of the laser pulse were obtained.

Absorption of Ultrashort Electromagnetic Pulses on Broadened Dipole Transitions

S. Yu. Svita, Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

The study is devoted to the theoretical analysis of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses (USP) absorption on broadened dipole transitions. Calculations are made in the frame of perturbation theory with the use of the basic formula for energy absorbed during all time of the action of USP on dipole transition. Dependences of absorbed energy upon pulse duration and carrier frequency are obtained and analyzed for different types of spectral line shape and USP parameters.

Theory of Absorption Profiles of Molecular Transitions in Dense Media

H. Paerschke, K.‐E. Süsse, D.‐G. Welsch

Abstract Within the framework of quantum theory the radiationless phase relaxation of a molecular transition in a dense medium is described by an integro‐differential equation. From the Fourier transform of this equation formulas are derived for calculating the corresponding absorption profiles. For the case that the acoustic phonons of the medium are responsible for the phase relaxation a detailed discussion of the resulting absorption profiles is given.

Pulse transformation and time-frequency filtering with electromagnetically induced transparency

R. N. Shakhmuratov, J. Odeurs

A simple analytical solution for the propagation of a weak Gaussian pulse in a dense absorptive medium with electromagnetically induced transparency is found. This solution is applied to the analysis of three regimes: (1) and (2) the pulse spectrum is narrower than the transparency window [which is narrow (1) or wide (2) with respect to the width of the absorption line] and (3) the pulse spectrum is broader than the transparency window. It is shown that the pulse maintains its area in all three regimes and maintains its Gaussian shape but narrows in spectrum in regime 1. In regime 2, the pulse begins to distort after a certain distance. In regime 3, the pulse is split into two parts. One part is an adiabatic part with a spectrum defined by the effective width of the transparency window for a thick medium and the other is an oscillating nonadiabatic part of short duration. The adiabatic part propagates slowly and the nonadiabatic part propagates with a velocity close to the speed of light. Thus in regime 3, the medium acts as a time-frequency filter, separating the narrow and wide spectrum components of the pulse in time at the output of the absorber.

Propagation of a Gaussian Light Pulse through an Anomalous Dispersion Medium

C. G. B. Garrett, D. E. McCumber

The propagation of a Gaussian light pulse through a medium having a positive or negative absorption line is examined. Analytical approximations are obtained for the case where the spectral width of the pulse is much smaller than that of the line. It is shown that the pulse remains substantially Gaussian and unchanged in width for many exponential absorption depths, and that the locus of instants of maximum amplitude follows the classical expression for the group velocity, even if this is greater than the velocity of light, or negative. Numerical calculations have been used to examine what happens beyond the limit of usefulness of the analytical approximations.
