Abstract

In this paper we find spatial and average dependences of the optical medium thickness, spectral profile and absorption line width on the initial thickness of the medium and the ratio between the limiting velocity of self-similar expansion and the thermal velocity of atoms.

Absorption of Ultrashort Laser Pulses in an Optically Dense Medium

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko

Abstract In the framework of the consistent microscopic theory, universal analytic expressions describing absorption of laser pulses of an arbitrary duration in an optically dense medium have been derived, and their limiting cases have been considered. For the Gaussian and Lorentzian spectral profiles, simple expressions have been obtained for the absorption coefficient as a function of dimensionless parameters (optical thickness of the medium, the pulse duration and carrier frequency). Based on the performed calculations, the effect of the optical thickness of the medium on the dependences of the absorption coefficient on the pulse parameters has been revealed.

Laser cooling of an expanding ultracold plasma

N. Ya. Shaparev, Nikolai Shaparev

We analyze the resonance absorption spectrum of ions in an expanding ultracold spherical plasma. It is shown that the spectrum width is controlled by the highest expansion velocity at the sphere boundary. As the expansion velocity grows, the initial optical thickness of the medium decreases and the medium becomes transparent. We suggest a broadband laser radiation in the red absorption spectrum of ions be used to decelerate ions in an expanding plasma in order to achieve crystallization.

Experimental Realization of an Exact Solution to the Vlasov Equations for an Expanding Plasma

S. Laha, Priya Gupta, Clayton E. Simien +4 more

We study the expansion of ultracold neutral plasmas in the regime in which inelastic collisions are negligible. The plasma expands due to the thermal pressure of the electrons, and for an initial spherically symmetric Gaussian density profile, the expansion is self-similar. Measurements of the plasma size and ion kinetic energy using fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy show that the expansion follows an analytic solution of the Vlasov equations for an adiabatically expanding plasma.

Rigorous theory of thin-vapor-layer linear optical properties: The case of specular reflection of atoms colliding with the walls

Andrei Ermolaev, T. A. Vartanyan

The theory of the thin-vapor-layer linear optical properties is presented for the case of specular reflection of atoms colliding with the walls. The effects of light absorption and the shift in the resonance frequency are taken into account by means of self-consistent calculation of the field and polarization in a gaseous medium. The obtained formulas reproduce the complex dependence of the spectral line profile on the gas layer thickness and allow one to determine numerically the exact values of the ``blueshift.'' It was shown that, despite the low vapor concentration, the resonance shift is on the same order of magnitude as the width of the spectral lines.
