Abstract

Abstract Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) co‐magnetometers are advanced quantum sensors capable of measuring angular velocity for inertial navigation. Within the Rb‐Xe atomic ensemble, Rb atoms absorb polarized light, decreasing electron spin polarization as the light travels greater distances. This attenuation causes a gradient in Rb spin polarization that severely affects atomic relaxation characteristics and degrades NMR sensors’ performance. Considering atomic diffusion motion, a theoretical simulation model is developed and the spatial distribution of electron spin polarization under the encounter‐propagating dual‐beam configuration is simulated. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed dual‐beam scheme achieves a more uniform distribution of electron polarization within the atomic vapor cell. Experiments reveal an 18% enhancement in 129 Xe nuclear spin polarization using the dual‐beam scheme compared to the conventional single‐beam. Through the Fermi contact interaction between optically pumped Rb and Xe atoms, a more uniform spatial distribution of Rb spin polarization reduces the gradient relaxation of Xe atoms and its depolarization effects, thereby significantly enhancing the macroscopic Xe spin polarization and the signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) of NMR sensors. This study presents a new method for improving atomic polarization, significantly enhancing the performance of quantum sensors.

Optical magnetic combination method for suppressing the Rb polarization-induced magnetic gradient in Rb-Xe NMR co-magnetometers

Tengyue Wang, Jinpeng Peng, Zhanchao Liu +2 more

The Rb polarization-induced magnetic field gradient affects the Xe nuclear spin relaxation properties and degrades the long-term stability of the NMR co-magnetometers. This paper proposes a combination suppressing scheme, which uses the second-order magnetic field gradient coils to compensate for the Rb polarization-induced magnetic gradient under counter-propagating pump beams. Based on the theoretical simulation, we find that the spatial distribution of the Rb polarization-induced magnetic gradient and the magnetic field distribution generated by gradient coils are complementary. The experimental results indicate that the compensation effect is 10% higher under the counter-propagating pump beams scheme compared with the compensation effect under the conventional single beam. Besides, due to a more uniform spatial distribution of electronic spin polarization, the Xe nuclear spin polarizability is improved and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of NMR co-magnetometers could be further enhanced. The study provides an ingenious method for suppressing magnetic gradient in the optically polarized Rb-Xe ensemble, which is expected to improve the performance of the atomic spin co-magnetometers.

Spiral Radiator Chip for Rb and Xe Spin Polarization in Miniaturized NMR Co‐Magnetometers

Xiaoqin Meng, Zhen Chai, Xuelei Wang +6 more

ABSTRACT Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) co‐magnetometers are high‐precision atomic sensors, but their practical deployment is hindered by bulky free‐space optics. Here, we propose a circularly polarized light radiation scheme based on a silicon nitride photonic platform and develop a compact, chip‐scale integrated optical pumping module. Distinct from prior on‐chip schemes limited to electron spin polarization, our approach achieves polarization of alkali metal electron spins and noble gas nuclear spins. By integrating a spiral waveguide with angular gratings, the platform emits vertically propagating CPL with a 5.65° divergence angle, and the average degree of circular polarization exceeds 95%. Magnetic field‐dependent measurements reveal clear 129 Xe and 131 Xe precession responses. A 50% increase in SRC pumping power increases the relative nuclear spin polarization of 129 Xe by a factor of 1.72 and that of 131 Xe by a factor of 2.90, verifying efficient nuclear spin polarization. The SRC scheme yields electron and nuclear spin resonance responses in the vapor cell, while the SRC chip itself occupies a compact footprint of only 1 × 2 mm 2 . This work offers a highly integrated photonic solution for atomic polarization, facilitating the miniaturization and practical deployment of high‐performance NMR co‐magnetometers.

A novel approach for enhancement of atomic spin polarization in spin-exchange relaxation-free gyroscopes based on a homogenized light field

Longyan Ma, Xiaohan Ge, Haoying Pang +7 more

Abstract Atomic spin comagnetometers based on the spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) effect offer significant potential for inertial sensing and support the development of long-endurance, high-precision navigation technologies. However, limited nuclear spin polarization constrains the long-term stability of these systems. Here, a flat-top optical pumping configuration is introduced for SERF comagnetometers, expanding the uniform-intensity region of the beam to approximately 62 % , which enhances atomic polarization by around 19 % and improves magnetic noise suppression by 32 % . Experimental results demonstrate notable improvements in both sensitivity and long-term stability, highlighting the effectiveness of flat-top beams in overcoming atomic polarization uniformity limitations and advancing SERF co-magnetometer performance.

Improvement of spin polarization spatial uniformity in optically pumped atomic magnetometers based on counter-propagating pump beams and atomic diffusion

Junpeng Zhao, Gang Liu, Jixi Lu +9 more

Abstract In an optically pumped alkali vapor cell with a high density of atoms, the attenuation of the pump light generates a spatially non-uniform distribution of the electronic spin polarization of alkali atoms, which is detrimental to biomagnetism applications of magnetometers as well as the hyperpolarization of noble gas atoms. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new scheme to generate a nearly uniform, unsaturated spin polarization region based on counter-propagating pump beams and atomic diffusion. A finite element method-based simulation is used to demonstrate the three-dimensional distribution of the spin polarization in a spherical cell. The effects of cell temperature and pump light power on the homogeneity of the spin polarization are studied. The distribution of spin polarization near the center of the cell is experimentally measured and a 1 cm uniform spin polarization region is achieved in the center of the cell. The uniformity of spin polarization in the center region of the cell increased by 50% compared with single beam pumping. The advantage of our proposed scheme is that it can generate an unsaturated uniform region of spin polarization in the center of a cell using a single species of alkali atoms.

The Bell‐Bloom‐Type Optically‐Pumped FID Rubidium Atomic Magnetometer With a Multi‐Passing Probe Beam and Two Counter‐Propagating Pump Beams

Yongbiao Yang, Zhengyu Su, Yang Li +4 more

ABSTRACT The Bell‐Bloom‐type optically‐pumped atomic magnetometers are well‐suited for weak geomagnetic field detection. However, conventional single‐beam pumping introduces an atomic spin polarization gradient, which limits the measurement accuracy and sensitivity. To address this issue, this paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a Bell‐Bloom‐type rubidium FID magnetometer scheme integrating orthogonally polarized counter‐propagating pumping and multi‐pass probe detection. This design homogenizes the atomic spin polarization distribution and suppresses light shifts and power broadening. This uniform polarization, in turn, allows the five‐pass probe configuration to achieve a significantly larger signal amplitude. Experimental results reveal that, compared with the traditional single‐beam pumping and single‐pass detection scheme, the proposed magnetometer achieves a remarkable improvement in magnetic field measurement accuracy, and the magnetic field sensitivity is improved from 18.9 to 3.1 pT/. Notably, the two techniques work synergistically, yielding a 6.1‐fold sensitivity enhancement that far exceeds their individual gains. This work provides an effective technical approach and reference for optimizing the performance of atomic magnetometers and their applications in precision measurement fields.

Polarization‐Improved Bidirectional‐Pump Atomic Magnetometer Based on Spin‐Decoupled Metasurface

Shuo Sun, Jiahao Zhang, Rongtong Zhu +4 more

Abstract The optically pumped atomic magnetometer (OPAM) has emerged as an advanced instrument for magnetic field detection. However, the performance of conventional OPAMs is constrained by factors such as non‐uniform atomic polarization and insufficient precision in system polarization control. In this study, a bidirectional‐pump OPAM based on spin‐decoupled metasurface is presented and experimentally demonstrated. By designing a metasurface structure with a predefined phase distribution, the system generates two circularly polarized (CP) lights with distinct chirality and one linearly polarized (LP) light. Two beams of the CP light are directed in opposite directions along both sides of the cell, which effectively mitigates the polarization gradient within the cell and enhances the stability of the system. Additionally, the use of zero‐order LP light as the probe light for the system enhances energy utilization efficiency while simplifying the system architecture. The experimental results demonstrate that the OPAM based on metasurface successfully realizes precise control of atomic spin polarization. The proposed OPAM is capable of performing high‐precision magnetic field measurements, and the sensitivity has been improved to 1.85 pT/Hz 1/2 . This research not only advances the application of metasurfaces in quantum precision measurement but also offers a novel approach for enhancing the performance of atomic magnetometers.
