Abstract

We consider the spin-1/2 chain material. It was predicted earlier that the intersite spin nematic order can be realized due to the spin-elastic coupling in such a system. Here we show that intersite spin nematic ordered states can be studied using magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric experiments. Intersite spin nematic phases and phase transitions in spin chain materials can be observed in relative changes of the velocity of sound (related to the changes of the elastic modulus of the crystal), the magnetostriction, and, for noncenter-symmetric systems, the electric permittivity as functions of the temperature and the external magnetic field, since those relative changes are proportional to the spin quadrupole (spin nematic) susceptibility of the system.

Manifestation of spin nematic ordering in the spin-1 chain system

Andrei A. Zvyagin, Victor V. Slavin, G. A. Zvyagina

Spin-1 chain material is considered. Recently, it was predicted that the spin nematic ordered phase can be realized due to the spin-elastic coupling. In this study we show that the appearance of the spin nematic ordering and phase transitions to such ordered states can be studied using magneto-acoustic experiments. One can observe such phases and phase transitions considering relative changes of the velocity of sound (related to the changes of the elastic modulus of the crystal) as a function of temperature and the external magnetic field. It is shown that those relative changes are proportional to the spin quadrupole susceptibility of the system. The results are obtained using the exact Bethe ansatz solution and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for several typical values of the biquadratic spin-spin exchange interaction and for various values of the spin-elastic coupling and elastic modules.

Intersite spin nematic ordering in the spin- 12 chain system

Andrei A. Zvyagin, Victor V. Slavin

A spin-1/2 chain system coupled to the elastic subsystem of the crystal is considered. Due to that coupling, the intersite spin nematic ordering in the spin subsystem takes place. The phase transition to the ordered phase is studied using the exact quantum-mechanical approach. It is shown how the nonzero temperature and the external magnetic field affect the transition to the intersite spin nematic phase and the phase itself. Spin nematic ordering in the spin-1 chain system

Andrei A. Zvyagin, Victor V. Slavin

We predict the instability of the quantum spin-1 chain material with respect to the spin nematic ordering. For the spin subsystem the spin nematic order parameter is related to the onset of single-ion spin anisotropy. The ordering is caused by the coupling to the elastic subsystem of the crystal or, for spin-1 ultracold bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice, by the interaction with a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our conclusions are based on the exact integrability of the spin model and on numerical simulations for the nonintegrable cases. Our exact results also describe the behavior of interacting gluons within the lattice toy Yang-Mills-like model, in which spontaneous and field-induced symmetry breaking can be realized.

Electromagnetic, piezoelectric, and magnetoelastic characteristics of a quantum spin chain system

Andrei A. Zvyagin

Electric, piezoelectric, and elastic characteristics of the quantum spin-1/2 chain system are calculated. Using the exact analytical solution we show that electric permittivity, piezoelectric and elastic modules, and magnetic characteristics can manifest strong dependencies on the values of the external magnetic, electric field, external strain, and temperature.

Electric field- and strain-induced quantum phase transitions in a spin chain

Andrei A. Zvyagin

The effect of the external electric field and/or the external strain on the low-temperature behavior of the quantum spin chain model is studied. The external electric field or the strain can cause the quantum magnetic structural phase transition between two magnetically ordered phases with different order parameters. Such a quantum critical point can be observed in the special behavior of the low-temperature specific heat: At the critical value the low-temperature specific heat manifests linear in temperature behavior instead of the exponentially small one for other values of the field. The magnetic susceptibility also manifests the special behavior, in which quantum phase transitions are revealed.

Spin-Nematic and Spin-Liquid Phases in Low-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Tôru Sakai

The spin nematic phase, which is a kind of multipole phases, has attracted a lot of interest in the field of the strongly correlated electron systems, as well as the quantum spin liquid phase. Using the numerical exact diagonalization, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation, and the finite-size scaling analysis, it is found that some spin nematic and spin liquid phases appear in the anisotropic and/or frustrated quantum spin systems. In our previous work, quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin systems with the easy-axis anisotropy in magnetic field are theoretically investigated using the numerical exact diagonalization, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and the finite-size scaling analysis[1]. It was found that a field-induced nematic phase appears at some critical field in the anisotropic spin ladder and the mixed spin chain. The nematic phase is characterized by the power-law decay in the correlation function of the second-order spin moment. In addition at some higher critical field a quantum phase transition can occur to the conventional field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Several typical magnetization curves calculated by DMRG are presented. We will also propose an experiment to observe these field-induced transitions by NMR measurements. The field-induced incommensurate order observed in azurite, which is modeled by the distorted diamond chain, by the recent NMR measurement will be also discussed. Recently the field-induced nematic phase was observed on the frustrated spin ladder system[2,3]. So we study on a frustrated spin ladder system[4], using the numerical diagonalization and DMRG. As a result, it is found that several exotic quantum phases, including the spin-nematic liquid phase. We also report some exact eigen states of the present model. [1] T. Sakai, T. Tonegawa and K.
