Intersite spin nematic ordering in the spin- 12 chain system

Abstract

A spin-1/2 chain system coupled to the elastic subsystem of the crystal is considered. Due to that coupling, the intersite spin nematic ordering in the spin subsystem takes place. The phase transition to the ordered phase is studied using the exact quantum-mechanical approach. It is shown how the nonzero temperature and the external magnetic field affect the transition to the intersite spin nematic phase and the phase itself. Intersite spin nematic ordering in spin chain materials: Behavior of observables

We consider the spin-1/2 chain material. It was predicted earlier that the intersite spin nematic order can be realized due to the spin-elastic coupling in such a system. Here we show that intersite spin nematic ordered states can be studied using magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric experiments. Intersite spin nematic phases and phase transitions in spin chain materials can be observed in relative changes of the velocity of sound (related to the changes of the elastic modulus of the crystal), the magnetostriction, and, for noncenter-symmetric systems, the electric permittivity as functions of the temperature and the external magnetic field, since those relative changes are proportional to the spin quadrupole (spin nematic) susceptibility of the system.

Spin nematic ordering in the spin-1 chain system

Andrei A. Zvyagin, Victor V. Slavin

We predict the instability of the quantum spin-1 chain material with respect to the spin nematic ordering. For the spin subsystem the spin nematic order parameter is related to the onset of single-ion spin anisotropy. The ordering is caused by the coupling to the elastic subsystem of the crystal or, for spin-1 ultracold bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice, by the interaction with a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our conclusions are based on the exact integrability of the spin model and on numerical simulations for the nonintegrable cases. Our exact results also describe the behavior of interacting gluons within the lattice toy Yang-Mills-like model, in which spontaneous and field-induced symmetry breaking can be realized.

Manifestation of spin nematic ordering in the spin-1 chain system

Andrei A. Zvyagin, Victor V. Slavin, G. A. Zvyagina

Spin-1 chain material is considered. Recently, it was predicted that the spin nematic ordered phase can be realized due to the spin-elastic coupling. In this study we show that the appearance of the spin nematic ordering and phase transitions to such ordered states can be studied using magneto-acoustic experiments. One can observe such phases and phase transitions considering relative changes of the velocity of sound (related to the changes of the elastic modulus of the crystal) as a function of temperature and the external magnetic field. It is shown that those relative changes are proportional to the spin quadrupole susceptibility of the system. The results are obtained using the exact Bethe ansatz solution and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for several typical values of the biquadratic spin-spin exchange interaction and for various values of the spin-elastic coupling and elastic modules.

Dynamics of quantum spin-nematics: Comparisons with canted antiferromagnets

Tsutomu Momoi

The identification of spin-nematic states is challenging due to the absence of Bragg peaks. However, the study of dynamical physical quantities provides a promising avenue for characterizing these states. In this study, we investigate the dynamical properties of spin-nematic states in three-dimensional quantum spin systems in a magnetic field, using a two-component boson theory that incorporates magnons and bimagnons. Our particular focus lies on the dynamical spin structure factor at zero temperature and the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate at finite temperatures. Our findings reveal that the dynamical structure factor does not exhibit any diverging singularity across momentum and frequency while providing valuable information about the form factor of bimagnon states and the underlying structure of spin-nematic order. Furthermore, we find a temperature dependence in the NMR relaxation rate proportional to T3 at low temperatures, similar to canted antiferromagnets. A clear distinction arises as there is no critical divergence of the NMR relaxation rate at the spin-nematic transition temperature. Our theoretical framework provides a comprehensive understanding of the excitation spectrum and the dynamical properties of spin-nematic states, covering arbitrary spin values S and encompassing site and bond nematic orders. Additionally, we apply the same methodology to analyze these dynamical quantities in a canted antiferromagnetic state and compare the results with those in the spin-nematic states. Quantum phase transition between spin liquid and spin nematics in spin-1 Kitaev honeycomb model

Tohru Mashiko, Tsuyoshi Okubo

Besides the exactly solvable spin-1/2 Kitaev model, higher spin- S ones, not exactly solvable, are promising playgrounds for researches on the quantum spin liquid as well. One of the main interests in higher spin- S cases is the interplay between the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) and spin nematics. We probe this interplay in a spin-1 model on the honeycomb lattice with competing bilinear-biquadratic and Kitaev interactions. Utilizing the 2D infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS), we map out the phase diagram for the ferro-biquadratic interaction. In the phase diagram, we discover the direct phase transitions between the KSL phases and ferro-quadrupolar ordered spin nematic phase, which we call the FQ phase. It has been revealed that the ferro KSL exhibits robustness against perturbations from ferro-quadrupolar interactions. Also, the FQ phase is extended to the parameter region near the antiferro-Kitaev limit. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Spin nematics next to spin singlets

Yuto Yokoyama, Chisa Hotta

We provide a route to generate nematic order in a spin-1/2 system. Unlike the well-known magnon-binding mechanism, our spin nematics requires neither the frustration effect nor spin polarization in a high field or in the vicinity of a ferromagnet, but instead appears next to the spin singlet phase. We start from a state consisting of a quantum spin-1/2 singlet dimer placed on each site of a triangular lattice, and show that interdimer ring exchange interactions efficiently dope the SU(2) triplets that itinerate and interact, easily driving a stable singlet state to either Bose-Einstein condensates or a triplet crystal, some hosting a spin nematic order. A variety of roles the ring exchange serves includes the generation of a bilinear-biquadratic interaction between nearby triplets, which is responsible for the emergent nematic order separated from the singlet phase by a first-order transition.
