Quantum computing in risk management and supply chain resilience

Jayanta Biswas, Maad Mohsin Mijwil, Laith Farhan +1 more

This chapter explores the transformative potential of quantum computing in enhancing risk management and supply chain resilience. As global supply chains grow increasingly complex and vulnerable to disruptions, traditional computational methods struggle to manage the associated risks effectively. Quantum computing, leveraging principles such as superposition and entanglement, offers unprecedented computational power to tackle these challenges. The chapter delves into the fundamentals of quantum computing, highlighting key concepts and algorithms like Grover's and Shor's algorithms, and their applications in optimizing supply chain operations. Several case studies illustrate practical implementations, including Volkswagen's use of quantum algorithms to optimize traffic flow, IBM and Maersk's block-chain-based Trade Lens platform for real-time shipment tracking, and Honeywell's exploration of quantum computing for advanced manufacturing. Despite its promise, the field faces challenges, including technological scalability, integration with existing systems, and high costs. However, ongoing advancements and research suggest a promising future for quantum computing in building more efficient, resilient, and secure supply chains. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the current state and potential future directions of quantum computing in supply chain management. The Quantum Advantage in Future Technologies for Supply Chain Optimization

L. B. Muralidhar, R. Shilpa, Vipan Kumar +2 more

Globalization, fluctuating demand, and the need for real-time responses have stretched global supply chains to their limits, which the traditional systems cannot handle. Quantum computing, through superposition, entanglement, and parallelism, offers transformational solutions to route optimization, inventory balancing, demand forecasting, and risk mitigation. Advanced quantum algorithms unlock unprecedented processing of vast datasets, predictive precision, and unparalleled efficiency in decision-making. However, high costs, limited access, and integration issues hamper this adoption. This chapter, therefore, focuses on how these challenges can be overcome through collaboration among technology providers, logistics experts, and academia. It follows with a proposed roadmap for integrating quantum computing into supply chain systems, followed by practical use cases and future research directions.
